The Greenwich Club, on Post Road in East Greenwich is actually a private summertime swim club open…read moreto anyone from anywhere, as long as they pay the dues. There are three swimming pools there - a baby pool, a kids pool, and an Olympic-sized pool for adults and kids who can swim. We joined this year as an alternative to very expensive beach parking and entrance passes, and its proximity to home. This Club is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by tall trees and surrounding a Club House - which is actually a large, very old, East Greenwich Victorian (I think) home in perfect, meticulous, up to date condition. The pool area is also immaculate, and the club also provides a play area for little kids; volleyball for bigger kids, picnic tables and huge grills which are lit in late afternoon for the member families to cook dinner there.
I am actually reviewing this club not for its swim and play activities, but for the dinner specials that are offered to members and guest of the members on Thursday and Friday nights. Dining can be done al fresco on the terrific deck which normally receives lovely early evening breezes, or inside the "clubhouse" where there are tables and a very nice, full bar. The kitchen, where the dinners are cooked by chefs who are recent graduates of Johnson & Wales Culinary School, is just off this room and it is also the cooking area for the snack bar, which offers quite an extensive and amazing array of snacks and meals.
We decided to have dinner at The Greenwich Club this beautiful warm and breezy evening on the deck, as the weather was beyond gorgeous. Arriving at 6:30, the deck was not crowded (although we were told it is packed on Friday nights, and reservations are definitely necessary). The menu this evening offered a variety of appetizers, salads, four main courses (each priced at $16.00) as well as fish and chips, burgers and hot dogs. The four specials this evening were rack of lamb, blackened ahi tuna, an eggplant concoction which I did not study because I don't eat eggplant - and veal scallopinil. We both ordered the rack of lamb. We were literally blown away by the deliciousness of the cooked-to-order baby chops, eight of them (for $16.00, which also blew us away,) accompanied by a lovely rice dish and brussel sprouts. We literally could not believe the value of this meal, nor the excellent quality of it, There is not one restaurant in East Greenwich - or possibly anywhere - that could have served this meal at that price. Everything was fabulous and we had to take some home because it was just too much food, since we each started the meal with the bruschetta appetizer and a garden salad. We each had a drink (no dessert) and the bill, with tax, came to less than $56.00 before the tip.
I'm not sure how this place can serve such excellent meals at such a low price, unless it is because their full bar is serving drinks all day long and those have to be marked up quite a bit.
Bottom line - The wait team is friendly and efficient as well. We will definitely be back for the al fresco dining at the Greenwich Club, as well as for the swimming in the beautiful pool and the immaculate decks.
