I visited Raag when it first opened up and was excited by the idea of an upscale Indian fusion restaurant. While they did a good job with the ambiance and decor, when it came to the food, they really missed. While most of the dishes were fair nothing stood out. And when we ordered the lamb chops, they were under cooked. Haven't been there since. Granted they had recently opened and may be going through initial obstacles, I was expecting better. I have heard good things since and I might give it another try. If I do and have a better experience, will update this review. read more

I had a repeat visit last month and the experience was extremely compelling with small really good improvements on the menu. Fantastic food overall as before and had a great time with a small group. Fusion drinks left quite an impression as well traditional Indian taste very nicely done. Service was quite improved since my past visit in 2023 and noticeable. Raag overall pleasantly surprised the group I came with even the Minneapolis locals who were discovering Raag for the first time and made a great impression. Appetizers like haryali tikki, jal tarang(golgappe), scallops, blackened chicken were very liked. Main course popular on our table included paneer tomatillo, butter chicken, fig kofta and a fantastic well done Daal malhar. I am a vegetarian and Raag remains my favorite go to Indian restaurant in Minneapolis. 5* and highly recommend. This fine dining Indian cuisine has been on my list to try for quite sometime . I would recommend making a reservation before arriving . The service was a little slow , but once things got started , the server was very helpful with recommendations and suggestions. They start you out with a beautiful dish that creates smoke, and this is supposed to "awaken your senses " I tried the Peru Blush, which is one of their signature cocktails . This drink had Vodka, Guava Juice, Ginger Ale, Lime Juice, Angostura Bitters, Curry Leaves. Wow, im still thinking about this drink, because it was so so different . The first sip tastes like egg and then fades in to a light fruit flavor . This drink will not be for everyone , but I really liked it . We started with the tandoor grilled scallops . The presentation is beautiful . I am a huge fan of scallops and these were good but not my favorite . I wish the scallops were a little crisp on the edges . There is a nice citrus flavor , I feel the watermelon caviar gets lost , but the sauce is a treat . Four our main dish we did the butter chicken which is listed as a "sharing main." If we didn't have a starter, and bread I feel like sharing this dish would not be suitable for more than one . On another note probably the best butter chicken I have had . We got the "spicy " for spice level, if you can't handle spice definitely pick a different option . The sauce was a beautiful color and the spice was perfect for me , the chicken was very tender and delicious , and the rice was very light and cooked to perfection. The wild mushroom and truffle stuffed naan was a SHOW STOPPER . Perfection . My mouth is watering talking about it . 100 percent get this . For dessert we had Shahi Tukda (Royal Bite) New Dish: Reinvented Royal dessert of kings, fried bread is topped with cream, saffron, reduced milk & nuts. For a dessert it wasn't too sweet and fried bread was done so well . If you like a sweet dessert this isn't for you . The cream I could put on top of any sweet treat, it was a delight . Went here for dinner with my parents. We got a bunch of small plates and a couple cocktails. We shared everything. The food was quite good, everything made fresh. The environment was very hip with blue vibes everywhere. The portion sizes were a bit small considering what you paid but overall it was very tasty. The service was attentive as well. read more

Last night's dinner was as good as the first time we were here. We decided to try different things on the menu this time. We had the pappad basket for appetizer which came with 4 different sauces. Each sauce was so different it gave us a whole different experience with each bite. For entree we decided to get the bread basket, Chicken Korma and Vegetable Korma. Both the curries were good but we both agreed the Korma was a little better. For dessert we got Mango Kulfi. It had just the right amount of sweetness, fluffy and light, felt like it was the perfect ending to the meal. We love coming here because it's not the traditional Indian food that we are used to. Went a few weeks ago, right before they closed the kitchen. They were SO accommodating and friendly. Atmosphere was trendy. The food was amazing. We had the truffle oil chicken tikka to start - highly recommend. For mains we had the chicken stew and the lamb stew with naan and the basmati rice that came with the dishes. Both were delicious. We asked for medium spicy and it was actually a medium spicy (not Minnesota scale) - the chicken a little more than the lamb. Host very friendly greeting. That was the high point of the evening. The menu itself is interesting. However, every question we asked the waitress, she was unable to answer. I asked how spicy my meal choice was and she said not very and I ordered it at spice level 1. It was extremely spicy. I could eat little of it. Only after we were almost finished did she come over to ask how it was and offered a replacement. Because it was so late, I declined. When the reservation was made it was a mentioned that his was a special occasion and reminded waitress when we were seated. There was no follow-up. Two of our party ordered the same dish but with different spice levels. When served, no distinction was made. Don't know who recieved the spicer one. read more

After months of having this place on my list, I finally got the chance to try it on a date night this weekend! As a south Asian myself, I was excited to try a new Indian restaurant. I want to preface this review saying I went into the experience knowing that the Indian food is not traditional (hence the word "Progressive" in the name) and that it would be more catered to a low-spice level palate. Keeping the above in mind, I was excited to try a fusion Indian restaurant with beautiful presentation. It did not disappoint! Due to covid times, we decided to eat out at the beautiful patio. The tables were spaced apart and at dinner time it's covered in the building's shade so you don't get blaring sun in your face. A plus. We originally came for Restaurant week, but ended up going with the regular menu for more options. First thing that our server brought over was an appetizer of papads/crisps and various dips, which we started digging into immediately as we were hungry. It was delicious! I originally thought that this appetizer is one that comes to all tables complimentary. However, once we were over half way done with the crisps, the server came over and asked if we had ordered the appetizer. We said no, stating we thought it came complimentary. He said "okay, no worries." Turned out a table at the total opposite end of the patio had ordered this appetizer and it wasn't meant for us. Oops. Luckily, we were not charged extra for it. The chicken tikka lababdar (butter chicken) was really good! Not quite as sweet tasting as traditional butter chicken but still delicious. The gosht kundan kaliyan was really good too - my husband described the curry part as similar to "paan" from South Asia. Most likely similar spices were used. It was slightly sour but creamy. I liked it! The star of the menu was the gulab jamun creme brulee. I've made creme brulee before and it's no easy task. I'm impressed that they were able to have gulab jamun in the dish without making the custard watery. It was delicious! The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars was the lack of communication with the appetizer arrival. Otherwise, room for improvement and would definitely try more. read more

Recently took a guest to their special Independence Day brunch buffet and we all were extremely pleased with the interesting variety and quality of everything . Raag is a fancy, mostly North Indian restaurant serving "progressive Indian" cuisine, whatever that means. It has a couple labeled vegan options but the food is underwhelming. I've been to Raag twice and was unimpressed both times. The street style Delhi samosas ($8 for 2) are fine but nothing special. The chutney glazed potatoes ($14) are vegan by default and not terribly well-executed. The flavors are sour and sticky with a mushy potato bite (despite the menu saying the dish would be crispy). The tofu kedegree ($18) is one of only 2 labeled vegan main dishes and not particularly good. I've learned a lesson the hard way over many years: Indian restaurants don't know how to cook tofu. I say this as a piece of tough love, as an Indian myself, and a longtime vegan who has eaten a lot of great tofu elsewhere. This dish was a couple bites of lightly-sauteed tofu sitting on top of 1 pound of rice, with a moat of decent-tasting curry. But the dish doesn't come together and consists almost entirely of empty carbohydrates. The Tandoor plain roti ($5) is one of two vegan breads (the other being a multi-grain roti) and perfectly fine but not different than what you'd get at an Indian restaurant in a stripmall in the suburbs. I did like my cocktail, though. And the live music was nice. Given the lack of vegan options and the mixed quality of the food, I can't recommend Raag highly. If you want better North Indian food, go to Hyderabad Grill in Bloomington. If you want more delicate and unusual flavors, go to Gorkha Palace in Northeast Minneapolis (it's a Nepalese restaurant, but has similar ingredients to North Indian food). read more

I was suggested to try this restaurant at the behest of another Yelp user, as part of my exploration of the Twin Cities Indian food scene. I had been putting it off due to the menu having prices that are a little high for my budget, waiting for a special occasion to present itself to justify the indulgence of dining at such an opulent establishment. Eventually my birthday came around, so I took the jump and booked a table for myself and my girlfriend. After finally dining at Raag, I can't help but feel a little deflated, like the bread lid on my biryani after it cooled down. I feel like I have to give full disclosure when discussing my experience, that I was not in a good mood during my birthday dinner. Perhaps we had already been too excessive with the amount of food and drink consumed that day, but the aura at my table was not at all celebratory but in fact quite tense. I shall try my best not to let this cloud my objective experience at Raag, however. The restaurant is bright and modern, and it had a lovely hearth in which a fire was burning. It wasn't quite fancy in the way I expected, but it was nicer than your average Indian restaurant. The servers were polite. Unfortunately the vibe at my table was not improved by the food. As an appetizer, we had the jal tarang, which I suppose is the restaurant's name for panipuri. The hollow crisps are filled with a mixture of vegetables and grains and served atop shot glasses of flavored water, which is to be poured into the crisp and eaten in one mouthful. I usually love the burst of flavor and texture you get from panipuri, hence why I ordered it, but I really didn't like this version. The crisps were much too large, and I almost choked twice on them due to there being so much liquid in each one. The liquid was very sweet, like grape kool-aid. When I have had panipuri in the past, the liquid was more complexly flavored and not so cloyingly sweet, and the smaller size of each panipuri was more manageable in the mouth and less of a choking hazard. I felt a bit unwell after starting the meal with this. For the main course we ordered two curries, the vegetable and fig kofta and butter chicken, as well as the chicken biryani. The presentation was very beautiful, with care taken to the placement of each ingredient in the dish. The vegetable and fig kofta wasn't as delicious as it looked, however, tasting a bit sour, almost like Campbell's tomato soup. The butter chicken was solid, but frankly no better than any other Indian restaurant where it costs half the price. The chicken biryani was ultimately my favorite dish, served in a pot that had a layer of flatbread baked onto the top of it, like an inflated lid. It was tasty, but perhaps a little more one-note than the biryani I had at Godavari in Eden Prairie, for example. I could probably warrant four stars for this restaurant if it weren't so expensive. I feel I was misled by the high pricing (and that Yelper who suggested it, damn you!) to believe I would have a very luxurious meal at Raag. If you can see past the pretty plating, you might feel the same way. In the end, the food at Raag was just not exceptional enough to make me forget my joyless birthday dinner. With this sad memory in mind, I will likely not return. read more

This is Indian fine dining, everything was beautifully plated in artisan made dinnerware, with lovely sauces, edible flowers and stellar service. There are beautiful murals on the wall and a glass vase of dry ice is brought to your table when you arrive to set the mood. We tried a course from each portion of the menu starting with a non alcoholic drink called jungle juice of banana, ginger and icy orange juice. This drink was presented with edible flowers and was the perfect blend of refreshing fruit with a subtle ginger kick. We then snacked on the papads which were four different gluten-free cracker breads with four sauces, two slightly sweet with mango in one and tamarind ( I think) in the other, plus a yogurt sauce and a spicy sauce. These were excellent. For an appetizer we had the scallops which were artfully presented in natural shells with a mild spiced sauce and grilled lemon. These were good, but not a knock out. For main dishes we had the tandoori stuffed chicken which was very unique, a bit like a chicken sausage stuffed into chicken breast then grilled in the tandoor, this was very good and the roasted new potatoes that came with it were excellent and had a slight sweetness to them from tamarind. The chicken dish was garnished with red onion, greens and mild mint dip. I had this with rice instead of naan bread to make it gluten free. We also shared a curry of cauliflower, peas and potatoes which was my favorite, even though it was one of the simplest dishes of the evening. My husband had the weekend special of lamb shank which was in an excellent moderately spicy and complex flavored sauce. He had the mushroom stuffed naan on the side, which he really enjoyed. We boxed up about a third of our meal so that we had room for the mango kulfi mousse which came with crushed almonds, dots of meringue and a fruity caramel, this was excellent and very light. Give this restaurant a try for a unique take on Indian cuisine. If I still lived in Minneapolis I would be here once a month to try out all the dishes! read more

A dinner experience to be remembered There doesn't seem to be a strict dress code but the vibes are a little fancier than a usual Indian restaurant. They start with setting a bowl of dry ice?/spices on your table for a cool effect. My friend and I ended up switching plans after walking by Raag. We were immediately greeted at the front door and sat. Our server was extremely attentive and asked thoughtful questions when making menu suggestions. He asked about what spice level we wanted and what types of proteins we preferred. Looking at other pictures of the blackened chicken on Yelp made me nervous, as this was definitely outside of my comfort zone, but I am so happy that it was suggested by our server. since its inception Raag has always presented their food well. unfortunately thats where it stops. prices at Raag are typical of the 50th and France restaurants. always pay a little more than other parts of the twin cities. portion sizes could certainly get a boost as well. when Raag started i was a frequent diner and loved their variety of foods which were different from the other northern indian cuisine. my wife and i dined there today. ordered a tikka naan pizza. well the pizza had no flavor. the chicken was dried and void of usual tikka flavors. plus the cheese had a flavor that overlapped the rest. when i requested a " hot" sauce they brought it with our 2nd dish. our 2nd dish was the whole baked cauliflower for $20.00 the flavor was ok but the cauliflower was well over cooked and mushy. our server was nice and friendly but often referred to her hand held chart to show pictures of the final dish. i hope the management takes more time to train their servers. the competition in this area is high so hope they can turn their quality up. and if you're Looking for ambience there are other Indian restaurants in Edina to try. read more

I'll be honest... I thought this was going to be just a glorified Applebee's-like experience. I was SO WRONG. We made reservations and were texted asap. Raag asked if they could prepare anything special for us. I said "top shelf tequilla with lime when we sit down." I was half thinking they would forget (like everyone else I request this from). We get there a little early and Mr. Bruce (GM) had a corner table waiting for us. After we were seated, a server asked for ice or no ice in the water. Love it. Right after she left, the bartender brought us the tequilla. WIN. He told us about the tequilla, was genuinely excited to see us and learn about why we picked Raag, and told us about his other tequillas he'd recommend. What a champ. We look through the menu, placed our drink order and Mr. Bruce comes back to take our order. The only downside to a place like this is that it's not easy to understand *what* all the food is. So we asked Mr. Bruce, "what do you recommend?" He said, "do you trust me?" Anyone who says that to my wife goes STRAIGHT to her heart. Yessir we do. We got lamb, shrimp, and chicken. It was perfect! Let's just start with a WOW. This location is beautiful, the decor, the art, the cutlery everything is gorgeous. The owner is so kind along with all of the other staff, it's very refreshing. Anc the food - let's give it a double wow. The way the food is plated is perfection and the taste is even better. The best samosas I've ever had with a creamy sauce that blended so perfectly with the flavors of the lamb. The ribs fell right off the bone - so good. Looking at the reviews I didn't know what to expect. As someone of Indian heritage, I couldn't tell if it would be another well plated, overhyped place, but I was sooo pleasantly surprised. It was genuinely very good, and I loved the twists on traditional dishes. DRINKS: Raag has an EXTENSIVE menu. We got the asian superstar, Peru blush, regular margarita, and mango lassi. All the alcoholic drinks were very good and I definitely want to go back during happy hour time to try more of the menu. The drinks are on the stronger side though (which tbh I didn't mind because it wasn't obnoxious in taste). FOOD: smaller size for portions (compared to typical Indian food) but I think you can definitely make it family style. We had 2 servings of samosas, and 2 main dishes (fig kofta and palak paneer). The filling for the samosas were amazing. Tasted very traditional but delicious. The yogurt chutney they gave with was probably the best thing I've had. I loved the fig kofta, the sweet with spicy was such a good combo and a fun take on a classic. The palak paneer was also very good and paneer was nice and soft. We got medium spice level thinking it was like a western spice levels but some of the food was actually really hot. Still good. Deff would go back. AMBIANCE: has a fancier but fun feel. Seems pretty energetic in there and kind of like you're somewhere else besides 50th and France. Loved the vibes. SERVICE: I looooved the service here. They were so nice and helpful. Gave lots of advice when we asked for some top veg dishes. The manager also came over and talked to us and ask about the food, as well as talk to my parents about india. Visited 3/3/23. It was my sister and I's first time at Raag and we had an awesome experience! Parking was fairly easy, we chose one of the free 50th and France lots and walked over. The whole place has a cool modern feel to it and we were slightly entranced when a center piece with dry ice was brought to our table prior to ordering. Both of us got wine and they had great selections for it-some of the best wine I've had in a while. After asking for a few suggestions from our server (who had some stellar recommendations), I went for the Delhi butter chicken and my sister selected the stir fried cauliflower and peas. We also split the mushroom truffle naan. We were provided bowls of basmati rice with these which we were grateful for and by the end of our meal both of us were completely full. Everything was very good with a great balance of flavors and a variety of choices across the menu. We've already discussed visiting again. While the prices are a bit on the spendier side in comparison to some Indian restaurants, you truly pay for the experience and for guaranteed good eats. Would recommend. read more

Raag was absolutely incredible! I loved this food experience. The presentation made everything so much fun! The Jal Tarang was an interactive amusement to start off with, and the Neel Gagan drink was just as good as it looked. The blackened chicken tandoori was cooked so well and the meat was flavorful. The Cauliflower fritters were delicious and the sauce was a great pairing. At this point, I had gotten the Kerala Spice Trail drink and I loved this one because the smoke in the cover was cinnamon-infused! I'm a sucker for details so I loved this addition to the drink. The Palak Paneer was also so good and light despite it being a creamy texture! Made for amazing leftovers. The garlic naan is an absolute must! Highly recommend this spot! Dosas , sambhar and chutneys were amazing. The Schezuan indo-chinese dosa was too oily and spicy and it upset my stomach. The Ghee Podi and Potato Masala were good but my favorite was ghee podi. They only serve dosas on weekends. Nice ambiance and great service. read more

The Gucci edamame curry dazzled me as it was vegan but equally delicious. Never had I experienced a vegan curry so creamy n flavorful.
