Stunning views of the lake and mountains

To me, this was the spot the locals are trying to keep to themselves. I discovered this by just chatting up the locals in the Olympic plaza and asking them what are the 'must do before leaving Whistler'. With a single mention of Rainbow Park from one, you hear the overwhelming chorus of 'YES' from everyone else. Well then... that's settled. Driving to Rainbow Park feels a bit hidden as it takes you away from the crowds of Whistler village. You drive around the more wooded areas west of Alta Lake and the park entrance is very clear that you've arrived at the right spot. In the mid afternoon, it wasn't busy but it was clear a lot of families were there enjoying the lake swimming or just sitting on the grass enjoying the sun. As we got out the car, a lot more people were arriving with kayaks or paddle boards. This definitely was a place to enjoy the landscape without the crowds. There's also a little smaller beach area that is off leash... it's right by the docks and the dogs were just doing running leaps into the water. When I was there, this was the most crowded spot as all the families set up their spots on the green space while they watched their dogs just live the best life by running in and out of the water. The funniest part is that the docks seems to be a natural launching point ... even the tinest littlest dogs seem to be their hamster leaps in joy there. I do have to take a moment to explain why everyone said this THEE spot I had to visit. It was one of the very few beautiful spots that allows you to see all the peaks clearly without a single building in front of you AND you have this beautiful huge lake as your feet. They were totally right. The day I was there, I could clearly see Whistler peak, Blackcomb, and Spearhead. Every snow cap and every ridge was easily seen while I basked in the summer sun. If there isn't anyone swimming or paddling in the lake, it becomes so still and mirrors every white cap on the mountain. Just... unbelievable. It's such a tranquil setting and I can see why every local would love to spend an afternoon by the lake staring at the mountains occasionally while reading a book. I know some people would love to chill on a Whistler village bar patio with only the view of another building and a lot of drinking bros near you. Some people like that vibe but for those who want to experience that true beauty unhindered and unfiltered, come to Rainbow Park. Bring a good book, iced latte, and a chair to enjoy the views that only locals seem to know.

Rainbow Park is a rather large park on Alta Lake just North of Whistler. https://www.whistler.ca/rainbow-park There is a decent size parking lot off of Alta Lake Road. A trail system encircles the lake, and there are picnic tables and benches situated here and there. One part of the park has an area designated as a dog beach. There is also a pier here When I visited, a man was throwing a frisbee off the pier and his Golden Retriever was enthusiastically jumping off the end of the pier to chase the frisbee and retrieve it from the lake. The vistas of the surrounding mountains and the way they frame the lake are absolutely beautiful. The water in the lake is very cold and crystal clear.

So we found Backroads, which offers pedal boating, which was the perfect activity. At $110/hour, it's more expensive than taking a kayak or a canoe (which I believe is $99) and doesn't seem as popular (there were only 2-3 pedal boats). We got there on a Friday at around 10:30 in the morning and it seems the most popular option was the kayak. But pedal boating was perfect for us. First, you go to the kiosk and put down a credit card. Then, you head over to a shed to pick up your life jacket, and depending on which boat you're taking, the crew will let you know the instructions and where to go. We took the boat for about an hour, which was enough time for us to go around the lake with some breaks in between. When you're done, you row back to where you launched, return your life jacket, and go close out the bill. Overall, it was kind of pricey but it was a fun experience being out on Lake Alta. Tip - no parking lot. There's only residential street parking, which wasn't plenty but we were still able to nab a spot at that hour. Bathrooms are actual stalled bathrooms and are pretty clean.

It feels not so much a question of if, but when, you'll finally be consumed by them. And then, often by accident, life takes an unexpected turn and you are provided an opportunity to choose to push the eject button (that's been right in front of longer than you realized) and propel yourself into what feels like an alternative universe. A place that allows you to unplug from the breakneck pace of today's society, take a deep breath, and finally linger in the bliss of just being present. No chirping cell phones, no calendar reminders, no bills to receive, no health concerns to ponder, and no need to make plans for the future. An all too brief respite from what emotionally entangles you and seeks to rob you of your peace and your purpose. Without planning it, we fell into such a rabbit hole while floating down the River of Golden Dreams (its actual name). A little rowing (and a lot of just floating) later, we arrived at Green Lake and just allowed the wind to help us drift across glacial waters so green we felt like they can be seen from outer space. We dipped our hands into that water, splashed it around a bit, and pondered just how much time and attention it voluntarily sacrifices to the stresses of today. It whispered its response back to us, "None." So what to do if Green Lake doesn't happen to be in your backyard, and yet an escape is exactly what you need right about now? Good question! We're on this journey right alongside of you, so while we're pursuing our "Green Lake escape", we wish you good fortune in discovering yours! (In keeping with Canadian tradition, we were careful to pack an "Oh Henry!" bar as part of the emergency rations for us and our tour guide Peter.) Rafting was one of only two MUST DO experiences we had planned for our June 2018 mini-Whistler family vacation. Once I saw videos of the Wet & Wild Elaho Exhilarator trip offered by Canadian Outback Rafting I knew we had found our white water rafting trip! The time on the water was GREAT! We had a good flow of water that day, so the rapids were fun and exciting. We had time to play some games (yes, I fell in the water) and even stop and admire nature. My two kids (16 and 20) were a little out of their comfort zone on this one, but after just a few minutes rafting they both took turns riding on the front of the raft! No fear! Our raft guides, Andy and Will, were the best! They were professional and very safety-minded, full of funny stories and always ready to lend a hand or word of encouragement if needed. Made the whole raft feel safe. Will's knowledge of the river was amazing, and Andy had such interesting stories of local culture and legends! In fact, the whole staff at Canadian Outback Rafting were a great group! Fun, full of energy and enthusiasm. I was surprised at all the different backgrounds, what a great group of world travelers. The trip up the mountain in the bus, rough roads and all, while getting to know your fellow rafters was unforgettable. Staff were organized and everything went so smooth from arrival to put-in and take-out. I recommend the photo and GoPro video option, the pics were great and the video captured all our favorite moments. Whole family had a blast, definitely going to return for another adventure!

The panoramic views of the mountains are spectacular and unlike anything else you'll see in the area. It was by far the most challenging and fun adventure we've ever taken! Our guide, Fraser, was phenomenal. Right from the start, he got us fitted into our harnesses and did a thorough, reassuring walkthrough of all the equipment and safety protocols. The journey kicked off with about a one-hour hike through the snow to get to the base of the via ferrata. Fraser was fantastic during this part--meticulously checking the route to ensure the path was completely safe to walk through since the snow was covering a lot of rocks. A few helpful tips for anyone booking: - Take the rental boots! They give you the option to rent hiking boots, and you absolutely should. By the end of the snow hike, the rental shoes and socks were completely soaked. We were incredibly grateful that our own footwear stayed dry for the rest of the day. - The descent is a breeze: After an incredible, adrenaline-pumping climb with breathtaking views, the hike back down to the gondola is on a clear, paved path with zero snow. It's an easy, relaxing way to wind down after a big climb. Highly, highly recommend this experience.

What a great, adventurous activity to soak in the sights and landscape of the surrounding area. After riding the Sea to Sky Gondola to the top (the lift ticket was included in the price of the tour), we met up with our tour guide at a very easy to locate and well-labeled hut. We were greeted warmly and introduced to the small group of others that we'd be climbing with. As newbies to climbing a via ferrata, we appreciated the time our guide took with us to get hooked up with helmets and climbing gear. It was a very hot, very sunny day on our climb but I'm glad I wore leggings as shorts would have been uncomfortable with the belts and loops. Wear decent footwear as there is a lot of climbing to do on this adventure. Our tour started with a short hike downhill to the start of the climbing route. Along the way, we learned a bit of history about the area as well as the local flora. At the start of our climb, we learned the proper way to clip in and traverse the lines, laddered rungs, and bridges. There were plenty of breaks built in and a lot of guidance and directions so we could comfortably work our way up the rocky face of the mountain. The views of Squamish Harbour and the neighboring snowy peaks were awe-inspiring, albeit a bit nerve-wracking to take in at times. For most of the trip you're facing the mountainside so it's easy to forget just how far up you've climbed and the sweeping views behind you. At one point though, we sat on a small bridge facing out and WOWSAH! Took about an hour and a half to make our way through the series of fixed cables. Our guide snapped photos of us through which was much appreciated as I didn't have the right gear on my vacation to keep my phone out for my own photos without fear of dropping it. We received the pictures from the guide right at the end of the trip directly to our cell phones so we left with those in tow. A thrilling tour and first experience on a via ferrata. So grateful for the patience, focus on safety (and fun!), and laid back atmosphere during our time on the rock face. Thank you Mountain Skills Academy and Adventures!
