I had been exploring private and charter schools for our daughter, 7, and son age 10. We were looking at schools in the Berkeley area after considering exposing our children to something new challenging and rewarding, and one that offered more in the line of alternative teaching and programs. We wanted a more casual and novel approach to the rigid classrom atmosphere that we thought was so ubiquitous, and that both my husband and I had been a product of growing up. Our children are both in Jewish education programs, as both my husband and I attended when we were children. We looked and considered Realm Charter. However, after meeting with some teachers at the school and reviewing the curriculum and mission statement of the school, it didn't take long to quickly blow this institution off as startling, to say the least. I feel that my child would be exposed to too much political dogma (realm revolution) which borders on making me feel too squeamish and uncomfortable. I feel that my children will make their own decisions on what kind of politics and beliefs they'll hold rather than be taught these things at such a young age. My children will fly their own flags, instead of the kind that this school waves. It's too bad that an institution such as this one, which unfortunately to me, provided a picture of third world inner-city blight, would attempt to contrast itself so starkly with the other surrounding schools which have good reputations - (black pine circle, and rosa parks). I'm still a little dumbfounded as to how or why this institution would operate in such a visibly stark and institutional way - despite being heavily subsidized by some large and well-known private industries. People, if you love your children enough to give them a leg-up in the world, keep them in your current public school, or seek out another institution with a widely and highly regarded reputation of long standing. I have heard nothing but questionable, amazed, not glowing, and downright bluntly not so great (awful) things about this school ranging from the teaching staff, to the curriculum, to the leadership, to the funding, to the questionable safety, cheap and quick building and retrofitting, ventilation, heating, and lack of facilities (children walk a quarter mile to and from two separate campuses through back streets - may i say dangerous, sketchy, and why would i want my children doing this?) Oy vey, the list is long and fraught with loose ends to go into more detail about why you should not consider this school. Responsible, upstanding parents - do not consider what seems to me and many other parents to be a fly by night organization. read more
