When I was younger, fitter, and more agile, I use to take my water sports neat! This meant bare footing, (water skiing without skis), and body surfing, (surfing without a board). There's a few essential ingredients that make water-sports without equipment possible, the two main ones being speed and weight... a high speed to low weight ratio is the name of the game! Unfortunately, where body surfing is concerned this means big waves, (and by that I mean BIG waves), and a low body fat content... hmmmm.... you see my problem...!?
India makes much better waves than the UK... down on the South coast of Kerala they make 'em mean and clean... you really can't get much better! They would often come in about as high as a bungalow (which is a Hindi word btw), and this made body surfing eminently possible, even for the denser, musclebound 'dudes'. Swansea is really the closest place to Cardiff for a half decent surf, but the waves never threaten to get anywhere big enough to make body surfing possible...
All well and good for our friends at RatRigs, who sell the two essential items for surfing in the UK. The first is a good wet-suit, (have you felt the temperature of the sea recently? Brrrr!), and a board. I use a boogie-board instead of a surf board, and RatRig supplies both. This is one of the better surf shops I have been to, (in the world). They have been around a fair while, they know their stuff and have a good selection of stock. They are pretty darned friendly too!
Hot tip: NEVER water-ski without a wet-suit!!!! You can do yourself a real injury when you wipe out if you don't! RatRigs have some really good wet suits in their sale at the moment! read more
