I think metal detecting is a little of both, although I only plan to compete with my own skills. After doing some exhaustive research I found that a "pin-pointer" is a pretty essential part of the tooling you'll need whether you consider this a sport or hobby. These types of devices minimize the energy you will exert and since at this point I am calling it a hobby that's important to me. There are lots of options and price ranges when it comes to this particular tool and after looking at my options I chose the Fisher Research Laboratory's "F-Pulse".
