I'm kicking myself for not visiting sooner! Scratch burgers are having a resurgence with places like Smashburger, Shake Shack, In-Out etc. This is a Portsmouth Classic if you are looking for a local flavor of a scratch burger. We both tried the iconic Big Mo, and wow--what a burger. Freshly made, perfectly cooked, and great flavor. The inside seating is cozy and nostalgic, with a counter option for a more classic diner vibe. Also, you can enjoy your meal in the comfort of your car, true drive-in style. What truly set this experience apart for me was learning the rich history of Jim Dandy. I was fascinated to discover that the business was started in 1965 by a former owner of three Frisch's Big Boy locations in the Portsmouth area. The story behind its origins added a whole new layer of appreciation for this local treasure. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by Jim Dandy. It's not just a meal; it's a bite of Portsmouth's history served with a side of charm.

I ordered a piece of strawberry pie, vegetable soup and beans and cornbread to take home. Tonight I was so looking forward to the beans but no beans, only two bowls of vegetable soup. My stomach was devastated. Lesson learned always open your bag no whether where you go to make sure you got what you ordered. Sad thing is I don't live near Portsmouth

This spot is movin' on up...in the Eastside lol! Okay, sorry. Had to. It's true though. They have…read morebeen revamping Stadium Lunch for about a year. I've stopped in a few times, and it has only continued to improve! While not from Portsmouth, I graduated from SSU. I also found my husband there at Shawnee, and he is a local; from the infamous Eastend! My in-laws actually live right across the street from Stadium Lunch! It's only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the university! It's always been a long-time favorite for locals. I remember several of my friends' parents from Portsmouth, and my in-laws were going to hang out after work. Have a bite and a few drinks. Now, we are our parents' age then, and the new owners are ready for "us" to start doing this kind of thing again! A fire pit, Edison lights, and great outdoor seating, with a bar top to people watch! We live about an hour away, towards Cincinnati, but are in town a few times a month. At least for a few hours to check in on my husband's Dad and brother. My MIL, unfortunately, passed away last fall. This is when I began to pop into Stadium Lunch more frequently. The propreiters hadn't owned long but were sure to extend their condolences and a small gift at that time. Only knowing them from my FIL stopping into pick up dinner occasionally when my MIL didn't feel like cooking(she was a wonder too!) I am not sure they realize how much this touched our hearts and was incredibly appreciated. I stopped in shortly afterward to extend a thank you in person. I missed them both, but I did have some incredible pot roast, a quick drink, and small talk with some patrons. I brought some home for the whole family after eating! We've had some great burgers and bbq. My FIL sneaks over to get burgers more than we know of! This weekend, we were in for a short trip. Stopped in for a quick drink. While spring, it felt like a crisp autumn night. Great feeling. They have expanded their kitchen, so I'm looking forward to tasting what new homemade specials they will have! I follow them on fb, and they are always having great happy hour, lunch, and dinner specials. Thanks for feeding my father-in-law and always being kind!

However, the best part is the waitress Lisa! She is ON it every morning, remembers names, always has a smile on her face, and is a literal beam of sunshine. That woman deserves a raise! Truly the best of the best. As for dinner & the bar, we ordered room service twice and everything was perfect. We got a burger and we fully expected it to be soggy. It was as though we had it freshly served in the restaurant. We did wait quite a while (they said it would be 20 minutes and we waited 50), but they quickly called and explained they'd had a rush. We called around 6:30pm so it was understandable. Truly the best food and service. We were never disappointed. Drinks are fantastic and averagely priced. You can't miss with Oscar's!

I wasn't going to look for another restaurant in Portsmouth so I just ate downstairs. Boy, was I lucky! The food at Oscars was absolutely incredible. First, I had a Manhattan prepared by Christie. Top-notch. Service was incredible. Then I had a steak kebab dinner and I have to tell you it is the best kebab steak I ever had. Perfectly prepared vegetables were so fresh and moist. On top of a bed of rice it could not have been better. I cannot recommend this place Hylie enough. Again I was here because I'm in the hotel and I didn't wanna travel around Portsmouth to find a place. I'm glad I stayed here. I highly recommend this restaurant.
