Our first night in the Lake District and we needed some food, LOL. A short drive from where we were…read morestaying brought us to Pooley Bridge and this delightful pub. Nice garden to sit in with plenty of tables spread around with stacks of room in between so you never felt 'in the way' of others. Great selection of real ales (yes, yes, yes) with good, fast service even though the pub was busy. We ordered food which was a difficult choice as the menu was extensive. I went for the steak and ale pie. The gravy was thick and tasty with the flavour of the ale. The beef so tender it just melted in the mouth. The pastry, to die for. And the chips were the old fashioned chunky type. I would say, the BEST steak and ale I have ever had. So if you are ever in that region, make the trip to Pooley Bridge and you will not be disappointed.

I've only ever been to the Sun Inn for dinner and drinks, but I've been quite a few times. My…read moreboyfriend's family has a caravan not far away on Ullswater, so it's local for us. I've always had lovely pub food at this place. Over the years I've had the usual dishes like fish and chips, Cumberland sausage, lasagne, and steak and chips. I was just there last week and as always the staff was friendly. Last week my fish and chips was around £10.00 and my bf's steak and chips was £16.00. For good quality pub food in the area, I definitely recommend this place. It also has a great garden area and its own parking area.

Gourmet pub grub…read more This is a pub, restaurant and inn rolled into one. We had dinner in the pub as it's dog friendly but it's the same menu as the restaurant. All the food is sourced locally, with the meat and veg coming from the attached estate, Askham Hall. The menu is a little bit foodie fancy, but it does it very well without getting carried away and losing sight of making the customer happy. For example the "cocoa puffs" on my incredbly tender venison, puffs of chocolate potato that just worked. My sister-in-law had puffs of crackling with her pork that were deliciously light but with all the flavour of crackling. I had a delicious twice baked cheese souffle to start that melted in my mouth like the best omelette ever. It would make perfect winter comfort food. My pudding was apple cheesecake with lavender meringue, salted caramel and apple sorbet. The flavours were amazing and very well balanced. Even the salted caramel which I don't generally rate that highly. I wanted to go back for lunch the next day. Sadly it's not cheap so I would have needed a special offer to justify it. The service was very helpful and pleasant.

Well, this is a pub, but it's the restaurant I'm reviewing. Wow! We stayed at a bed and breakfast…read more11 miles away. The proprietor said: we have some good local pubs, but there's a world class (well, he used some other British phrase that I can't recall) restaurant in Penrith. So we went. Like I said: wow. Locally sourced meat, game (watch for buckshot) and vegetables. We had rabbit pate and a tomato "tart" for appetizers, venison and pork loin for mains, fig tart for dessert. Couldn't be better. And the beer? Out of this world. Nothing like British bitter from the cask.

This is very much a group review as a large group of us descended on this quiet little pub…read moreyesterday evening. We were a diverse group with a wide age range, some vegetarians, a few food allergies and some quirks (but that's just me) Not a massive menu but we all found something which appealed and we were impressed by the waiter's eagerness to find out anything he didn't know about the dishes. The Crown serves a decent hunters chicken which looked delicious (so so delicious that I never got a chance to taste it) and more importantly, was gluten free. Sadly the wonderful chunky chips were not gluten free due to being cooked in the same oil as battered products. My own burger left something to be desired being a little on the dry side but I did get a chance to taste the chicken jalfrezi, which was full of all the right flavours and wonderfully spicy; and the five bean chilli which left my taste buds tingling. The big let down for me was that my ice cream sundae was still in it's plastic container and merely slipped into a sundae glass (No pretence of farmhouse production there). The staff were wonderfully accommodating and were not fazed by a bunch of children playing on their pool table.

He even ended up being ill that night!!!!!!!! Didn't really feel that we could make a complaint about the food because when i first went in and ordered my drink which was a coke that tasted off, i was just told that it was because it was not from a bottle and was not offered another drink. Would never return.
