We have flown Ravn for years. We just flew again and they charged us for our small regulation sized carry-ons! That has never happened before. They always just put them on the plane. They allowed everyone else to bring their back packs that were way bigger that our carry-ons. We paid $130 just for our bags!!!! This is the absolute worst airline ever. Ravn constantly cancels their flights with no apologies or explanation. To get on the standby list the next day they say it's first come first serve so you better be there first. BUT even getting there and being the first one to sign in will still maybe only get you number 11 on the list. They will NOT show you the list or even explain why if you're first your actually number 11. There is NO transparency whatsoever. They turn the list over and hide it from everyone. They are very rude if you ask where you are at on the list too. If you get stuck in Dutch harbor, because they cancel your flight, don't expect to get out for weeks. Plan on possibly sleeping on the ground because they don't always have a (disgusting with blood stains on the floor and mattress) hotel room for you to buy. They run out of food there as well. The restaurant's are open only airport hours but get this they aren't at the airport. So if your stuck at the airport for days on standby you're not eating because they are closed when you get up early in the morning to go to the airport to hopefully be first ) not even if your the first in line though) and closed by the time you find out in the evening that you did not make the last flight of the day. The last flight is 6:55pm BUT the arriving plane is always late and never turned around to head out of there until after 8pm IF it's not cancelled. There is nothing and nowhere to buy any drinks or snacks at the airport but you are expected to stay there and wait all day incase you get to fly out. I watched one guy (visibly upset because they cancelled his flight twice and has been on this ridiculous standby list for days) voice his opinion and the police drug him to a corner that conveniently has no cameras and had a "discussion" with him for over 45 minutes. They hold you hostage at Ravn. I understand weather cancellations but at least have some transparency, empathy, and a better way to do a standby list. Those that have had their flights cancelled over and over SHOULD be top priority on that list not locals or friends of the ticket agents trying to take a trip that day. They should have better communication. They are not at all accommodating. It's insane! Do not use Ravn!! read more

6-18-29 Customer service sucks! I showed up at the ticket counter 40 minutes before my flight, there was a group of people in line and the agents taking their sweet time checking them in. I was told I could not board my flight even though the flight had about 15 to 20 minutes before take off because they already made the last call. I had no bags to check in and was in line with plenty of time and all they said is sorry you gotta get on the next flight. I would give it zero stars but is not possible. I recently flew with Ravn Alaska during my first visit to Alaska and I had a great experience. I fly very often for work and have had many poor experiences with airlines, so I was pleasantly surprised when I could honestly say I enjoyed both of my flights with Ravn and would 100 percent recommend them and fly with them again. When you have so many poor experiences when flying (delays, cancellations, unhelpful employees) you begin to go into any situation where you need to fly with the assumption that it will be a pain. Ravn proved me wrong. The staff at check-in and the flight attendant were incredibly helpful and kind. Boarding and take-off were on time, and I enjoyed a nice local beer during my short, smooth and very beautiful flight. Even the other customers on the plane, and the flight attendant herself, went way out of their way to tell me about all of the things I should do while visiting Alaska all the way from New York. Can't wait to visit The Last Frontier again, and when I do, I'll be exploring the state even more with Ravn. read more

The only star I am giving Ravn is for the cookies they give on flights. I've flown Ravn a few times because their flights to Anchorage and Fairbanks are occasionally cheaper than Alaska Airlines, but I have recently learned that their service is really, really poor. Ravn has the most rude customer service representatives of any airline I have ever traveled with. My husband is in the military -- we bought tickets to fly home for leave (one of two times we get to see family in the year), but the leave dates were changed outside of my husband's control. We went to the airline desk in Fairbanks at the airport and explained this situation to the customer service person. Unfortunately, no grace is given to military members and their families when dates change -- we paid $150 to change the tickets because they would do nothing for us. Okay, fine. That's reasonable. But things got worse.. A week later, 5 days before we have to leave, our flight to Anchorage that we have now paid $315 for (would have been considerably less with Alaska Airlines) gets CANCELLED. Nope, Ravn, we don't have any important places to be. You're right, Ravn, the likelihood that our family actually wants to see us twice a year is slim... funny. It gets worse though. I called Ravn when our flight was cancelled to ask for a full refund. I explained all that had happened regarding this single flight, and asked for a manager. After waiting on hold for 10 minutes, I did get to speak to a manager. However, after "kindly" offering me the refund, she told me I was "lucky I got to speak with her," as if they rarely do this for customers, and as if I did not deserve a refund on my cancelled flight. Guess the service managers at Ravn are air royalty or something! My, my! How lucky am I that I got to speak to a crotchety customer service manager and actually get a refund from an unfair airline that cancels flights that aren't filled and screws over its customers! I am thankful that we got a refund, but I do not wish to be treated this way. No, I'm not "lucky." Airlines ought to always give refunds for cancelled flights. We will no longer be flying Ravn. Alaska Airlines is 1000x better. read more

I've flown with Ravn a hundred times (I'm not exaggerating) and I have a pretty good grasp on their business. Let's discuss each aspect of their business and then their rating. Dash 7 Flights (Flights To Major Alaskan Hubs): These are by far always the most enjoyable flights with Ravn. They have very well-maintained Dash 7 planes with really comfy seats. The planes always have very professional stewardesses and pilots. There's a good selection of drinks including beer and wine choices as well as kid-friendly options like juice. You'll get a complimentary cookie on these flights that are made here in Alaska. By far my favorite part of these flights. I LOVE Ravn's cookies! Yum! Caravan Flights (Flights To Minor Alaskan Hubs): These smaller planes are not nearly as well-maintained as the larger Dash 7, but you won't find yourself riding on one of these unless you're traveling between two smaller hubs in Alaska (like Bethel and St. Mary's for example). The seats are pretty worn and there's usually writing on the walls, but the pilots are always very professional. I've been late for caravan flights a couple times, and they've always waited on the airstrip for me to get there (that's good customer service!). You won't get the same treatment with the Dash 7 flights- they're on tighter schedules. Cessna Flights (Flights To Alaskan Villages): Cessna's are very small planes. They can seat 8 passengers (I believe?) and a pilot and co-pilot. Typically I'm the only person on the flight to my village and they just put me in the co-pilot seat. I love these flights. I always get interesting pilots that are very courteous. They do their best to make sure I'm comfortable and get me where I need to go as efficiently as possible. The planes are a bit worn down, but I've never felt unsafe on one of these flights. For as old as they are, Ravn's Cessna's are very well maintained. Charters (Private Paid-For Flights): Ugh- these are the worst. I cannot stand chartering a flight through Ravn. You're paying A LOT of money when you charter a plane (typically thousands of dollars), so needless to say you want your flight to be on time. Ravn has a habit of over-booking themselves and in doing so losing reservation space. On more than one occasion my charters have been delayed by not just minutes- but hours, causing a lot of headache with my travel. Cargo (Packages Sent Through Air): I've never had an issue with Ravn's cargo department for typical packages and even heavier shipments like snow machines. They're very professional and keep good documentation of everything that flies through them. They also do a great job delivering the items and getting ahold of customers to know when their shipment has arrived at the right hub. Live Cargo (Animals Sent Through Air): I do not trust Ravn with any of my live cargo shipments- period. I'm a wreck every time I have to ship my pets through them. They've misplaced my animals and had them fly on the wrong flights. They've put the crates in poor positions (once causing my cat crate to fall over in the luggage area, break open, and lose my cat in the cargo hold- a claim was filed at the Anchorage airport with their cargo department, but nothing ever came of it. I never even received an apology statement). With that being said, Ravn has also flown DOZENS of rescue dogs out of rural Alaska villages, for free, on my behalf- working with Bethel Friends of Canines and Alaskan Animal Rescue Friends. Their commitment to animal welfare is not lacking and they DO care, but their live-cargo policies definitely need to be evaluated, as they are very careless in the way they handle pet shipments. I could spend hours typing up a really thorough review of Ravn, but Yelp has a limit- and I've reached it. A few people I want to mention before I end my review: Pilot: Mike from St. Mary's/ Bethel (he has treated my animals VERY well and always ensures they're carried carefully on his flights!) Pilot: Fred from St. Mary's/ Mountain Village (this is one pilot that I always ask for when chartering as he is consistently on time and knows western Alaska like the back of his hand. I feel very safe flying with him). Front Desk: Anna from Anchorage (After hearing about the issue with my cats, she plastered a hundred stickers on the crates to ensure they were noticed, then hand-carried them to the cargo area and ensured they were properly placed on the plane. That's amazing customer service!) Overall- four stars to Ravn. They have good and bad aspects. They're extremely overpriced and not the best with live cargo or charters. But they're reliable for scheduled flights and awesome with cargo shipments. They have some amazing pilots and I always feel safe traveling with them. Plus- they're local to Alaska, and as a sourdough at heart I gotta support that. read more

On the return journey Ravn not only cancelled my flight where other companies where operating but offered an alternative flight only in three days time. When I refused they refuse to reimburse me. Had the opportunity to fly Ravn Alaska and Ravn connect during recent biz trip to Alaska. Great parent airline and regional partner. Prices were excellent--very reasonable--found on line during recent "Ravn Deals" sale. Crews were motivated and energetic and looked sharp. Big turboprop Dash 8 aircraft in parent company were clean inside/out reminded me of nice cool/retro leather interiors -- lots of legroom, not too noisy, awesome flight attendants and ground crew, and fantastic home baked snickerdoodle cookies! Would highly recommend them, especially since you don't have to deal with TSA lines and get to go straight to airplane. Connect/regional flies smaller Cessna Caravan aircraft that made me a bit apprehensive at first, but awesome pilot with great skills made the ride smooth, safe, and enjoyable. I sat on hold for 15 minutes to purchase my 16 year old daughter a ticket this morning. When she got to the airport, she was told she was 2 minutes late of the cut off time (due to a hold up at the motel where she was staying) and they wouldn't let her on the plane. They told me they had already closed the plane door. 25 minutes before take off? Not likely. I will NEVER use Ravn or recommend them to anyone. They take your money and don't deliver service. Just an update to this, after they refused to let my daughter on the plane because she arrived 2 minutes late, I found out that she was in line to check in at the time they decided to close the flight. It's always a great experience - no TSA lines, plenty of room to check all the luggage we need for the weekend, and you can beat the views from the plane. Absolutely HORRIBLE experience with Ravn Air (aka: Pen Air) out of Anchorage last week. Had reservations on the 10:50 AM flight to King Salmon (was supposed to catch the 1 PM flight out to Brooks with Katmai Air). First, our flight was delayed 4 hours due to a maintenance issue. We were told to come back at 3 PM. So, we all had to find something to do for 4 hours...then when we got back, they kept delaying it by 20 minutes several times (each time telling us not to leave the area, so no one could ever get dinner or anything), before finally loading us onto a plane around 7 PM that had been sitting there for a couple of hours...then a light was on in the cockpit, so they unloaded all of us (oh, and btw, they never even TOLD us that we were boarding that plane...the only way we knew was because we saw our luggage being loaded onto it). Needless to say, we never reloaded onto that plane, but instead loaded onto a very tiny plane around 9 PM. When we got to King Salmon, we had no way of getting to Brooks Lodge until the next morning (so we missed our first night at Brooks Lodge). The whole thing was a complete disaster...with no apologies or explanation by Ravn Air. I would NEVER fly this airline again. Zero communication...zero taking responsibility...zero customer service. I am shocked this airline is even in business. read more

I highly recommend that if there are any other options available for air travel to your destination, you utilize them and stay away from Ravn Air. I've flown them for years, only when there were no other options, and I've long since lost count of the number of times they've left me stranded or failed in some other way. I've often wondered if they cancel more flights than are actually flown. The latest in dozens of issues I personally have experience is them cancelling a flight one hour after it was booked and then refusing to refund the ticket cost - absolutely ridiculous. I honestly don't know how this airline manages to stay in business between the bankruptcies, crashes, deaths, FAA shutdowns, and owner changes over the past decade. I have flown Ravn dozens of dozens of times: from Kenai to Anchorage, Anchorage to Fairbanks, Fairbanks to Galena, and the most special of all, Anchorage to Bethel. Most of the time they aren't that bad. Their staff is alright. Flights come with cookies sometimes, tasty Alaskan made cookies. Not too bad, still cannot compete with Alaska's free beer they would hand out from Anchorage to Fairbanks. *Thumbs up* But then there is Bethel. Now, to be fair, Bethel is not a vacation spot for most, but home to a few. A major hub for villages in southwestern AK. I have traveled through this hub many a time going out for work, dark times (Literally, as it was winter). The only show in town to get to these villages happens to be Ravn, and it sure seems like it when you have to wait on standby in their terminal. I recall being 18 years old, receiving instructions from the mine operator that if I needed to use the restroom at this fine establishment that I would find better sanitary conditions squatting by the roadside. By god he was right, but a mute point. Traveling through this Bethel terminal one will feel in limbo. Time starts for no person, beast, or plane. I would like to add that I have had diarrhea more helpful than this staff. However, if you throw a fit like a toddler trapped inside an angry 55 year old man's body, they will reload a plane for you. Rightfully so they were the reason for the situation but that's a tale for another time. If you a trapped into using Ravn Alaska: pray for no delay, cheat your way onto the flight, enjoy the cookie, and live to fly Alaska another day. read more

I fly RAVN often, mostly on village trips. I think I've had one flight that departed on time ever. Excuses seem to be the speciality of the agents, everything from weather delay (even though flights have been flying all day) to no pilots or no planes are used routinely. The Bethel customer line is rarely picked up. My last flight back to Bethel was 4 hours late, then stopped at an additional village. When I got to Bethel it took them over 20 minutes to get my bags out. I'd asked for a courtesy shuttle, they told me the driver was ready, yet I had to ask a second time. By the time I made it to the Alaska Air terminal I'd missed the checked bag checkin cut off. I wish I could say this was unusual, but I would say it's the norm. read more

I boasted to my wife about the convenience factor of flying RAVN from a check in perspective, but they're really making me look bad after we decided to use them for vacation to Kodiak. The flight out of Anchorage was delayed by roughly 2 hours and the explanation seemed sketchy and unintelligible. We probably could have let that go after cookies and the pleasant attendant, but the botched return flight from Kodiak to Anchorage is going to put a damper on flying RAVN in the future. We got down the runway and then stopped and returned to the gate due to a warning/mechanical issue. We all were wondering what was going on and they seemed to wait a long time for communication. Talk of flying in a mechanic from Anchorage to look at it was obviously a downer, but some clear communication after that would be nice when you've got a plane full of people sitting in the lobby. Telling passengers what you are planning on doing and how you're going to get people to their destination isn't an unreasonable expectation I don't think. Having to randomly try to figure it out and decide whether we chance changing flights is totally lame and unprofessional. I see in other reviews this appears to be a systemic issue. So we're now on a 3:30pm flight instead of an 11:15am flight and I've heard other passengers that have it worse. Never heard of a replacement flight. This isn't Bubba's Backyard Airlines and clearly this isn't the first delay or cancellation they've had, so you'd think they could have figured out some contingency plans and a communication plan. Final kicker is our rescheduled flight was also late to leave. read more

Worst experience of my life and I haven't even made it past the booking tickets portion! The website is virtually useless, you cannot edit anything and have to start over if something changes. You cannot cancel a flight on the website and no one ever answers the phone. I was literally on hold for 2 hours trying to cancel a flight, as a result I was not able to cancel in time and will have to pay the full fare as well as the fare for my new ticket. When I finally talked to someone I stated my reason for calling and got dead silence for a response, I said hello are you still there? and all of a sudden she says " Ma'am, if you would like to continue please watch your language" I am floored! read more

We had arranged a flight from Kaktovik to Anchorage. On the day of the flight they cancelled all flights for two days due to weather. At both locations visibility was 20 miles. We ended up talking to Tim in Marsh Creek Inn and he suggested charting our own flight. We called into Anchorage and charted a flight which landed and took off with no problem. At least they could have given us a valid reason. Called Expedia and we got our money back. read more

Ravn Airlines provides very poor service in a very important and necessary market. They are inconsistent and terrible about giving updates on late arrival or late departure information went you are waiting on flights. Their baggage handing is absolutely terrible. I have had two computers crushed (ruined) in standard sized carry-on bags that they made me check and twice they have lost my bags between Kenai and Anchorage. I have no idea how that is possible, but I had to ask them to find my bags on the cart in the back. One day two of us lost four bags on the 20 minute flight that only had 10 people on board. If you ever have a close connection in Anchorage to a Kenai flight you can watch the baggage handlers stand around the concourse or tarmac while your bags miss the flight. They provide absolutely no extra service - all just lay back, minimal and poor service. Their web site is a joke. There is a different login process to log in to redeem miles or purchase tickets for cash. The site constantly kicks you out and you have to re-enter all information. This airlines really needs management and leadership changes with people who can focus on and direct quality service. read more

Terrible all around. I've flown hundreds of flights to rural destinations in Alaska over the past three decades spanning back to the Mark Air, Era and Penn Air days. Since Ravn has taken over, the majority of the time i have to use this airline, i do not make my destination on time or at all. Consistently late, delayed, cancelled, or even worse they'll fly to the destination then refuse to land due to weather then fly you back to start the whole process over again. Just today i had reservations to fly to Kodiak. The original flight was delayed, we eventually loaded and flew the hour route from Anchorage to Kodiak. There was some fog near the runway so the pilot aborted his initial landing attempt. We circled for 20 minutes. The pilot said he was going to attempt again but bugged out before even attempting an aproach. Flew us back to Anchorage where i got scheduled on the next fight, which was delayed. After waiting around on weather hold for 2 hours, that flight was also cancelled. When i called my family in Kodiak to ask about the weather, i was told that all commuter flights, mostly single engine Cesnas, had been making it in and out all day without trouble. Yet Ravn couldn't land due to a little fog and probably just cancelled the last flight because they either didn't want to or couldn't make the run yet claimed it was due to weather. I've had similar experiences with them delaying flights for hours before eventually cancelling due to mechanical problems, staffing issues and even not having a plane for a scheduled flight. No joke, have been told that they simply did not have a plane to fly a regularly scheduled route and did not bother informing the passengers until we had all checked bags, been ticketed and were waiting at the gate for an overdue departure. Worst airline I've ever had to deal with, period. Hopefully Alaskans will get another option for rural aviation sometime soon. read more

We had already booked and boarded a flight on the Alaska Airways flight. Now, we are in the process asking for a refund. Avoid this airline if you can. Today's flight was scheduled to depart at 3:50pm, but didn't leave until 5:08pm. This is typical. I have flown with this company 8 times since they changed their name from Era to Ravn, and every flight has been late. While waiting for my during flights out of Anchorage I have noticed that every other flight to other destinations are also late. They always blame it on mechanical problems which leads me to believe the fleet is not safe. A professional airline be should be able to keep a flight schedule. In addition, some of the planes have such low head space that I've seen grown men sitting with their necks bent to avoid hitting the ceiling. t's unfortunate that they have the market monopolized in my small town or I would never fly with them again. read more

If you are looking to be taken advantage of, price gouged, have your flight delayed by an hour or more then leave 30min before the new boarding time so you'll be forced to pay a change of ticket fee more then the original price of your ticket so you will have to just buy another ticket but conveniently all of the "non-refundable" tickets will be sold out but will still be a few bucks cheaper then the change fee!? Well then Ravn is the airline just for you!! Wether you are a regular traveler for business, work or pleasure Ravn will make sure they do something to try and trip you up and put you into a position where they will be able to get another $160.00 out of your purse or wallet and into their pockets. If you are looking for that special airline that won't consider any other airlines possible delays due to idk say weather or any other inconvenience into consideration, do you like last minute gate changes so even if you are there waiting at the gate printed on you ticket (don't worry we will make sure both up stairs and down stairs flight status screens are shut off with an out of order tag on them so you can't check on your flight yourself.... and don't have your headphones on because know one ever has headphones on in the airport) so it will be that much easier for us to sneak off and leave you and ultimately price gouge you! And don't be fooled by any other reviews because here at Ravn AK we like to write our own five star reviews to try and combat the one and two stars given from actual costumers. Don't worry we don't like to pay our mechanics either so our planes will give you that little bit of extra excitement of "it's not gonna make it" that everyone is looking for!! Luggage went missing on Saturday August 22nd, 2015, ADQ to ANC. Baggage department will not answer the phone.
