My wife and I took the CCP course with James. Prior to the class, I had very limited experience with firearms. My wife had no experience, was ambivalent about carrying a gun (either her or me), and hesitant about handling firearms. After the course, we both feel safe with firearms and comfortable enough to go to the range and shoot on our own. James completely changed my wife's view on carrying a firearm, and we both feel empowered by the situational awareness techniques that James taught us. The course was transformative. James is a superb teacher. He is patient, enthusiastic, methodical, and thorough. He has extensive real life experience behind what he is teaching, and he presents the information well. The class was just him and us, so we were able to ask questions without feeling on the spot. Given my wife's hesitation about guns, I was worried she would have a bad or stressful experience and her ambivalence would turn to fear. It turned out that the opposite happened: James' instruction gave her confidence and made her feel safe. On the range, James' methods and coaching had both of us shooting safely, comfortably, and reasonably well (ok, we could both hit the target) right away. We had a great time. The course itself was 4 hours of class and 2 hours of range time. The information in class went well beyond what you need for a concealed carry permit in Utah. We learned safe and responsible gun handling, laws regarding concealed carry, and situational awareness techniques. The situational awareness methods are empowering. They could keep me from needing to use a firearm to protect myself or family. But, as I learned, it is better to have protection and not need it than to need protection and not have it. Class also included practicing safe gun handling with model firearms before going to to the range for the real thing. We'll definitely be going to James when we are ready to choose our own firearms, and when we are ready for more training. If you have no experience or are just starting out, James will get you to a relatively high level right away. Even if you are more experienced, James is such an effective teacher and has such a depth of real-world knowledge that you would proably learn a lot from a course with Rain6. read more

I had the opportunity to do a 3 day course with them back in the spring. Some friends that live in the SLC area recommended them so I flew up to train with Rain6 and it was the best thing I could have done. I had just purchased a new pistol and AR a few weeks prior to the training and had maybe a 100 rounds between the 2 firearms and barely knew how to use them. I grew up shooting cans and small game with bolt action rifles and thought I knew firearms well enough, but I was so wrong. After 3 days of one-on-one training with them, I was running down range while shooting, hitting targets accurately, re-loading on the fly and transitioning in between weapons. It still blows my mind the things I learned in 3 days working with them. I am now very confident in using my firearms and have a detailed understanding of how the firearms operate, have a strong respect for gun safety and am now able to teach friends of mine that are wanting to learn how to use firearms safely. They were very patient and methodical in their teaching and tailored my training to take me from a beginner shooter to a proficient and confident marksman with a solid understanding of tactical maneuvers. The other thing that really stands out about working with the guys over at Rain6 is that they have real world experience in both the military and private security sector. These guys really not only know their stuff, they've lived it and can draw from that experience with real world examples while teaching. I can't recommend them enough. This review is for the CFP course. James is a knowledgeable and great instructor, he knows how to present the material very well. I enjoyed every minute in that classroom, learning about firearm safety, rules, laws, and such. Not one moment did I ever feel bored or wanting to leave, just the way James presented made it very fun, wish all my college courses were like this haha. As for future me, I will definitely plan on taking additional lessons from Rain6. I like their philosophy on firearms safety and handling, and just the overall atmosphere there is great. I If you are in need of a CFP, I HIGHLY recommend you take it through Rain6, you will get your money's worth, I guarantee it. *note* I wrote this review a couple months ago and this still holds true to this day. *update 11-11-15* Since my CFP course, I have purchased my very first firearm, strike 1, from James. I have taken 3 pistol handling classes from beginning to intermediate levels. The classes are excellent, James is really patient and very clear with his explanations. This is from a guy who has never touched or fired a gun ever in his life, after those classes I was not afraid of going near a gun anymore. My views and stance on firearms has changed for the better and I am very grateful that I met James in the first place and didn't go to another place. I went to Rain6 since I was looking into purchasing my first pistol. I did not end up with a gun, yet, but what I did get was a fantastic learning experience. I ended up taking the "Intro to Pistol" class with my girlfriend who has never shot anything in her life, even a BB gun. The experience could not have been better for either of us. I have limited shooting experience (Boy Scouts and a few rental ranges) and I learned so much from the class. I decided to take the class for both of us since my decision to purchase a firearm would affect the person living with me. My girlfriend feels much more confident with gun safety and knowledge now that she has that class under her belt. James and his other instructor for the day, Ozzy, were great. They were both patient and helpful while always maintaining safety as the top priority which is very important to me and should be for anyone around any gun. The class started at 11am and went until about 3:30pm, with some drive time to the range but for the price it was very well worth it. The classroom style learning helped my us both gain confidence in handling a gun and learning the motions which transferred right to the actual range. If you are looking to learn a lot or know someone who is hesitant or scared of handling a pistol then consider this course or any of Rain6's classes. I am glad I did. read more

These guys are the best at Rain6. The classes are great and they know their stuff. They are patient and methodical with their teaching and helped me to learn so much in the classes I had with them and great one on one teaching. This is the place to go and get training with firearms and with their real world experiences it makes them the place to go. The classes are really great the instructors are great they make the class time is awesome and help you learn so much and take the time to answer questions. The shooting part was great giving great advice and instruction to learn how to be better at shooting. Going to Rain6 was the best thing that I could have done. Came up to Utah from Idaho on a holiday weekend and was hoping to stop by and get my hands on a Strike One Pistol. I called to see if they were open that weekend. Turns out they were going to be closed when I was headed back to Idaho. But after talking to James for a few minutes he said that he would open the store just for me. I showed up and he was a man of his word. He treated me as a customer, just like he would want to be treated. Even introduced me to his family who came down to the shop with him. So when that strike one compact comes out I'm going to make a special trip up to Utah and give him my business even if there is a place closer to me. Not only did James give me an amazing hands-on instruction, but he completely turned me around as a shooter. I have confidence behind the rifle that I never had before. I learned the proper shooting stance, I learned how to BZO, I learned parts of my rifle and how they all come together. I took the Beginning Pistol class from Ozzie. The classroom instruction was excellent and easy to understand. At the firing range Ozzie had reserved a private lane.
