WOW this exceeded expectations! We'd been told the west coast could be pretty tempermental weather, so we had our fingers crossed and got a perfect day. The pancake rocks viewing walk is a very easy, paved and accessible mile loop with multiple viewpoints. And the pancake rocks will blow your mind! The layers, the mystery behind how they were formed, and the unique formations were definitely one of the natural highlights of our trip. The blowholes exceeded expectations, too! It was so fun to watch the chimney one blow up as water came in. We loved watching the tide roll in and rock against the waves with impressive force. Visiting from Nelson, on the way to Arthur's Pass, the National Park was a decent detour- but worth it for the beautiful coastal drive & experience. Driving to the area along was delightful, we pulled over many a times to take in all the views. Arriving at the park, with easy parking, there were a number of different paths to try- though we only planned for the main Pancake Rock walk. The Pancake Rock path was an easy quick walk to the shoreline overlook- (though note not handicap accessible due to stairs)- The natural pools, where the waves wash in, creating blowholes, were mesmerizing to watch. We spent longer than we had expected just watching the tide come in and out, birds interacting with the waves. Very meditative gorgeous must-see. read more

The Pancake Rocks are part of a national park. We stopped here on our way from farther down the coast to Christchurch. Although it required at least a 90 minute detour (round trip), it was worth it. First, when coming from the south, it's a beautiful coastal drive to get here. When you arrive, it's a short walk to the Pancake Rocks. The look really cool and you get some nice views of the sea from there. There's a natural pool where you can watch the waves wash in. There's also a nice view up the coast to the north. I first found out about the Pancake Rocks about 5 years earlier when I was in the area but didn't have a chance to go. I'm glad I made the effort this time. read more

Amazing formation of limestone layered like pancakes. Easy to explore by foot on the walkways to see the rock formations. There are also a number of blowholes in the area. Worth for a stop over to see this attraction. It's open to the public for free. read more
