Actually, what was annoying was that the outside area was pretty packed which meant that we ended up having to sit inside, which wasn't a bad thing, but the European outside experience is much better than it is in Australia (in many cases they try to be European and fail abyssimally - for some reason I simply don't like sitting on sidewalk seats in Australia). Anyway, this is basically a beer bar, and a pretty cool one at that. When I was there it was pretty quiet (except for the fact that there were no seats outside) but it had a pretty nice atmosphere and a great interior. Personally I probably can't say all that much beyond that, expect that it was pretty cool and I really enjoyed it.

Jazz music playing in the background , a trombone and saxophone on the wall, requisite photos of Louie and Etta on the walls, etc. Its all locals, but they are all friendly and will talk to you if you talk to them. It's not a tourist trap, and it's not 400 years old, but it has a vibe that keeps me coming back. If you are staying at the Ghent River Hotel it's two blocks past it, and you must stop in for a lemon Genever.

The service was warm and friendly right from the start, which always sets the tone. I ordered an arugula sandwich, and honestly, it was surprisingly delicious! Fresh, flavorful, and just the right portion for a light snack. My husband went for a coffee while I had a citrus tea -- both hit the spot. Even though it was a chilly day, lots of locals were sitting outside enjoying their drinks (clearly tougher than us!). As desert dwellers, we were more than happy to cozy up inside where it was warm. A simple, lovely little café that made for the perfect pre-museum stop!

The ONLY place to catch live blues music in Ghent! It is a bit like a dive bar, but the place is…read morepacked whenever there is live music. Of our 3 evenings in the city, we spent 2 of them here! The open mike night is incredible, with a rock solid opening band that then backs up solo musicians. We could easily have stayed until closing, but after a few Belgian beers and jet lag, we reluctantly bid our farewell. The drinks are great here too, plus there is food to be had.
