We'll start with the office. Quick responses, easy scheduling, short wait times for appointments, always seen on time. Great communication. Then the doctor. It had been a years long journey of pain and helplessness, and within a minute of talking to him, I felt completely reassured that things were finally about to get better. He told me I was a great candidate for surgery, but of course you want to exhaust all other options first so he sent me to pain management and PT. The referrals went through quickly and when those options were tried and failed, he brought me back in and scheduled the surgery for one month out. From then on, I had a contact in the office who was always available to answer questions about prep and timelines and post op, etc. My insurance wanted to put me in a crap hospital, and he personally went to bat with them and convinced them to cover the surgery at one of the best hospitals in the state. The surgery was executed to perfection. It was a big one. Eight hours of which could only be described as a reconstruction of my spine.They had me up and walking immediately after the surgery, (which I have absolutely no recollection of), but I spent five days in the hospital, walking around more and more each day. They sent me home in a big back brace. I stayed with family for two nights and approximately one week after the surgery I was back home living on my own. Now I'm a month out and he just cleared me to resume full activity and to start PT. Oh, and I should probably mention that the surgery worked! All my pain is gone! I've got the spine of an 18 year old! Not only that but the incision (which was massive. Probably close to 2 feet long) is totally healed. There's almost no sign of it. I was expecting (maybe hoping, yeah, I'm that kind of guy) to have a nice juicy scar, but it's gonna heal up like nothing ever happened. I was in intense, chronic pain for years and it's gone! I had a couple follow ups with the office and now I'm about to go into PT and this year's long journey is about to come to an end. Thanks to Dr Nagasawa.

I had pneumonia five times. I seizured seven times! I died twice! I had 13 tubes in me! I had a 35 inch tube. My lungs collapsed twice and a hiatal hernia repair and I was in the hospital for eight months and three different hospitals and dealt with some genius doctors and some doctors that probably should be selling used cars but hey, I'm still alive but the most important thing is the hardware in my neck. Hopefully it's still good so I can one day walk so I can stop being dependent on anybody that's the worst thing oh my God I'm so sick of that. From the very beginning, Dr. Ghasem impressed me with his professionalism, warmth, compassion, and exceptional bedside manner. In fact, I can honestly say that I have never encountered another physician--regardless of specialty--who made me feel as cared for and comfortable as he did. I was extremely apprehensive about having back surgery and was determined to make sure surgery was an absolute last resort. Dr. Ghasem never pressured me or made me feel like surgery was the only answer. Instead, he patiently worked with me for nearly three years, exploring every reasonable option to avoid surgery. Even though he recognized early on that surgery would likely ultimately be necessary, he respected my concerns and gave me the time and support I needed to reach that decision on my own. After nearly three years of trying everything possible, I finally realized there was nothing left to try and decided to move forward with surgery. Now, I find myself shaking my head and wondering what I was so afraid of in the first place. I only wish I had listened to Dr. Ghasem's recommendation from the beginning because I might have been pain-free three years sooner. One thing that really stood out to me (IMO) is that Dr. Ghasem is not the kind of surgeon who looks at every problem and immediately thinks, "Let's operate." He genuinely wants to help his patients find the best solution, even when that solution isn't surgery. That meant an enormous amount to me, especially given how frightened I was about having spine surgery. I also did a tremendous amount of research before ever scheduling my first consultation. I looked into his education, training, residency, professional background, and even searched for complaints and lawsuits. I wanted to know exactly who I was trusting with my spine and essentially my life. Everything I found gave me confidence that I was in excellent hands. And now, having gone through the surgery, I can say without hesitation that I made the right choice in choosing Dr. Ghasem. If you are considering spine surgery or looking for a spine surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. Alexander Ghasem. He is an exceptional surgeon, but more importantly, he is an exceptional human being who genuinely cares about his patients. I will forever be grateful to him for giving me my life back and helping me get out of pain.

I never considered writing a review…read morebefore but decided to write one today after reading a one star review because the patient "had to wait an hour," or the "staff was incompetent with scheduling" etc... Bottom line, Dr.Stepan Kasimian is BUSY because of the same reason your favorite restaurant only accepts reservations and there still is a wait, because they are EXCELLENT ! I want to give my story, as detailed as possible, without boring you the reader. Around September 2008, I hurt my lower back doing very heavy T-Bar rows at the gym. Back then in my naive youth years, I never properly stretched or warmed up, just hit the iron. Why not ? I'm invincible and I'm special. Nothing will EVER happen to me. Guess what ?? After 20 years of abusing my body, on September 2008, I found out the hard way that I wasn't so special, and I definitely was "breakable." The day after that memorable T-bar back workout, I felt this intense heat on my lower back. Something that I had never experienced before, and hopefully never will. After 1 or 2 hours of this heat, I started to feel this sharp pain, which became a dull pain off and on. The next morning, with zero exaggeration, I couldn't move out of bed. I took maybe 5 Tylenol's that day and didn't really think about it, hoping that it would pass. Fast forward 2 years later on 2010. My right thigh always was in pain when I stood up, accompanied with numbing in my big right toe. From 2010-2014, I literally had about 6 MRI's from 4 different doctors. Unfortunately, they all looked at me at gave me prescriptions for physical therapy and some prescribed me pills which I refused. I went back to these same doctors, 2 who were the "best" at Cedars and told them "it's been 4 years of leg pain, numb toes, and now my left leg if hurting when my right leg isn't." He told me to "hang on" it will get better because the MRI shows a small bulging disc(approximately 3-4 cm,) nothing in his opinion that would warrant an operation because I was "still walking" and I looked strong in his opinion. Around the summer of 2014, I met Dr. Kasimian, and yes, he was busy and there was a big wait. HE ACTUALLY LISTENED TO ME. I WILL REPEAT AGAIN, DR. KASIMIAN ACTUALLY LISTENED TO ME ! Compared to other doctors who you see for 5 minutes maximum in the office while charging your insurance company $1000. Dr. Kasimian after 20 minutes recommended I receive a brand new MRI because he wanted the most up to date information. 2-3 weeks later after the MRI Dr. Kasimian recommended a micro decompression on my L4/L5 and L5/S1. I had the procedure on October 1st of that year and was surprised to find out that I had a bone spur on my L5 vertebrae pushing down on a nerve which WAS NOT evident or visible on the MRI. THE SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS AND I TOLD DR. KASIMIAN THAT HE "Saved My Life !" I said that because he did. 6 years of sciatica isn't a joke, not including the mentall trauma I endured because of the chronic pain. Thumbs Down to Cedars Sinai Orthopedics who really didn't care because they believed if I was walking, surgery wasn't needed. THUMBS UP to Dr. Kasimian who really cared and took time to see what options were available to help me.

Receptionists can't do their jobs and the billing department is apparently out of the office by 2pm every time I call. I've had 2 prior spine surgeries which were laminectomy and laminectomy revision. I was told my only option after that would be a fusion. So I switched health insurance and did extensive research and Dr. Melikian was on the list of top neurosurgeons. I made an appointment to see Dr. Melikian who ordered multiple MRIs. After careful review Dr. Melikian recommended a microdiscectomy which ended up being the best decision for my back. The pain I was feeling daily is gone and the recovery has been much easier than previous surgeries. His Physician Assistant JoAnna and the rest of his office staff were always so supportive and helpful. I would recommend Dr. Melikian to anyone suffering from back pain due to spinal issues.

He arranged a quick phone consultation at no charge. He came across as very amiable, genuinely concerned, and highly knowledgeable about the subject. During our conversation, he brought up additional tests and treatment options I wasn't previously aware of. The call was definitely productive and appreciated. My only gripe, generally speaking--not specific to his practice--is that stem cell treatments are exorbitantly priced and not covered by insurance. Expect to pay anywhere from $6,000 to $9,000 or more for various stem cell treatment options. So, not a go just yet until I figure out how to come up with the money, I will have to live with my back pain.
