Driving through small highway towns in rural Montana, the casual "Near Me" search of Yelp often…read morereveals some pretty obscure things... or at least, things you wouldn't find in the city: manure hauling, agriculture businesses, and the like. And then, there are often just people's names listed without any real information. Intrigued by the possibilities, and with the kids hounding me for yet another restroom break as we drove across this great land, I called on the Waldos to sample their wares and assess the nature of their business advertised on Yelp. Imagine my eager mirth to discover that Richard and Marjorie are the proud proprietors of the North American Slip N Slide Museum! Their modest three acre lot features no fewer than 50 slip n slides, all connected to hoses that cross cross their property. For a mere $6 for adults and $3 for children, visitors can enjoy multi-colored watery slides across the rolling grass fields behind their house. Marjorie wheels a small cart around the place, providing visitors with lemonade and some kind of punch made from local raspberries, followed closely by her two pet chickens, Rhett and Scarlet. Roger plays American standards on his ukulele, backed by must what be one of the best jug bands I've ever heard. I was amazed to learn that the the earliest slip n slides were little more than chaffed wheat husks soaked in soapy water runoff from horse stables... I guess kids were tougher back then. I also was intrigued by a neighbor of the Waldo's, a fella named Randall "Skunk" Masterson, who claimed he had not bathed in 35 years, instead just visiting the Slip N Slide Museum daily, even in cold weather. We could tell. You never know what treasures might be tucked away in these small towns, and the Waldos didn't disappoint. Can't imagine when I'll be back here, but I guess there's always our next circuitous road trip to discover America. Thanks Richard and Marjorie for your nebulous listing of yourselves on Yelp. This is as one of the best burgers I've ever had. It was delicious! It had a big fried green tomato and vinaigrette. The fries had great flavor and texture. The Roy Rogers is why I love stopping at the small town, locally owned establishment. This is a great place to eat, and the locals are very friendly. I got to meet the town mayor and a couple of his pals and we had an awesome conversation. Thank you for the great food and atmosphere! I hope to be back someday soon.
