Kaltenberg Castle is a legit medieval castle first built in 1292, then destroyed in battle and…read morerebuilt several times over the centuries. For the last 100 odd years, it's been home to the regional Prince (yes, there still is one) and headquarters of a major brewery. We visited the Schloss for the annual Knight's Tournament (Ritterturnier) that runs each July. It was one our more off-the-beaten-track adventures in the area and turned out to be among the most memorable. You can learn all about it on the tournament website: ritterturnier.com. The highlight was a 2 hour outdoor show with jousting, sword fights, horse riding tricks and more. I'm sure something like this must exist elsewhere, but I have never heard about it. My kids are still talking about the show and re-enacting the battle scenes. Before and after the show, there is a full-on renaissance fair where you can shoot crossbows, drink raspberry wine or mead, eat slices of roast venison with your bare hands, try on plate mail armor... you get the idea. Also, you can people watch the 50% of guests who show up in medieval costume. We arrived about 3 hours before show time to eat dinner and check out the fair. In the future, I'd probably leave just an hour for this -- there is plenty to do for several hours and the kids were loving it, but my wife and I had enough after about an hour on a hot July night. Notes if you are going: 1. I heard almost no English spoken here this year. They appear to be trying to branch out to tourists, but this year it seemed very local... which makes it more cool, but also worth knowing if you don't speak German. 2. If you are going from Munich, it's accessible by train but going to be a very late night if you go to the evening show. We hired a taxi and this made getting there a lot more pleasant. 3. Bring water if you are coming with kids. Non-alcoholic drinks were hard to find.
