He retired last year and I went somewhere else for a few appointments and I wasn't listened to at all and lots of changes were being made and the focus was not on my mental health during my appointments. I called KOA to see if I could see new psychiatrist. I got in fairly quickly and again, I am listened to and being dealt with as a person, with the focus on my mental health. It is such a relief to know that I have someone I trust. I have looked in to some of their group therapy offers from the therapists, but so far they haven't worked with my college and work schedule. Hopefully some day they will because they sound helpful.

Then when I asked for grievance paperwork, she refused to give me that or the patient advocate number. I left the hospital feeling worse leaving than I did coming in. PSJ inpatient is so disrespectful and unprofessional and is so far from being a safe place where a struggling individual can go for help. Worst psych care I have ever experienced in my entire life. Also when I asked a male staff member to leave me alone in order for me to cope and calm down, he would not stop screaming at me. I have been in a jail cell on a mental health hold in SD and I would say that even jail cell was way better than this hospital.

I was told it was good time to practice coping skills. I found out through my foster dad why I was really on unit. The blood draw sucks they didn't do it right I bruised so badly. My doctor was just nasty as well and so was the therapist. I would NOT recommend going here. I only got worse.

While things started out great, I loved the first provider I saw. When she retired, I saw a newly graduated clinician. She seemed like she was very smart and knew what she was doing, so I felt we were left in good hands. This clinician diagnosed my 11 year old daughter as bipolar and instantly put her on meds. Every time we went in for a visit, more meds were being thrown at her. I didn't know any better at the time. I thought it's what she needed. After my daughter turned 14 and had some other issues, mental health related, said clinician told her she was going to call the cops on her because she wasn't going to school. The clinician was very aware that she was in a wheelchair and we were trying to work things out with the school. We had to continue to deal with this BS for another 2 years until I got a new job with different insurance. The day I was hired, I made new appointments at Essentia and haven't looked back.

She takes her time during our appointments, not rushing me through, and I leave feeling heard and validated after our visits. I love that convenient virtual and in-person options at her beautiful office are available. There is initial paperwork to complete before a first visit - but that is very standard for visiting a medical professional, especially for such a professional office that works with insurance, government regulations, and wants to provide the best, individualized care for their patients. I've visited a few providers before finding Dr. Ami and she is a great fit for me, and one I hope to work with for a long time!
