Well for the second time this week I found myself sat behind a balti wok- got to love friends'…read morebirthdays! Well their restaurant of choice was Millennium Balti. We don't usually venture over this side of Birmingham. It was easy enough to find set back from the main road. Parking wasn't so easy, though but we did find a space in the neighbouring street. The staff had set a long table for our party. From the second we walked through the door we received a warm reception. The restaurant is not licenced but there is an off licence next door. We had the usual poppadums and dips to start. The menu is varied with so much mouth-watering choice. As I don't eat meat I sometimes find the choice monotonous- but not at Millennium Balti. My husband and son had their usual sheesh kababs. There were 2 kebabs to a portion and were freshly cooked with onions, dip and salad. I had the vegetable platter . Both were freshly cooked and delicious. Lastly we had prawn balti, lamb balti and 2 portions of chicken kurma rice and 2 nan. The baltis were a little sweeter than we are used to but delicious. With fresh ingredients they were a delight. The staff gave the birthday boy the birthday cake we sneaked in and the whole restaurant serenaded along with us. The whole bill came to £35 what a bargain!!! Although we were a big group they happily divided us into the groups we wished to pay with to safe any confusion. Millennium Balti is a little treasure and a bargain especially as no overpriced drinks to buy . But shhhhhhhhhhhh don't tell anyone as I want to return and I want to be able to get a table.

Well this all started with a bit of a dilemma here, our favourite curry provider in northfield…read morehappens to be take away only so we thought we'd venture onto the high street and try Omar's after receiving a pretty good takeaway from them previously. Why did we wait so long? The decor insode is flush with blue and purple soft lighting and drapes, the waiters were very polite and straight on hand to help with your every need. The menu, well, we'd promised it was a quick bite but starters, mains sides and a forced down desert argued with that one (doggie bags for the left over mains were a life saver!). A range of unusual chefs specials suitable for both veggies and meat eaters alongside the standard brummie curry choices (dopiaza, rogan josh, tikka, bhuna etc...) meant we needed an extra 10 minutes to narrow it down from one of everything on the menu to what we actually wanted! As a sample menu example my choices consisted of: poppadums with mango chutney, mint yoghurt, lime pickle and tomato chilli mixed tikka starter for one Keema meatball curry with extra green chillies (just wow!) garlic pilau rice cheese and chilli naan and a pistachio kulfi to finish (only because we could, there was no room left at this point!) Cobra and Tiger beers were readily available alongside a small selection of spirits. A repeat trip may well be needed to sample the mango lassi here (I'm sure there will be no complaints if the rest of the experience is as good as this vist was)

I'm entertaining a touring Canadian band and we're sat outside The Hare & Hounds having a beer. We…read moretalk about getting some food before the show and we get onto the subject of Asian food. 'We know the best curry restaurant outside of Asia', one of them proclaims, 'Its in Vancouver.' I point at Sylhet Spice cuisine over the road and say 'THAT'S the best curry restaurant outside of Asia'. The gauntlet having been throw down, we cross the road and enter in... Sat inside, the ambiance is nice. Yes, 'nice'. There is high-end dining furniture and a waterfall-down-a-mirror feature. The menu is vast, and detailed. The style of cooking here is from the Sylhet region in the North East of Bangladesh, so its not surprising that at this restaurant the chef performs magic dishes with fish. They have some dishes here that I have never seen before in any restaurant, and I could happily eat the lot. I'm tempted by Salmon Tarkari, but instead I order Lamb Jal-Zala. It is an extremely hot dish, but I'm not eating it as a kind of macho prove-myself exercise. This dish is not only very, very hot, but has some complex tastes in it; after the initial shock of the first hot mouth full, the palate adjusts and the chilli having dilated the taste buds, all the glorious complexities of the carefully blended spices and meat are experienced. I'm sandwiching meat between buttery, fluffy nan bread and mopping the sauce with the same. My face is soaking. I am in ecstasy. My guests are halfway thorough their meal and looking sheepish and satisfied. They agree that its a close call as the whether their Vancouver eatery is the superior one or their newly-found Bangladeshi paradise. When I find myself in Vancouver next, we'll be up for round two...

The menu is vast with many speciality dishes, which I am always a fan of, to be able to try something orginal and special to the restuarant. Food is always of a high standard and always have a great meal, along with my friends, we don't have any complaints. On my last visit, I had the Shobzi Bihari which is a North Indian dish, full of spice and flavour, which I recomend to anyone. To accompany this rich main dish, I had the Saag and Garlic fried rice which was a delight and I have never had this combination in rice before. My only downside is that I find the service a bit lacking every time I have visited..but not enough for me to take off a star. Sylhet Spice would be in my favourite Indians in Birmingham!
