The options seem to change daily and are very fresh. There will always usually be a chicken, ground beef or vegetarian option. The waitress was not at all friendly. It was quite obvious that she'd rather have a short of break at this time than serve us. I even had to reason with her why I would like to have some more chili sauce. The food wasn't really a highlight either. The soup was luke warm at best and tested boring. For a national dish I'd expected a bit more. As a starter I tried frog legs which weren't impressive either. They were totally over-seasoned and chewy. The 3 stars are for the Mango Curry my wife had, that was actually very tasty. The only plus for this place.

Food was tasty and arrived soon after the order was placed…read more Service from the attending server was quite friendly but not very attentive, probably because of the location of the table I was sitting at - tucked away in a corner at the end of the main counter. There was another table there as well, slightly more in the open that also seemed to get less attention. They were not that busy and on one occasion I had to seek out the waitress who was just chatting with two others. Older woman at the counter as you walk into the restaurant did not seem pleasant. Ambience is inconsequential. This is a restaurant stuck in the corner of a building that is on a corner of a street, with a couple tables outside on the sidewalk. There is no Vietnamese decor (or any other decor for that matter) so ambience was not a consideration in this place. Based on the food alone I would recommend this establishment - nothing else.

The…read moresweet Thai chili sauce accompanying it was straight out of the bottle, but tasted better when tweaked with the house pickled chili and garlic on the table. The Summer rolls were tight and served sushi style. The peanut sauce that came with it was good. The Pho Bo (beef) broth was actually really good. Noodle texture and thin sliced beef were all excellent. And the shredded herbs added a balance and interest to the flavors. The fried dough stick was a lovely authentic homage to how Pho is served in Vietnam, and a fun dipping companion for the broth. Caphe s'ua da (iced coffee) was fragrant, espresso strong and served unmixed so you can see the seductive dark brown hue. But evaporated milk was used--refined, but I much prefer the sweetened condensed milk versions.

A lot of interesting options gives a very nice first impression. The food is good but completely overpriced. It lacks the nice spicy taste of asian cuisine and it is not very traditional. Also I've noticed some Vietnamese restaurants have started adding onion crumbs into their buns (yeah those you add to hot dogs and other junk food). Unfortunately my dish had that unwanted ingredient. Until this point I had already thought of giving the place a solid three stars; however, the dish was full of hairs and eye lashes which cost them a good rating. SERVICE: Slow, careless and unfriendly. Unfortunately these are the first words that come to mind after eating here. The waiter was way too serious and rather unhelpful. Showed no patience and just wanted to get the job done. Also although we were initially alone in the restaurant it took forever for them to take our order, bring our food and later to take our card. A change in attitude (or staff) might help this restaurant improve its service. LOCATION: Hoheluftchaussee is one of Hamburg's nicest places to go out for dinner. It is very lively and there is a lot to choose from. However this restaurant is rather spiritless. On a positive note the place is big making it perfect for big groups and spontaneous visits without a reservation.

So - follow the stars of yelp and get surprised. To me Hoang Mai is one the most authentic Vietnamese restaurants in Hamburg. Uuuugh, its ugly here. First problem - the door is closed. In general you enter the restaurant via the shop beside. Hey if you solved this problem, the spartan interior and green walls may make you think "am I right here". YES YOU ARE!!! The waitress suddenly turned up, presented the menu. Asked If we are in first time. Explained all options of the menu (in really perfect German). Some of the food is vegetarian, but can be ordered with broth. In this case, broth is made of bones - no longer vegetarian at all. Good to now but anyway - bone broth, sounds really good! YOU ARE RIGHT HERE!!! Because most of the people here are Asians. One more point to assume the food is authentic! YOU ARE RIGHT HERE!!! Because the taste is mmmmmmmm really incredible. Portions are OK. Referring to the amount and quality, the price is ok, not cheap but neither expensive. So follow the stars - 'cause Yelp will help you to find the hidden stars!

The service is efficient, friendly and accommodating. I once turned up with a friend of mine minutes after closing and they still served us and where so nice to us, even though we stalled their much deserved closing time. Thank you once again! The decor used to be typical to Asian Street Food restaurants (very basic) but they changed all that and redid the restaurant. Purists, regulars and people in the know may shrug off the redesign but I think its great. Hopefully people whom are not accustomed to asian Street Food won't be dissuaded by the backroom flair any longer. The little trip to Jenfeld is time well spent. As a tip, get there on a saturday or sunday morning. The place is bursting with people from all walks of life. Asian families dressed to the nines, groups of young people looking a little hung over from last night, old wrinkly asians all busy chatting away and most likely me, taking the whole scenery in, slurping my jumbo Pho and just being content.
