My family and I came to this church yesterday for their Easter Service. I really appreciated them…read morehaving a service on Saturday because you could come to church and not worry about the large group of people that normally goes to the Sunday Easter service. My sisters are members here, and they love it.
The atmosphere is very casual which is something I enjoy. Most of the attendants were wearing jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers.
We were greeted by the ushers at the outer and inner doors. The ushers made sure to tell me they had a Children's church and that my kids were welcomed there. It was the first time we had been to this church, so I declined and had them sit with me. We found seats in the middle, and the rest of my family joined us 5 minutes after.
The service began with the Young Adults Choir and they sang two songs. The words were posted on two huge TV screens that flank the alter. Afterwards, the Mimes took the stage. Now, when I was younger and went to church (infrequently...) we didn't have such things. I LOVED it. It was dramatic, filled with emotion, and sincere. I actually cried towards the end of it. The pastor, Kerwin B. Lee, began to tell us of several of the services they offer at Berean. There was legal counsel, and a host of prayer services. Each service focused on a subject, like childcare workers, childhood obesity, day cares, etc. The Young Adult Choir took the stage again and sung a couple of songs. By this time, everyone was feeling the goodness that comes with a good service.
The pastor returned and began his sermon. He began almost every point by mentioning a member's name (Now Nancy, what Jesus meant was...). I thought that was neat. He even made a couple of rap references. That just tickled me. He kept the sermon short, which was awesome. After the sermon, you are invited to give your offering and/or tithes, and he invites those who haven't already to join his church. After this, he dismisses the congregation. All in all, it lasted about an hour and a half.
I enjoyed my visit at Berean, and am considering at least going to church on the regular. The fact that they offer so many services(SAT/ACT prep, Food Pantry, Before/After school care) speaks to their reach in the community. If you're looking for a church home, consider Berean.
