Had to see this unique piece of public art in Canalside. If you're already there it's something to…read morelook at before you leave. Shark Girl has become the most famous thing about this waterfront. An iconic place for photos or just hanging. The photos only take a few seconds but the story is interesting to read up on for a few minutes. Casey Riordan Millard is the artist. It's got a pretty cool story about how it came to be. The sculpture is made of fiberglass. Basically the character was a recurring motif in her art. In 2013 she created a physical sculpture. The art was purchased by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum public art initiative and brought to the city the next year. Physically it's a young girl with ruby red slippers and a blue dress who happens to have a great white shark head. The meaning of it is a fish out of water. A young girl longing for acceptance. The girl sits on a boulder, with enough room beside her for visitors. It has become what's unfortunately called Instagrammable. There's a likelihood of some sorority girls posing making faces or twerking. Great piece of public art to interact with a bit. It's located on Pearl by the Skyway. This is free entertainment so grab a photo or whatever.

If you spend any time at Buffalo's Canalside, you'll probably spot her right away: Shark Girl…read more She's hard to miss (but minus a star because she's a lot smaller than I expected), a lonely little girl in a blue and white dress just chilling on a rock. Shark Girl lives up to her uncreative namesake at least because she has a giant cartoon shark head where her own should be. This hybrid sculpture is absolutely strange (especially for Buffalo), but also kind of perfect. Shark Girl has become one of those "must-see" photo stops in Buffalo. People line up to sit beside her, throw an arm around her shoulder, or just take a goofy selfie with her toothy grin. Weird, approachable, and funny, there's something about her that doesn't take itself too seriously. What's cool is how she manages to be both silly and a little thought-provoking at the same time. If anything, the sculpture makes you appreciate how art doesn't always need to make sense to be fun. Shark Girl is a quirky little Buffalo mascot, and it's worth a stop to take a quick photo with the bizarro landmark. Parking is difficult with lots where you have to pay so be warned. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but lovers of roadside attractions and goofy art should absolutely swing by to check it out.
