This store is the Walmart of Germany! You'll find everything for the household under one roof and it's ginormous. We came here to shop for shabu shabu ingredients which my cousin was preparing for us and we found everything we needed. The meat, cheese, seafood selection was large but I was in awe by the beer selection - literally row after row and what was nice is you're allowed to purchased a bottle vs the entire 6 or twelve pack. We ended up purchasing a large variety. I had no idea there are 5000 brands of beers in Germany. The store also sells hot pork sammies in the deli on for $1.80 Euro and are the bomb. This location is referred to as the "Big Real" since it's the largest one in the area. It doesn't have everything like Wal Mart but it comes pretty close. Their beer selection is ah-mazing. The drink section is not connected but rather in the attached building to the right. That is also where you would return your bottles, crates, and plastic recyclables. Heres a crucial tip, grab your cart outside. That don't have a corral inside (except for the tiny ones for the kiddos and car seat carts). We go for the veggie and fruit selection. They always have a special going on. When in season, they have white asparagus and the machine that shreds it. Apples are in season right now so there are numerous varieties and cider galore. We also go for the whole bean coffee. Ground coffee is the only option where we normally shop for groceries so we always grab a couple bags when we come here. When we make care packages to send home, we buy candy, treats, and repackaged foods and Real makes that easy and cheap. Why send a t-shirt that says Germany when you can send a taste?!? My FIL loves the paprika chips and Rittersport bars. They got a kick out of the "American Style" chocolate chip cookies. What they lacked in flavor they made up for in giggles. Avoid going on Saturdays, which is typical with any shopping in Germany. I like going during lunchtime. Even though it's a bit busy, sometimes vendors will be out giving samples or doing a special. Today a vendor was handing out large slices of flammkuchen and another had a deal for a choice of wurst, with either brochen or pretzel, and either pilsner or bottled soda...all for 2€! Here's another tip...if you have a bunch of change you need to get rid of, go through the self checkout lane. It takes ones and twos. It also gives you free plastic bags for your stuff. read more

Where the size of the store was impressive, the things we were looking for were not in stock. They had a display set out for examination, but not buy able units: Microwaves, sewing machine, TV sound bars. Most of these were not on sale, per say, so it's not like they had a run and were sudden sold out. We returned a week later and several of these things were still unavailable. (Um... Why have a display...? The front desk didn't understand what we were asking when we asked if any items might be in the back or not yet taken from stock.) The layout of the store was not intuitive. I do not see a correlation between beverages and pet food, but that seems to be the layout. We actually missed that section completely on the first visit because there were closed doors which we thought were employee doors. Nope. It was an opening to a section on the side which had pet supplies and drinks. ALL sorts of beverages. Teas. Cola. That juice stuff that seems popular. It seemed there were also types of wines and been there. We didn't explore it. They do take the VAT form. They know it as 'Tax free' faster, it seemed. Again, pay for it at the cashier and then take it over to the service desk to refund the difference. They did seem to have a selection of chocolates, lots of odds and ends. The reason this mark is as low as it was is because this bathroom has to be the MOST DISGUSTING I have ever seen in this country. It was not only stinky, but had stuff all over the floor. Several stalls had no toilet paper. The hand sink had no soap. I have literally pissed beside my car, on a dirt road, ended up peeing down my leg in the process, and had to use a paper towel to wipe myself off and felt LESS covered in URINE than when I did, after I pulled the ole hover-pee so my skin doesn't touch any surface because of my certainty of contamination. I was so HAPPY I had a hand sanitizer to use after going there. It make me mentally note that purchasing something made from that place was OUT of the question because either the people working there had to use that disgusting bathroom or they were OKAY with that disgusting bathroom. Either way, I don't want to put ANYTHING in my mouth that they have handled. GAG! Granted, we did visit on Saturdays, but for it to be gross BOTH times... Well, that sets the bar.
