I've been a reader and writer for, well, many years, and hands down this is the best book store I…read morehave ever been to, anywhere. They have the most unusual, worthwhile, amazing books--not only in the bindings and illustrations, but in the subject matter, rareity, etc. I picked up an illustrated guide to 19th century illnesses, it is gorgeous, three chapbook style poetry books of "micro poems" in Spanish that are hilarious and irreverent (probably my two favorite descriptors in life), and an amazing illustrated copy of Alessandro Baricco's "Silk" in Spanish (Seda). Incredible. It made my trip to Madrid completely worthwhile. Another worthwhile mention is the graphic novel style biography of Egon Schiele I spotted!

They didn't have the authors I was looking for but suggested others. The place is a bit hard to find (they recently moved and the online map I used has not been updated). What I ordered: I got the goat cheese and tomato bagel with cream cheese and a mint tea for 5€. The bagel was good, not the best I've ever had, but good. They had many other flavor options as well. The bagel came with a small portion of chips, but took a decent amount of time to actually come out. This seems like a nice place to hang out. They also had a HUGE selection of books at decent prices! In my opinion, I would always rather buy used books over new!

J & J's is owned by a ex-pat from the States, but he's been in Madrid long enough to be one of them. It was obvious from the short time I spent sitting at the counter that he has loyal regulars that love to come in and chat with him. I had 2 cappuccino's and also went downstairs to browse around. The books are well organized by type and author and the prices are very reasonable. My cappuccino's were delicious, the environment was great, and the owner couldn't have been nicer. Stop in if you're in the area shopping or if you're looking for a book in English.

I stumbled across this charming bookstore by accident, as it was near my hotel in Puerto del Sol…read more It's right on the street with a somewhat large but eclectic selection of books on the bookshelves in the back or in boxes in front. Being that I don't know Spanish, I couldn't find anything I liked, but even just browsing quickly through the books was fun. If you're planning a stop at San Gines for some chocolate and churros, this is a nice spot to stop nearby.
