As the Friedrichshain neighborhood is filled with tons of civilized "sit down" and exchangeable cocktails bars, Feuermelder is a great exception to the rule. The beer and the snacks are still cheap, the service is probably the fastest and friendliest in town, the pool table is still there and the Sandman has been hosting it's monday Blue sessions with local Legend S.C.H. for 15 years now. Yes, lots of Americans have moved into the neighborhood and considering the fact that you can't go anywhere in Berlin without listening to some latte-slurping Americano talk about the new gallery or shop he just opened in Friedrichshain, I sometimes wonder whether there are any hipsters left in New York City, Seattle or Des Moines, Iowa at all.... Anyway. You can't really go wrong with the Sandmann if you end up in this part of town and I would suggest you give it a try on a sunday when they have the occasional surprise-gig.

The beer assortment makes me smile, although I've never had all the beers I wanna drink here because of the price. They have loads of beer from England, which are expensive to export, so I can forgive that. Anyway, the only beer they have on tap is Guinness and they pour a decent pint. The owner's usually there making friends with everyone. This place is a dive with class. Is that possible? Well, if so this place is it. I took one star out because it's a smoker bar and be happier than a lamb in the month of Ramadam if I they had a non-smoker's section where I could enjoy my pint in the winter months.
