My husband and I visited and were absolutely were enthralled by the beauty and craftsman that make up the inside of this home. They offer self guided tours for $15 with a pamphlet that takes you through the vast majority of the house, telling you about each room you visit. This is a very important site in the history of Montana. Being the site of the first settlement,first church,first lumber mill, first grist mill, first organized agriculture; this is truly where Montana began. What first struck me on an initial visit, was the quantity of ORIGINAL Artifacts on display. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. You will learn about the early days of the mission, how the settlers (Blackrobes) lived, worked and taught the native Salish and others. Recently added is a Salish encampment and teaching components on native Salish life. Several reproductions (made by a Salish artist) enhance the story for school groups and others. On the District grounds is also a museum, gift shop, and art gallery. On the west side of the District is the historic cemetery where Father Anthony Ravalli, Salish and early settlers are buried. The photographs are compelling but seemed slightly disorganized and are often missing dates to frame the chronology of the area. Admittedly the dates may be unknown in many cases, but it seems an educated guess, or a circa 18xx? would help some. The staff was friendly but kind of dispassionate. There is a lot to be excited and proud about if you live here, and a slightly higher level of enthusiasm would seem fitting. I'd add an audio tour feature and brag up both the town's history, and the compelling Granite ghost town just up the hill.

For adults we have an Evening Lecture Series, Sip & Sketch evenings taught by local artists, four-part classes on topics from nature writing to geology, as well as Naturalist Field Days on a variety of topics, from raptor migration to lichens to Glacial Lake Missoula. MNHC also offers several Montana Master Naturalist certification courses throughout the year. MNHC has a newly-renovated exhibit center filled with local animal specimens, information on Montana's ecosystems, a diverse fossil display, rotating exhibits in our Naturalist Field Station, and an exhibit on Glacial Lake Missoula. There is an interactive Kids' Discovery Room, an Environmental Education Library with books for both children and adults, a small native plant garden, and a Nature Adventure Garden for outdoor play.
