There is a fine collection of porcelain celebrating the cities links with Royal Crown Derby, a military gallery, wildlife displays, an archaeology gallery, and an exhibit reconstructing Bonnie Prince Charlies visit to the city on his way to claim the English thrown. The museum is also home to many of Joseph Wrights paintings. Joseph Wright was born in the city and was a celebrated 18th century artist. The gallery has the largest collection of the artist's work anywhere in the world. This museum is highly recommended.

Pickford's House Museum is free of charge. It's not a huge place, so you won't be spending more than 45-50 minutes there. The exhibit consists of furniture and everyday objects from the 18th and 19th centuries, "peopled" with display dummies in period costumes. You cannot walk into the actual rooms on the ground floor, they're shielded with glass panes. On the upper floor there are small displays of chinaware as well as small figurines. There is nothing spectacular about this place, but the Pickford House Museum does offer an intriguing glimpse into another time. And when you're going to the Derby Art Gallery anyway, you might as well walk further and pay this place a visit. It's free after all.

Situated within a sunny flagstone piazza, The Gallery has the feel of a conservatory with a variety of original paintings and photographic prints on display for sale among white orchids and verdant palms. There is a wide variety of cards for sale alongside mid-range limited edition prints and larger pieces of original artwork. The Junior Artworks club is extremely popular, taking place on Saturdays 10-12 and 2-4 and it is recommended that sessions are booked in advance to avoid disappointment as places are limited to eight children for each class. Previous sessions have seen these eager budding artists painting in a contented hubbub, inspired by the artworks on the walls. Classes are not limited to children and The Gallery run a variety of painting and photographic courses within the premises and on location in The Derbyshire Dales. The Gallery is run by Debra and her daughter, an absolutely adorable pair and this new venture coincides with their move from Norfolk to the local area. Not only are they extremely welcoming, their enthusiasm for the works is contagious and if I lived in Melbourne I have no doubt I would have found myself booked into a course or two! It is well worth popping by if you're in the area. The Gallery is unpretentious, family friendly and there is a cafe a mere stone's throw away.

Its main claim to fame is the outstanding collection of paintings by the important 18th century artist Joseph Wright, but you will also find mummies, and regional archaeological and natural history exhibits at this place - the latter will of course attract mostly school children. The second floor is reserved for temporary exhibitions, and when I visited there was a rather attractive one on the 20th century painter Marion Adnams. The entry is free, and photography is allowed. The attached café is only so-so, and the presentation a bit old-fashioned (and the building itself butt-ugly on the outside!). Again, mostly of note for its Joseph Wright collection.
