Oh my, where have your been for all of the years I have been coming here. This place is amazing, small, away from the tourist part of town and they only accept cash. You would be wise to can ahead and make a reservation. We got there shortly after 5 and it was completely (9-10 tables?) full before we finished. The fixed menu (see photo) is an incredible value and let's you sample four of their dishes. You have two choices for the main, I went with the mole poblano(over chicken) my friend had the mole oxaca which was very different. Mine was a little spicy, more of a traditional take on mole. Hers was almost sweet, with a number of flavors melding together exceedingly well. I've never had peanut soup before and it's amazing I've lived this long. Creamy, savory.. This is followed by one of their specialties that I have a hard time finding, Chiles En Nogada. Reported to have been created by the nuns at the Santa Monica convent, this is a complex and wonder concoction of sweet and savory ingredients served cold with a cream sauce that has pomegranate in the cream sauce that is covering the poblano chili. It's a very mild, very wonderful dish. I went with the Polo mole poblano for my main. It was a little bit spicy but not very much. A fairly traditional mole sauce served over chicken with rice and beans and for my last course I had the flan which was very well done. In my opinion, this fixed price meal comes with a shot of tequila which I substituted for lemonade and a glass of red or white wine I had the white wine to go with my chicken and it was all perfectly orchestrated. It came out quickly. It didn't feel like it was too much food and I appreciated every bite. This is one of those places you hate to leave a glowing review about because it may be harder to get into the next time you're in town. But this is oh so good. It's worth it. Fortunately it's far enough off the beaten trail that most people will be too timid to go out and try it, but it's to your loss if you don't go and try this.

I absolutely love this hidden gem in PV. It's a quick Uber ride from the Malacon or Romantic zone. Tucked into a neighborhood you will find the most amazing mole I've ever had. They have several different moles from the regions of Mexico. I believe it's cash only but reasonably priced and the owners are very welcoming. Off the beaten path but worth seeking it out!

A truly authentic and cozy local Mexican restaurant. As much an experience as it is a meal. I was really impressed with the peanut soup - so savory. Reservations strongly recommended.

This well established restaurant featured in Bon appétit Magazine is well worth the walk, taxi or Uber. Extremely friendly welcoming staff offers excellent service. The food is high quality authentic Mexican cuisine. A must on my next visit.

Amazing comfort food.

Love everything about this place. The walk there down the river, the kind and attentive staff, the FOOD! Tortilla Soup, Poblano Mole, and that other dish that is their staple I'm forgetting. All was perfect.

Such a wonderful, quaint, bohemian style restaurant off the beaten path. They serve the BEST mole in my opinion. Treat yourself to a unique meal by ordering the Frida Khalo dinner. You'll be treated to unique flavors of Mexico you will not find on most menus anywhere. We have been going here for years and it's a "must" every year we visit PV.

We arrived in Puerto Vallarta about a week ago, and have enjoyed shopping at delightful neighborhood markets in the Zona Romantica area. Our meals have been on the go, without much fanfare all week, so we wanted to have a special dinner as our vacation was coming to an end. Our AirBnB location showed this café as the nearest spot for dinner, so I clicked through and had a read of the menu. It seemed perfect! AND BOY WAS IT EVER. The staff were attentive and wonderful. The host chided me playfully about my lack of Spanish, but was very helpful with our selections off the menu. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees, but the surplus of food was way more than we had anticipated! I had poblanos stuffed with pork, while my partner enjoyed the lengthy list of vegetarian options available, settling on a stuffed pepper with cheese and a nice light sauce. The corn fungus quesadilla is a *must try* that I cannot recommend enough. There was a well-rounded selection of drinks and desserts as well, to accompany the meal. We enjoyed a glass of red and a glass of white wines. Getting to the cafe means going out of your normal way, but please, please don't let this dissuade you from trying it. It's not yet another tourist trap in PV, it's an experience in dining you shouldn't miss out on.

Mole Piblano

Lovely little hidden gem not too far from the heart of Zona Romantica. I was very well taken care of by Cuco and staff. Dining alone in Mexico can be a little weird sometimes, but I felt very welcomed and well taken care of. Unassuming from the outside, lovely art and colorful inside. I'm always looking for good mole, and this wonderful little restaurant serves the very best mole I've ever had. Thank you for the lovely meal and attentive and friendly service, I will definitely be back the next time I'm here!

You have to pluck a third of the meat with your fingers just to get the tortilla to structurally hold. There is always a line. On a random Tuesday it stretched down the street long before the door opened. I waited twenty five minutes at four in the afternoon for a seat inside. No to go orders, no doggy bags. You eat what you order and leave behind your self respect. The dining room is packed tighter than a turtle's pecker. A dozen staff members move around each other like bees tending the hive, the rhythm wild and relentless. The tacos themselves are intimidatingly large, the vibe unlike anything I have ever seen. Come for the al pastor, and come hungry. If you cannot finish, no option exists but to weep over the abandoned morsels.

Ordering was a bit confusing since they give you paper forms to fill out. It's tricky to order for different people in your party, and they tend to rush you, which can be stressful. It's thicker, more cheesy than what I've ever had before and very delicious. We paired that with the prime rib tacos, it was a plate stacked with meat and 4 tortillas under it, more than we could eat. The seasoning was great, it was diced so small that it was easy to eat. Vegans are easy please. Give them clear marked options, even if there is one option, we are pleased. This place had a few clearly marked options plus the staff was fully aware and can provide suggestions. The only downside it is a cash only place. Guacamole and chips - fantastic. The guacamole freshly prepared and chips fresh fried. Amazing. The 3 types of vegan tacos we got were vegan chorizo, mushrooms and cactus (trying for the fist time). The vegan chorizo was the best, slightly spicy but not overly. The poblano peppers were predictable but very good. The onions with it were a good addition. Nicely seasoned and prepared. The cactus was good, we found that it was less seasoned. Just stir fried cactus. The star of all the three types tacos was the fresh blue corn tacos. We could have those everyday. The other superb tasting was the salsas and fresh toppings. 4 types of salsas, white onions and cilantro. The salsa were of varying different levels of heat and even the mildest salsa was the best. The virgin margarita and virgin mojito were great. Margarita being slightly better even though we love mint. Good atmosphere, clean surrounding and great service and vegan food - what more can one ask?

The entire front portion of the restaurant sits directly in the sand, so that's where we chose to have breakfast--under the iconic palapa roof, feet in the sand, overlooking the ocean. From our table you can watch the fishing boats and excursion boats heading out for the day, which gives the whole experience a relaxed, resort-like rhythm without feeling touristy or rushed. Service was excellent from the start--attentive, warm, and genuinely welcoming. They brought out a selection of pastries you can add if you want, like banana bread and cinnamon rolls, which felt like a thoughtful touch rather than an upsell. The coffee was very good, with plenty of options ranging from cappuccinos and café lattes to classic American coffee, all well prepared. For food, I ordered the scrambled eggs with Mexican chorizo, refried beans, and hash browns. It came with a basket of warm corn tortillas and several house salsas, letting you customize each bite. Everything was flavorful, comforting, and clearly made with care. We also ordered the shrimp eggs Benedict with spinach, which was beautifully done--rich, balanced, and fresh, with the shrimp cooked just right. One thing that really stands out is the ambiance. Being right on the beach, hearing the waves, feeling the breeze, and being encouraged (without being told) to slow down and take your time makes the meal feel like part of the vacation itself, not just fuel for the day. They also offer freshly squeezed juices, which pair perfectly with breakfast by the ocean. The menu is extensive, almost overwhelming in a good way--there are so many appealing options that it's genuinely hard to decide. That said, what we ordered was absolutely delicious and satisfying, and it left us wanting to come back and try more. Overall, La Palapa delivers on every level: location, atmosphere, food, and service. It's the kind of place where breakfast turns into a memory, not just a meal.
