Some are thrift-like, some are vintage, some are new. As seems often the case, nearly everything was geared towards women though. My colleague purchase a cute pair of earrings for $16. The elderly gentleman that was running the store was super friendly. Parking is a challenge - there's a double row of metered spots splitting the U-shaped strip mall but every spot was taken (we had walked from our conference/hotel). Turnover seemed decent but there are always several cars circling. FYI we saw a meter maid giving tickets too.

I actually found myself wandering in after noticing their huge selection of vintage Dooney & Burke bags from the 1980s, including the same exact style that I had strapped to my body that day. The shopkeepers had eyes like hawks, coming over and asking me all about my bag, which was a gift from my sister and is in super amazing condition. And then this older gent that was shopping chimed in and was like, "What's the deal with these bags? My daughter asked for one for Christmas and I have no idea what I'm doing. Tell me everything." So we did. I browsed a little bit. The merchandise is generally high quality vintage (plenty of recognizable brand names) so the prices vary from medium to high. Most of my time there was spent chatting with what I assume is the owner about all sorts of things though: Dooney & Burkes, other awesome vintage bags, Minneapolis, the 70+ degree weather.

I'm surprised that I am the first to review/place this business on Yelp. They opened two years ago…read moreand there was even a nice article about them in the Carolina News & Reporter from March 2023. They specialize in vintage clothing (evidently it has to be at least 20 years old). They hunt largely from donation/goodwill/etc centers and resell (they do not buy/consign). There selection is decent for both men and women. I found several ties (ranging from $10-15)... a bit steep for old ties. I offered to buy several if they would give me a quantity discount (one tie actually had an inch-long rip on the skinny/back half that would need mending eventually). They promptly declined. I've never had that happen! I then chose the one tie I liked the most and only purchased it. FYI, I take these to my tailor back home who "modernizes" them. For another $12 my tailor will hem them so they are 2-3/4 inches wide instead of 4+ inches. I get raves at the office all the time because the designs I search for are mid-century modern but the width is totally up to date. For a total of $25-30 I have a truly one of a kind. They are located about a block from the Five Points strip mall (which is probably the only place to park). On this Thursday afternoon we were the only ones browsing this airy, nicely lit, and organized business.

From the employees to the business practices Plato's has always been iffy. This is the third time…read moreI've come to drop off clothes at this location and yet despite the fact that it's currently 12:03 in the afternoon, they aren't taking clothes? I used to enjoy coming in Plato's and shopping. However, it has become apparent to me that not only will they absolutely lowball you, but the way in which they decide on what clothing is "okay" or "acceptable" is very odd. They won't take a practically brand new pair of Khy by Kylie Jenner jeans ($118 brand new) but will take SHEIN items that cost $5 and charge $12 for it? If you all invested in quality brands and reputable companies then maybe you'd have more luck with customers. Especially when you consider that most people that shop at places like this can't afford many of these items off the rack. Instead of selling good quality items, Plato's is turning into more and more of a fast fashion business where quality nor quantity are regarded. This will be my last time visiting this location and while the Harbison and Two Notch locations aren't great, they are certainly better than this specific location. I would not recommend ever trying to drop off clothes here as this time the window closed before lunch, and the last two times I came they closed before 2:00. Also find it strange that they would stop taking clothes but then be inside on their phones at the counter. Clearly, this is a place for the more unserious so I'd recommend if you'd like quality clothing, stick to a local thrift shop. If you'd like to sell, Depop is a much better option if the cash is what you're interested in.
