Mama says this is completely authentic Mexican food. First off, we were the only non-Hispanic people there- good sign... and the prices were amazing! The food was flavorful and the toppings bar was full of fresh and spicy delights. This is not the place to go if you're looking for upscale, watered down Mexican food. This is a restaurant in a little strip plaza with lots of colors and tv's playing football (soccer). From growing up with a plethora of Hispanic friends and being lucky enough to eat at their homes, this is really good food. I'll be back at least once a week. Be good to yourself. At some Mexican restaurants, I get a burrito and at other places I will get enchiladas. However Rancho Grande is where I get my taco fix. There are many different options and combinations of tacos to choose from, but I always get the steak tacos or in Spanish, Asada. I am able to get 2 of 3 tacos because an individual taco isn't too expensive. It's like $1.50 for each. When they give you your taco, it is just plain. However you can go to the salsa bar and add some tomatoes or lime to your taco. I eat my taco plain and I still think it tastes great! The steak was tender, juicy, and well seasoned. It was a perfect taco. I also love drinking their Horchata. Horchata is a rice drink that is very sweet with a hint of cinnamon. They make their Horchata extra sweet. Although on the outside, Rancho Grande doesn't look like a restaurant, the inside is a great place to get some tacos! read more

Not knowing what to expect when I walked in, I felt it was a little intimidated. You have to order at the window and the menu is definitely geared Spanish. Don't come here expecting chimichangas. I ordered the enchilada platter. My husband ordered two tacos and rice and beans. Don't come here and expect to be in a hurry. I guess everything seems to be from scratch it takes a while. Forget Taco Bell, south of the border , chipotle and all these so called places that have tacos. This place has authentic little tacos. They are delicious and have everything from tongue to chicken to pork etc. they have beer and other juices. They also have soup that is very good. There is a condiments stand to load up your tacos. My first couple times here, I visited later at night like 8-9 pm. The pastor and asada were kind of dry and chewy. I wanted to like the place but it didn't meet my expectations. Came back at lunchtime, and everything was much better. All the meat was tender. The pastor had a delicious smoky flavor. The topping bar is best in the area. Some of the dinner plates I saw looked excellent. Glad I gave this place another chance and I'll definitely return. read more

Kind of a mom and pop type place. Authentic tacos. Full topping bar with traditional Mexican taco toppings. Place is normally filled with people just getting off work. The tacos here are easily some of the best I've had. The Mexican food in Cary is really good in general but this place stands out. The quesadillas are awesome too. Authentic taqueria!! A mile from my house! Ole! It looks and feels like Mexico in the best way. Delicious authentic tacos awaiting adornment at the impressive salsa bar with so much more than the typical hot/mild/pico fare you see typically. The camerones Diablo were spectacular- huge, perfectly cooked shrimp, with the best beans/rice side I've had in NC. I'll be back to try the weekend sopas asap. Service is fast and polite, you don't need to order in Spanish but it makes the experience more fun--It's like a little trip across the border to brighten up any winter lunch/dinner decision when you can't decide what to do. read more

As far as mexican joints go this one is ok. They have a awesome selection, nice little condiment bar and the staff is super friendly. I've tried all of their tacos and they are good but not super-awesome-delicious. This seems to be more of a cheap food place. The menu is sprawling and it appears you can get just about any type of mexican food you fancy. Besides the mediocre food the only other downside is that the inside just has a grimy dirty feel to it. I got the impression from the two times I went there that about 90% of their clientele is contractors so they are bringing in a lot of dust and dirt with them. The tacos are delicious with good quality of meet. No fat inside! The lengua and asada tacos are my favorite! They have a very wide menu. The seafood menu and soup menu both look good! If you are looking for atmosphere this is not your place but if you want authentic Latin food this is the best place in the Triangle. My fiance and I eat there at least once a week. Its has the best, as we say in the south, fixin's bar in the area. You can make it as hot as you want it. If you're not crying you haven't picked the right side items. If you're not already a regular at Rancho Grande, eating there can be quite an experience. Immediately upon entering your senses are blasted with the intoxicating smell of Mexican cuisine and loud Latino music from both the dining area and the kitchen. It is clear you are in for a unique (in Raleigh) experience. The menu displays a wide variety of authentic Mexican dishes and drinks. My father and I ordered from the traditional platters menu; I had the Pollo Ranchero and he had the Bistec Encebollado (steak and onions). At first it seemed a bit pricey to me, but that was before we received our ample portions along with around seven small tortillas, served piping hot. The rice and refried beans were best I've had in Raleigh, and the chicken was spicy and flavorful. My dad, who grew up an avid fan of Mexican food in southern California, was in love with his bistec encebollado. The only problem was the consistency of my pollo ranchero; about halfway through the rice, beans, and chicken had turned into a kind of soup. A delicious mixture, but a soup nonetheless. This is definitely a must-visit in Raleigh if you love authentic Mexican food. I can guarantee I'll be back; there's so much more left on the menu to try! read more

This place reminds me a little of the taco shops in San Diego. These were usually after clubbing destinations where we'd feast on rolled tacos with guac and cheese. I was a fan of Rancho Grande right when I saw they had spicy carrots. NO other place around has these. They were a staple at all of the So Cal taco shops. That's what gives this place an extra star. While the Triangle still sports some outstanding taquerias, Racho Grande still remains my favorite, even including those up in Durham. The meats are as good as you are going to find ANYWHERE and there is a very wide selection (including a lot of the "other" meats). The place, while not fancy, is always clean and the "condiments" bar is always well stocked and clean. This has been my "go to" for years, and while I wouldn't take somebody uncomfortable with high atmosphere expectations or unwilling to scrape through a bit of rudimentary spanish to order, it's the place I come to time and time again. read more

This place is fantastic! Very authentic and super affordable. Great tacos and a nice salsa bar. At first we were hesitant to try it out as this area in Cary and this particular strip mall seemed slightly under developed, however it was just fine. Everyone was more than friendly, you always walk out feeling like you just got a great deal and the food IMHO is the best Mexican in Cary. The food here is excellent! From the tacos (which come on two corn tortillas so you can really make a $1.50 taco into two) to the huaraches, ceviche tostadas, burritos, and quesadillas, all have been very tasty. They have a good selection of meats and many seafood dishes as well. My favorite is the barbacoa de chivo (goat barbecue), but the spicy pork is also very good! The quesadillas are very large with great crumbly cheese. The best part of this place is the toppings bar. About 6 different salsas, chopped onion, cilantro, different types of slaws, roasted jalapeños, etc. Great stuff to pile on your dishes. Be warned, many things on the bar are incredibly spicy/habanero. The menu is in English and Spanish, but it is very authentic. And we are usually the only white people in there when we've gone! The only thing I don't like is that the music/TV is sometimes up incredibly loud, and there is not readily accessible water so with all that spiciness it is painful! We live right up the road so we usually get stuff to go. Give it a try!! read more

The tacos here are fabulous, and the salsa bar is good. The mojarra is delicious, rivaling that of Fiesta Grill in Chapel Hill (which is sadly, too far of a trip now that we live in Cary). We go to Rancho Grande a lot. My only complaint is the deafening music. A friend of mine who had lived in Mexico City for 2 years recommended this to us. I now understand why. This place reminded me of Mexican places I had gone to in Los Angeles many years ago. Truly authentic and typical of a place like this out there. The menu is in Spanish and English and the people working there know enough English for it to be easy to order. You go up to the window to order and then sit down. They will bring our food out. I think we were the only non-Latino people in the place but felt very welcome. There was a large group that came in behind us that looked like they had been working all day and they weren't partying or carrying on as others have warned. I had the steak ranchero and a taco while my wife had a burrito. Everything was excellent. Well, this place was a total surprise! As a vegetarian, I generally avoid more authentic Mexican places, since there's hardly anything I can eat. I was a little worried when I saw the menu, which was, as usual, about 98% meat - lingua, cabeza, tripa, chicharron, you name it. The lady at the counter was very helpful, though. She set me up with an egg huarache and veggie taco, which were both incredible - flavorful and full of colorful veggies. I was pleased to find that the the huarache was not actually the sandal of my 80's youth, but instead a thick layer of fried cornmeal with a thin layer of black beans inside it, shaped like a sandal. Mine had egg, cactus, avocado, and lots of other veggies on top. The taco was wrapped in two very fresh corn tortillas. To add even more flavor variety, the salsa bar is full of tasty extras - cabbage slaw, pickled carrots, peppers, several salsas, cilantro, limes, onions, etc. Just be aware that some of it is extremely spicy! read more
