I had the pleasure of taking a water color class with Phylis. My sister, my niece, and I enjoyed it so much! Very cute studio and her music playlist was a nice touch. I really enjoyed this slower pace type of class as supposed a wine n paint one that feels like it moves too fast for me. Phylis does not stand behind her work whatsoever. She became offended after we sent the paintings she did poorly back. She ripped my mom off for a few paintings because she couldn't seem to get them right and refuses to refund the money. I would not do business with her or this art studio. read more

Be expected to spend a lot on your supplies -- if I'd gotten all the items she lists, I would have spend well over $100 at Michael's (and that was finding things on sale). This is fine if you know you're going to like painting and stick with it, but if you're not sure, it's a huge upfront investment. As it turned out, I'm glad I didn't spend the money since I was unable to come to the class due to a major issue two days beforehand and wanted to take a different class (wasn't asking for a refund) -- but they don't allow changes or cancellations less that 72 hours ahead of time "due to Covid restrictions" -- though I went online to see if I could get a ticket for the same event on the same day, and there was space left in the class. So, I basically gave Phyllis $49, which she can now spend as she pleases. I have to say, people using Covid as an excuse to find ways to keep other people's money is morally questionable, at the very least -- not to mention a bad business model. Due to her attitude, I canceled a second class for a different week and requested a refund. So they lost a customer for good, rather than just allowing me to take a different class on a different day. Never again. read more

We took the Paint and Sip class at Poseidon Brewery and it was truly a wonderful class. I don't have a single creative bone in my body but Jennifer somehow turned me into an artist (with a lot of guidance!) during our session. She gave us one on one attention and our paintings of the ocean sunset with our fur-babies turned out pretty neat! read more

I walked in for one of Jen's class today. I literally walked-in as some friends had invited me to participate very last minute. The site didn't say walk-ins NOT WELCOME!! At least, I couldn't see it. As I walked in a little late and introduced myself, she looked at my friend and said:" you should've called. You can't just walk in like that." I offered to go home but she gestured for me to sit down. Since there was no smile and the customer service was simply rude, I set down for a minute and then decided to walk out. She didn't even make an effort for me to stay. Rude!! She was simply rude. Mind you her place was not full. There only 4 people. Plenty of stations available. I'll go back for other events as I like the place but will not attend an event with Jen. The woman is simply rude. First impressions do count! read more

I love Red Brick Art Gallery! Jen and Phyllis have always been so patient, kind and welcoming. I have taken water color classes, acrylic classes and pastel classes. I love how, unlike some other paint and sip studios, everyone's artwork is unique and special. Jen is a master at "fixing" mistakes. I also bought my best friend private photography classes with Jen and she spent time not only showing her how to take amazing photos...but also how to use all the features on her new camera. I have had to move a class in the past, and had no problem with customer service (I do believe it was a week before the anticipated class). I took an all-day glass mosaic class at Red Brick and it was great! Jen was an excellent teacher and had good ideas for colors and composition. I had always wanted to work with glass and was surprised at how easy she made it to learn the techniques. My finished piece looks really nice and now I have the skills to make my own at home. Phyllis also provided advice and ideas. I hope to do a group class with some friends to make Christmas ornaments next time. read more

Redbrick art is a really cool gallery. You can do art lessons there as well as purchasing different paintings. When we went we got a set of three coasters that had pretty paintings of Ventura on them. Overall, a great gift shop that you can get presents at. read more

My friend Staci B. invited me to paint on a Friday night. Being no Van Gogh, I apprehensively joined her. Well, with Jen's patient and fun instruction and a few sips from the glass, a masterpiece, at least for me, was created. My friends actually think I have artistic talent! Jen is a lot of fun and it doesn't hurt that she is a dog lover. The class was small, but large enough to make some new friends. It felt more intimate than like the cattle call at The Collection, which still can be fun, but I prefer the Red Brick environment. I will be back and I have recommended the classes to others. I love Red Brick Art! My daughter and I took our first painting class together and it was so fun! Jen and Phyllis are so nice and welcoming. Their artwork is all over the studio and they are both fabulous artists. Jen taught our class of six how to paint using acrylics. She is such a great teacher. She is very patient and she was very good at giving us instruction on techniques. All of the supplies were included for a small additional fee and it was worth it. I would not have known what to purchase. I'm so glad that option is available. I am already looking forward to trying a watercolor class under Phyllis' guidance and then probably a mosaic class. The best art school ever. Bar none. I absolutely can't say enough about how wonderful these ladies are! I was the WORST, and I mean, WORST, student and they have worked with me over the last 3 and a half years and I can honestly say that I am really hooked on creating art. I have even sold some! Who would have thought? Not me. For sure. If you are looking for something fun, different, challenging and rewarding, take a class! I have never been treated so rudely by a business representative in my life! I called to cancel a reservation I had made to take an art class two days in advance of the scheduled class. I was told that the policy required three days notice. I said that I totally understood and merely explained that I had forgotten about a prior commitment I had made. In a very rude tone, the woman said "I wonder why you would make a reservation with us when you knew you had somewhere else to go?" I asked the woman if she has ever forgotten anything in her life and made it clear that 1. I was not asking for my money back and 2. I did not like the way she was speaking to me. She promptly went on to lecture me about the commitment they make to their teachers and to the other students in the class. When I reminded her that as a business owner, I would never speak to a customer like she was speaking to me and assured her that I would never step foot in her establishment, she continued with: "I bet you are the kind of person who is used to getting everything you want." Seriously? I promptly hung up the phone. I was really looking forward to taking art lessons here and was highly disappointed about what had occurred. in fact, I was stunned. Their unprofessional demeanor must be the result of leaving their business on Main Street along with a change in business name as well. I used to love and browse the gallery when they were up on Main St. Their artists capture the essence of Ventura. But as far as a gallery and the art classes, they are not friendly to work with. I have gotten to know Marco Aguilar who is a great instructor. I took my first classes with him. As far as instructionals go, they tend to do the same thing all year round without much new input from new artists. They focus mainly on dogs, two trees, and seascapes. Come on, how many of us want to repeat that over and over again. The classes are attended by relatively the same repeat crowd...older single women who drink wine...cheap wine. Men tend to be looked down upon, but that is just my opinion and feeling when dealing with the gallery. I am guessing that the owners are bitter divorcees. I have found better creative options working with other artists in the community. Just my own personal opinion, your mileage may vary. read more
