El Horno - Not a gauntlet yet

I thought El Horno meant Horny. Which could be appropriate for the place. But in Spanish it…read moretranslates to The Oven. I guess for all the HOT guys in this gay bar? Hmm. El Horno is basically an L-shaped bar counter with some bar stools. The small room can get really crowded at night, but most of the action is outside in front of the bar. It's not too bad after September, but every night during the gay high holy days is a gauntlet. You can barely move up or down the alley (and hold onto your wallet). El Horno drinks are pretty standard for a gay dive bar that caters to bears. Mostly well, a few calls, lots of beer. Scruffy bartenders that won't want to mix anything too fancy or that takes too long. Don't expect much. Most of the time my friends and I just ordered beers to keep it simple. If ordering outside, make sure you know which bar your server is working out of. It's that ridiculously crowded.

Frankly, all the gay bars kinda melted together at the midnight hour. El Horno stood out because of their bearish clientele. OK, I lied. All the gay bars had bearish clienteles. This one had the added bonus of bearish bartenders, a plus if you're the hibernating type. Basic cocktails were 8€, one Euro cheaper than neighboring CoX Cocteleria, and they liberally made familiar favorites. Jamie went for a Margarita, while I had a Mojito (photo: https://yelp.to/rwnRtFp5A3). Downed with gusto and moved on after our obligatory bear watching. DRINKS - 3 stars...familiar libations made on the quick AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...a compact den but outdoors is where the action is SERVICE - 3 stars...bears that growled a bit TOTAL - 3 stars...'Horno' doesn't mean horny...it means oven...it fits RELATED - Exploring Barcelona and Sitges? At least until Jamie W and I return which…read moreis all but inevitable because we belong on the Street of Sin ready for Catalonian carousing. I don't think that'll happen here for us though. Strangely, the vibe reminded me of the Country Bear Jamboree in Disneyland. I almost wish the bartender was animatronic because as a human, he simply ignored us. Granted we don't speak Catalonian or Spanish, but does that mean I don't need a nuzzle like the real bears coming out of hibernation? The low-key beartender merely informed us they serve basic drinks and beer, no cocktails. No tequila sunrise, no espresso martini. Just a 7 Up and a Diet Coke (photo: https://yelp.to/Wo9yf7oeOk). It's worth noting that you get a second drink for just one Euro if you drink it within the hour. No problem but we'd rather go back to Parrots. DRINKS - 3 stars...not much of a beer guzzler, OK? I have so much love for this bar. It was by far the friendliest bar we visited during nearly 2…read moreweeks in Sitges. The bartenders are super handsome and oh-so flirty and fun. They do have a happy hour, basically you one drink at regular price, show your receipt before midnight and get the 2nd drink for 1€, making 2 beers around 5€. In the back you'll find a trough, a tv showing a selection of bear films as well as some darker spaces to mingle with other guests. Also, BB plays the best music from 80s to indie. On a few rainy nights we spent the evening slurping beers and listening to cool music. The bar is located upstairs above Queenz and has a small patio which gives you a great view of the action at "Bear Alley". With so many bars to choose from, Bear Bar is a standout.

Walking through the second door reveals a small bar with 2 bartenders, and a little stage with el piano. What sets this gay bar apart from the others are the live singers and performers that grace the stage mostly in summer. West End & Broadway singers, cabaret singers, et al. A few were so good over the years that I bought their CD. Other evenings have pianists entertaining the crowd. In the summer one bartender does double duty as video DJ and keeps the music hopping with old campy music videos (think oldies like 70-80-90s Europop) plus same era divas like Madonna. I definitely used Shazam to ID a number of songs outside my repertoire such as: The Communards "Don't Leave Me This Way, with Sarah Jane Morris"?! We always manage to have a good time here. We especially look forward to Summer Showtune Sundays which becomes a fantastic singalong. The bartenders are super friendly. The crowd is drunk, fun and many times dancing and singing along. El Piano usually temporarily closes in the fall and returns as the Sitges season restarts. Check their Facebook page to be sure it's open. Also check out the Playbills above the urinals. So unique you keep your eyes looking up instead of down.

It's a bit hidden away on another alley, and the elegant door made us think we were entering a private nightclub. Unfortunately Jamie W. and I came here when they weren't featuring live entertainment. That was a month away according to the friendly, trivia-saturated bartender. Instead he ran an endlessly enthralling video reel of classic and kitschy movie musical numbers on Showtune Sunday. Of course that meant watching Judy sing "The Trolley Song" in "Meet Me in St. Louis" followed by Liza performing "Money, Money" with Joel Grey in "Cabaret". They had a clip of Dame Judi Dench in a dirndl singing "16 (Going on 17)" from "The Sound of Music". Oh, and of course, they showed Barbra on the tugboat with her wilted yellow flowers belting "Don't Rain on My Parade" from "Funny Girl". Yes, I know the clip is 56 years old, but I can still stand, can't I? Meanwhile, the three gay couples in the bar were sitting quietly enraptured by the video and their Chardonnay. Meanwhile we had our predictable Gin & Tonic and Tequila Sunrise for 10€ (photo: https://yelp.to/sbWjnmscYD). DRINKS - 4 stars...lasted us for at least six numbers AMBIANCE - 5 stars...if the video reel is ambiance, sure SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly bartender who knows a lot about Patti Lupone TOTAL - 4 stars...if you need to chill away from the Street of Sin and want to listen to divas RELATED - Exploring Barcelona and Sitges? There are no indoor tables or seats. Outside, the aptly named Runway Terrace has several rows of cocktail tables and seats facing the "runway" which is Carrer de Joan Tarrida, the infamously narrow alley with at least 6 gay bars. At night, men packed to overflowing in front of the bars. You are basically walking the catwalk or runway to get there. It's fun to wade through but watch for pickpockets. This became our favorite bar each night where we could observe the passing parade, plus watch which guys are contemplating and then entering Bukkake "Bar" across the way (IYKYK). The servers and bartenders are super friendly. One waiter remembers and treats us as old regulars, and our bar tab was paid up nightly when leaving. Sangrias are good. G&T are popular and gin comes in a huge goblet with separate cans of tonic water. Runway Terrace had an unexpectedly fun and relaxing vibe, but steps away from the action!
