Sadly, this place seems to be closed now, but it is almost certain that The Raven's name owes its origin to Edgar Allan Poe's masterpiece. The black figurine at the top of the building, as well as the image on the pub sign, are very similar to the iconic bird's representations in the engravings by Gustave Dore and Edouade Manet.
The building itself dates back to 1904, and is located almost opposite Wigan Wallgate rail station. The boards outside still carries the drink and meals offers, but the entire edifice seems to be somewhat "weak and weary", as if the once buoyant life there is well and truly "nevermore". read more
