Mike on the footwear department was very professional and knowledgeable on the products. I came in to view the selection of higher end outdoor products and was met with his excellent service. He gave great knowledge about the sizing of certain shoes and recommended a few based on my size. He was very friendly and approachable making for a great experience in store. read more

A first port of call when looking for outdoor clothing. A local family business staffed by friendly and helpful staff who are always able to give good technical advice. After sales service is excellent. I recently had difficulty fitting newly purchased microspikes to my boots. I emailed the shop and in spitee of lockdown, Mr Rathbone immediately contacted me with helpful fitting advice and offered to change them if I still had difficulty. Terrible customer service. Sold me £200 Altberg Nordkapp boots not fit for purpose then blamed me for choosing them! The boots lasted less than 200 miles and they offered no refund or replacement. Avoid this company and Altberg boots as they fall apart way too quickly for the money. read more

The BEST service ever, quite contrary to recent reviews here. I was stupid enough to remove the metal stays from my new rucksack, and more than one member of staff at Rathbones spent time on the phone trying to help and advise me how to get them back in. Finally it was suggested that I post it to them, and it came back 2 days later by first class post, job done, no charge. THE worst service I have EVER experienced in this country I'm afraid. Went into the shop in March '11 to purchase a pair of walking boots for my 11 yr old daughter. An old Scottish shop assistant asked whether he could help me. I asked if he sold walking "shoes". He replied in a very sarcastic manner that they sold walking "boots" but not walking "shoes", I laughed sweetly and said "Oh, I meant walking "boots" not shoes, hoping that he would laugh along with my tragic error. He said, "well why didn't you blooXy well say so". I was aghast and stormed out of the store with my 11year old and her 10 year old sister. Thought he might have had a few drams or something at lunchtime. Not nice. We stay in the Lakes near to Keswick several times a year, never will I go into that horrible store again!!!!! This is a small family run outdoor clothing shop just along from Woolies. They tend to stock the better names in outdoor kit - Paramo,Rab,Berghouse etc. The staff are very knowledgeable about the kit. I recently went to buy a pair new pair of walking boots. I do lots of walking but only around the Lake District and not very much winter walking. The guy advised me very well, and did not try to sell up unnecessarily (unlike lots of shops in Keswick - who needs B3 boots for a walk around the lake?). My only criticism was I ripped the Rab down jacket i'd purchased from them and went in to see if they could advise me where to get it fixed at - they were very unhelpful and just wrote down the number of RAB HQ. I try to buy locally, but feel I would have had better customer service, in this instance, off Costwolds or Blacks. They are also not good at getting deals off, I was buying 24Season Rab Sleeping bags (rrp £299 each) and a Rab down jacket (rrp £200) and they would not do a deal with me. Needless to say i purchased elsewhere and got a great discount. read more

Very poor customer service. My husband went to enquire about returning an item and the gentleman at the counter was very rude to him. First, I understand if a store doesn't allow returns, but they should make that explicitly clear when purchasing. Many stores that don't allow returns usually have a sign near the register informing customers of this. Second, regardless of how a customer behaves, a shopkeeper should at least be polite. My husband was very calm and was simply questioning why he couldn't return the item - the man at the counter kept being rude to him. It made us go do the rest of our shopping at Cotswold instead. read more
