En 1744, les travaux commencèrent, des ormeaux et des tulipes furent plantés. Mais ils furent interrompus plusieurs années plus tard. En 1797, l'architecte Louis Combes transforma le bâtiment qui servait de demeure au consul de Hambourg qui la trouvait trop petite. Une demeure qui ensuite accueillit le poète Höderlin en 1802. Aujourd'hui, de nombreux restaurants et boutiques y ont élu domicile. Les allées accueillent aussi de nombreuses animations de Noël, marchés et salons publics.

We did a Bordeaux wine tasting when we first arrived and the next morning did a three hour bike tour to both sides on the river. The Old Town is very walkable and bikeable. There are many nice cafes at every step as well as patisseries. The pastries were magnificent especially the canalé.

It is so crowded on Saturdays and Sundays that the stroll is slow and elbow to elbow. Hang on to your purses. Evidently the French come from many other regions to shop and visit on this street. I did buy a great scarf that I treasure. Crowds aren't my thing, so this was a once was enough experience.
