We have lived at the foot of Montara Mountain for 15 years. It is the single truest paradise on Earth. No end to the adventures you will find on our Mountain. The 1,870ft vertical hike to the summit of North Peak will feel like twice that due to the extreme steepness of "The Wall" (entrance just past the ranger station, half a mile east from the highway gate) and the seven wildly steep and broad switchbacks that will take you to the long grinding summit trail.
The views are stunning. At the top you can see 360 all around the Golden Gate, to Mt. Diablo, to Mt. Hamilton and Fremont Peak. Mt. Tamalpias, the city of Pacifica, and of course the HMB coastside and the Farrallone Islands become closer, as though suddenly in the foreground instead of on the horizon.
Whales abound here this year. We have been watching them literally do the disney-fantasia breaching all the way out of the water thing. Sometimes dozens at a time are visible.
High on the endless trails, you will expect to see pteradactyls as the scenery becomes something out of the Land of the Lost.
Beware of coyotes at dawn and dusk this year as they are everywhere. Many locals and their dogs have been sneak attacked this summer & fall and taken nips, or even lost small pets.
Be careful about accidentally wandering down the PGE power pole trails off the face of the summit towards Montara. Stay on the main trails. Those side trails are steep and end at unpassible cliffs after a 1,400 vertical foot drop. I was doing extreme exploration on the South Summit and had to re-climb that one recently and it was VERY difficult.
Bring water and food and a mobile device as the trails are long. One of the most beautiful, rugged, and truly rural places within 20 miles of the center of a major city, in the US.
A photographer and philosopher's dream.
Local secret: If you want to try the steepest trail that is humanly possible to hike without falling, (about 250 vertical feet at a 30-40 degree angle, with some parts steeper), climb the trail to the lower mini-summit that is on the right when facing the mountain from Montara State Beach. It is an obvious trail that takes you up a steep climb to a thick patch of trees at the top (that is half as high as the full mountain behind it). Once you have reached the top of that climb (look at that view!), head down the other side. always veering to the left on the trails you come to. (go left, do NOT take the paved trail to the right - go the opposite way) At the bottom of that ridge, continuing to stay on the left trail options, you will take a left when offered and find yourself at the bottom of "the ski run". It is scary steep, but as it is made of "mogels" of dirt from water runoffs, you can jump from mogel to mogel as needed to get up the steepest parts. At the top, you can go right and go past the huge new water tank and find your way back to the beach on the Montara streets, or climb down the ski run and reverse your hike. Either way it is an adventure. Have done it over 50 times and it is always fun. read more
