John Knox has a great reputation in the Lee's Summit community for a reason. All social workers, directors of nurses, nursing staff, housekeeping, maintenance and cafeteria workers go above and beyond in the good care they provide. And it's all because they care. I've not been shy about expressing my brother's needs and my concerns. I always receive kindness and appropriate action from everyone. My family is very blessed that JKV is caring for my brother. DON'T BUY IN... Save your money and keep your future options open…read more Independent Living at John Knox Village is very satisfying for most residents. On the surface, the atmosphere and grounds are very inviting and conveniently located near shopping areas. As time moves on, however, and assisted living and/or nursing care become necessary, the risk is high that the policies and conditions will disappoint. For example, transportation and activities at the Assisted Living facility, once plentiful, have diminished over the years. The Skilled Nursing Unit at the Care Center, especially Long Term Care, is delinquent with missing medication dosages, very long wait times for call buttons, and high staff turnover, resulting in confusion of dosages and patients. Hearing aids? Staff is commonly not aware of how to insert them or the need to change batteries. Weekends are especially devoid of clinical help. Administration operates on the bottom dollar. They squander resources needed for reforms and additional help so they can build and market to attract new residents. Instead of buying in and paying for future care in the Care Center, parents should carefully invest that money so that they can move to another facility should they become unhappy. Buying in is like buying futures in the market; it is gambling that the future care will meet the needs. The sales pitch is seductive, promising great things that simply do not meet reality. There are PROS: amazing volunteers, without whom JKV would be truly substandard, and the residents, who are very sweet and friendly.

I recently had a difficult placement situation moving a friend from a Kansas City, MO assisted care…read morefacility to one in Oshkosh, WI. She had been abandoned by her family and wanted to move back where she grew up. She did not have a picture ID or a birth certificate so flying her home was impossible as TSA would not have let her board a plane. With the help of Care Patrol of Appleton, WI, we contacted Ron Braun at Care Patrol KCMO. Ron made multiple visits to see her and arranged for her to move out of her Kansas City facility. He volunteered to drive her half way to Oshkosh to Iowa City, IA where I met him. He packed her belongings into his SUV and then drove her to Iowa City and then right back home, a 10 hour trip for him!!!! Afterwards, he arranged for her assisted care apartment to be cleaned out. To say this was above and beyond the call of duty is an understatement. The sacrifice and care Ron demonstrated to us was incredible. Needless to say, my friend, her new assisted care facility, and I were simply blown away by what Ron did. Thank God for Ron Braun and Care Patrol KCMO. Do not hesitate to contact them for assisted care or nursing home placement needs. I gave them 5 stars only because that's the maximum rating, they deserved 10 stars!

4/25/22 So…read moredisappointed in the leadership here now. This morning the Executive Director absolutely lied to me. Over the past several months it has become apparent to several residents and their families this isn't a good facility to live in & we're moving our loved ones out en masse. My family has had older family members here for years & it's very sad to see what it has turned into. The current team probably does a great sales presentation to prospective residents and their families. But as far as trustworthy & competent leadership, please look elsewhere.

Two years into it her disease progressed and we were given a letter that we had 30 days to move her somewhere else because she had reached a level they were not equipped to handle. Therefore, it is clear we were mislead from the beginning when they told us she could stay until the end. Had we known that up front, she would never have been placed there. We felt betrayed.

There has been a lot of turnover, the cleanliness of the place was not up to par. Laundry was an issue, as well as the food! All of the staff we loved quit and several residents moved. We hung in there because my mom likes it there and every place has issues. True, some more than others but what is different about Homestead is they were aware of the many issues and trying to fix them. Recently, we got a new LOCAL Regional Vice President. And she is very experienced and involved. We have formed a family council and she has been at our meetings. Which is not the case with other facilities. I have to also say that she has gotten more done than anyone has in the last few years! It is wonderful. She has brought back several wonderful past employees. And has hired a new chef. They are working on the menu to include several items to choose from. Fresh soup of the day, not canned! A waffle station as well as an omelet station. And in the spring, renovations should begin to bring the facility up to date. We are finally moving in the right direction! I certainly would not rule this place out for your loved one. The one thing I can give 5 stars to, is the activities director!! Wow, is she wonderful. The facility has a new van and they go on several outings, lunch bunch and more. Lots of activities! I still believe that Homestead will be the best it ever has been and there will be a waiting list to get in.

My grandmother has been living here for over two years and every second that she's lived here has been a complete and total disaster. My grandmother has had multiple trips to the hospital over the years that I have now lost count. If your loved one is suffering from a memory disease such as dementia do not send your loved one here!!!!!! From housekeeping staff not doing their job and lying and saying that they do to staff members poorly treating your loved ones behind closed doors. How do I know this? The condition of my grandmother got so bad to the point to where we had to collectively go out and buy a security camera to place in her room to make sure that she is safe at all times because the staff that you pay For this type of security fails to do their job. If you have no other choice, but to put your loved one in this facility, I would highly recommend a security camera since my family and I have installed a security camera in my grandmother's room. We've seen footage of employees eating her food off of her bed tray, proof of her not being checked on between 6-10 hours at a time, and the director of the facility is just as terrible as the establishment itself. She wont respond to calls, she wont respond to texts, and yes, we can only talk to her when we go up there and discover she is on the clock. Overall NOT a good place for a loved one. JUST DONT DO IT.
