This is a bit of a Catch-22 because to receive or learn about these various services, your MD is the one to inform you or refer you, and the MD's are on tight leashes with only 15 minutes allowed per patient (which is actually better than a lot of medical clinics). The staff all seem skillful, competent, sincere and dedicated, and the nurses are stellar. But like with many organizations of various kinds, there seem to be communication snags that end up negatively affecfing patient care over time. I cheerfully rolled with these imperfections, until after a couple of years, it kind of hit a critical mass, in my experience and my opinion. As an old and tired community activist, I've started giving feedback on these things, so far to mixed reception. I would love to see them get up to a 4 rating. The interim medical director (who is moving to another clinic mid-November) has seemed very interested in making improvements, and another bright light is that they have a new program manager who has at least expressed a desire to improve patient experience. They seem to be making at least some improvements organizationally and to the physical premises. There is now a large board in the waiting room with information pamphlets and forms to give feedback. They have also been undergoing some remodeling inside the clinic. (Photos of these follow.) What's also true for me, at least, is that I spent years afraid of doctors and medicine, and my MD, Dr. Magnuson, could not have been more perfect in getting me through that! Also the folks at the front desk are very friendly, very helpful, and bilingual English-Spanish.

I tried Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) to deaden the nerves in my knees - and it worked for me. Dr. Merz-Herrala is everything we want in a doctor, he was caring, listened and very detail oriented. Dr. M made certain that I felt no pain during the test shots and then the RFA treatment, and the two attending nurses were also really nice and efficient. Both Dr. M and the prep nurse fully explained everything in advance. The pain is reduced substantially (80-90%) and I sometimes forget that I had a problem. The Center is state of the art, the care is outstanding - well worth looking into this treatment and my amazing doctor!

Dr. Prasad Shirvalkar is wondrous and gifted. By the time I ended up here, through a maze of other…read moreproviders, I was desperate. He's approachable and personable, super easy to talk to, with boundless energy. Every five appointments I've had with him: new patient, infusion, video visit, in-office follow-up, procedure ... all of densely packed and helpful, clear strategy with rationale for treatment that makes sense. I love that he never phones it in, always engaged, laser-focused, never rushes, not distracted, takes the time to answer questions. He listens attentively and is remarkably responsive to nuance. Before my first appt., though hopeful and excited, I was apprehensive that I might have to waste my time listening to a hundred suggestions, all of which, over decades, I've already done. I was blown away by the new hypotheses and approaches Dr. Shirvalkar came up with. I'm a 'glass-full person' and his optimism further buoyed me. He's knowledgeable and seasoned, knows his domain. When I went in for my cervical facet joint injections, I loved his skillful precise and deft technique--pinpointed in target, smooth and seamless... everything you'd want when needles are involved :-) He does not think cookie-cutter, not follow a prescribed flow chart. From the first appointment, he grokked the complexity of my case, that I've been around the block and needed a no-nonsense approach of targeted treatment. I immediately sensed that he "got" it, the extent of my chronicity and severity, that I'd been managing for a long time. He never invalidated or minimized what I was reporting. Though this might sound like "duh," and you might assume a provider wouldn't do this, I've experienced over and over again a type of invalidating. Dr. Shirvalkar does the opposite: he validates my subjective experience and is focused on finding a solution, on helping my symptoms, on easing the level of pain. He exudes a sense of caring and sincerely wanting my pain to be better; he genuinely puts in the time and hard work of thinking through the problem to come up with multiple possible solutions. He conveys them clearly, e.g. "We've done A., and if this last., we'll do A. Again. If A doesn't last, we'll do B., If not B., ... " This simple 'If then else' structure is crucial, because it injects me with hope. I live on hope. It's my food and water. This is priceless and he gives it not as mere communique, but as part of the treatment itself. He has cognitive openness that does not lend itself to bias, e.g. though I came in with a diagnosis emphasizing "X," he did not stay within these bounds of "X," and looked beyond. It's outside of this sphere, that we found another possibility: "Y," leading to another set of treatments, which has given me some relief. Dr. Jessica Marrone, the fellow who did a portion of my procedure, was solid and I loved how she came in beforehand to explain a distinction between nerves I didn't understand. Gabriel, Dr. Shirvalkar's assistant, is conscientious with follow through, kind and empathetic in telephone interactions. I feel so lucky to have access to this place and their services. This UCSF Center for Pain Medicine, access to a wealth of assessment, interventions ... all of it is bomb.

Since I'm adding (and pioneering) this facility into Yelp Land, I'll start by clarifying how the (add in dirty word of your choice) so that you don't end up hobbling across the entire campus in pain like yours truly was. The UCSF Cancer Center Radiology Dept is located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus in the Precision Cancer Bldg, which happens to share an entrance with the Gateway Medical Bldg. Furthermore, these 2 buildings are connected by a very, very, very, very long hallway with nothing but windows and doors weaving it's way from one building to another. If you're like me, and have a hard time walking, definitely heed this warning. It had me so exhausted and achy that I even screwed up the name when I submitted the place to Yelp just now. Whatever - it's clear now... Every medical staff I encountered were friendly, gentle, and nice to conversation with. Ive had X-rays and labs done so far and I'm getting ready to go back in for a couple of MRIs. If the wait time for the MRIs mirrors that of the X-ray and Adult Lab Depts, then there shouldn't be much wait. Definitely would consider using the facilities on Mission Bay Campus in the future

First time going through Mammogram & Ultra sound experience (only second time getting a mammogram ever in my life). The intake nurse was cold, rude & gave minimal instructions on gowning, lockers & waiting room. I told her it was my first time going through these procedures and her response as if I was horribly bothering her asking for help & compassion. Scoffed and walked off. When she did my mammogram testing she was uncompassionate & shoved my breast in the machine. Then directed the machine harder on them for a scan with little warning. I cried silently, praying to get through the scans and go home. After 3 scans she was surprised that I was crying and upset when she directed me to leave the room immediately. Second woman for ultra sounds was a slightly nicer but only after I lost it a little asking if I should be concerned about all the tests and asked what I was even doing there + where the bathroom was (because no one ever told me). By this point I'd waited over 45 minutes & watched as other patients came in with more care & kindness from other medical staff than I had. After the ultra sound, next thing I knew a male doctor was sitting next to me while I'm still laying on the table under a sheet explaining a surgery that he recommended over something that has little to no risk. I didn't know who this doctor was, nor had I met him or got any real introduction. I always choose female doctors for these kinds of exams, so I was not comfortable and just wanted to go home, but no. Then I had to meet with 2 more nurses that dumped even more verbal information about insurance & scheduling. Since my insurance hadn't approved next steps I was finally ok'd to go leave. I'm still waiting for my online chart to update to understand what was found & if it's even required or for UCSF's testing studies or something else (because as you guessed it - no one wrote down for me what was found in MY body). Needless to say, I will be seeking another opinion and searching for medical staff with compassion & care towards their female patients.

However, I did end up pressing options to speak to an advice nurse, and she was great about getting back to me, even setting up my appointment. The advice nurse is Pat, and she was so helpful on the phone and in person. She ended up dropping in when I was about to get my 4, that's right 4 pricks, immunizations. She talked to me and advised me to breathe. May was doing the injections, and she was nice too. Being in medical facilities isn't a pleasant experience for me; I actually avoided getting any kind of health care for 9 years. So it helps a great deal when people are nice and informative. Pat really went out of her way to be helpful and kind; I really appreciate that. Shots aren't fun, but the company during them can make a world of difference with how painful the experience can be...yeah, it hurt, but it was very easy to get over it. So yay for me getting immunizations over with, and yay for Silver Ave. Health Center for offering great service.

When I was able to reference specific medical research, including the flaws in the study that spread the fear of treating perimenopause, she referred me to a gynecologist. The gyno told me that because I still have periods and ovaries I'm producing hormones, therefore she can't prescribe me any hormone treatment, but that she can prescribe me birth control. BC *is* hormones. She didn't seem to believe me that I was definitely not pregnant, yet didn't ask for a pregnancy test. I joked that the only way that would happen is if 15 year old zombie sperm might still be present and viable. She looked even more suspicious at this point, then made certain to classify my sexual orientation so she could put it in my file. I also saw an ENT there who didn't listen to my concerns at all. I went in because food goes up the back of my nose when I swallow, sometimes I have trouble swallowing, and my nostril collapses shut when I lie down. He scoped my nose, prescribed me a nasal spray for allergies and told me he wasn't concerned about the other problems. Maybe I should have eaten before I went so he'd find some food. Or just not blown out all the cereal before I went. Awful place. I forgot what it was like to be spoken to as if you're stupid by your health care providers and having to DIY your health care. Nobody should have to do this. Now I remember. I'm counting the days until I can get back to my old job and health insurance so I can go back to being treated like I have an IQ over zero. Also, the portal keeps notifying me of new lab results. I only had one blood draw and they're the same results over and over, but rearranged each time. At least this is just annoying rather than genuinely concerning.
