Oct '26: + Started on time (Mon morn)…read more + Plenty restrooms with paper towels. + Water station. + We worked in the warehouse. So, all shade. No worry about sun. Tips: . wear durable gloves. My fingernails kept bending the wrong way with these rugged cardboard boxes. . Bring (cold) H2O. . Eat before arrival. Gonna need your strength. Nov '24: + Nice place to practice goodwill and volunteer for charity. Friendly, supportive people. This place serves a good cause. - One thing I don't like is how late they start. The food packaging event was supposed to start 10:30am (Saturday). They didn't start til 11:30. Why not just tell us to come at 11:30? Wasted a bunch of us an hour. Ended on time though, at 1am. Towards the end of each assembly line we use a scale to weigh the taped box to verify it's heavy enough. A better protocol would be, before taping the box up, to have one person look through the box to verify everything's there. imo a weight reading isn't reliable, since it can read 0.4 lb more or less, and you don't know if it's just due to tolerance or if something's actually missing.

I've volunteered at various food banks and this is definitely one of the more challenging ones. Packing/sorting the peaches is a messy job and either that or the onions got some type of allergen on our forearms, making us super itchy. On the box packing assembly line I was given two stations so I worked like a dog as fast/hard as I could so I wouldn't let the rest of the line down even though I probably should've taken a break. It was like an hour long cardio workout and I was drenched in sweat by the end of it, but we got A LOT of boxes packed.

I think everybody should volunteer as much as they can. Second Harvest is a great place to…read morevolunteer! It truly makes such a difference when we come together as a community to help those in need. They make everything so easy and everyone here is always so welcoming! Stephanie and Jason are the two that are usually in the front helping you check in, so I have been able to talk to them the most. They both have such kind hearts and always make sure your experience here is great. Everything works smoothly here and the staff explain what to do perfectly. You start by watching a video that talks more about what Second Harvest is and what to expect during your volunteer shift. My personal favorite is grocery rescue, which is where you go to the cooler in the back and sort the good and the bad items that they receive from grocery stores. There are plenty of other options, depending on the day, like order pulling, crate washing, processing, bag cutting, etc. These are just some of the opportunities that they offer at the distribution center. They also have their own farm where you can spend your time picking the produce straight from the ground! Overall, this is such a great place to volunteer at. In the warehouse, they also show where all their products get distributed to. Below is a list of all the food banks in the area, if you ever need it!

FYI You can also donate directly to the other website if you wish to contribute and can't volunteer your time. We need more places like this when so many people are dealing with food insecurity.
