My short answer is that I got accepted into the Computer Science graduate program at the University of Manitoba. The wrinkled brows that said folks had then dissipated and life carried on. Unfortunately, a month into my first semester, the entire faculty went on strike. I had one professor who did not cross the picket lines. Instead, he continued holding classes at his home, which was generous of him. After roughly ten weeks of this strike's duration, I decided to drop out of my master's program. I do enjoy saying that I am a master's dropout. However, I eventually did get my degree over a decade later, at a different university, in a completely different field. The campus is similar to York University, which is my alma mater. You are either taking Winnipeg Transit (I was either on the 60 or 78 bus) or you are driving 60 km/h for a stretch before things slow down. It's still quite odd to me to accelerate towards campus. I went back in July 2016 and the speed limit has dropped to 50 km/h. Woo hoo! During my brief experience as a graduate student, I was pleased with my professors and advisor. I liked the courses that I was in. It was unfortunately that I didn't finish them, but I don't regret my decision to put my studies on hold and go into the workforce. I knew that I could cycle back to being a student again. So, if I ever lose my mind and go for a PhD, I'll do it in my sixties, after I retire... haha! The only negative experience that I had was dealing with the Registrar's Office. I had to settle a matter in-person with my registration. The woman there was unpleasant and asked if I was a foreign exchange student. I said that I was from the province of Ontario. At last check, it was still considered a part of Canada. She probably rubbed me the wrong way because she was picking her teeth with the blue cap on her BIC pen. Yeah, that memory is still incredibly vivid. I spent a decent amount of time on campus and can generally get around just fine if I'm walking around. When Winnipeg hosted the Pan-Am Games years ago, I volunteered as a technology expert for media people and reporters, and worked at the Max Bell Centre. It was great taking in snippets of volleyball games between servicing printers and more. I don't envision returning as a student at this university. However, I felt comfortable here during my brief stint as a student. (135)

MacLean's does not rate Manitoba highly…read more Bear in mind, Manitoba is financially a so-so province, and the winter weather is a big turnoff. These two factors in combination don't help in the "reputation" part of the survey. It's not exactly a huge surprise that better weather locations such as Simon Fraser and U.Victoria generally rank high in the comprehensive rankings. And ranking faculty based in large part on awards won (which MacLean's does, and it is a heavily weighted factor), not sure about that. Those tenured profs who are good at winning awards often times are lousy lecturers, and are inclined to delegate part of their lecture duties, as well as paper grading duties, to grad students. So the benefit students get from having award winners on staff can be dubious. To be fair, though, professors who have a choice among job offers, will often choose a city with a better winter, and/or that is more cosmopolitan. Though some of my profs liked the house you can get for your money in the 'peg, and actually chose Manitoba over opportunities in Alberta, Ontario and BC. So your profs are not purely gonna be those who couldn't get a job in Vancouver. Canada's winter is Canada's winter, everywhere but southern BC, its gonna happen. Sometimes we make too big a deal out of -22 versus -14 (though when you are standing at a bus stop - which you might do as a student - it does matter some). The experience I had at U of M was a very good one. I'll say what anybody with wisdom says about university - what you get out of it depends a lot on what you put into it. Self-motivation goes a long way. The particular name of the school matters less than you might think (as long as we're not talking a community college or technical institute). If you're actually there to study hard, get good grades and a degree to help you with the rest of your life, and do it in a city large enough to have some semblance of culture so you can have at least some fun along they way, U of M is a legit option. In my work life, I've never felt like the profs forgot to teach me the core things I needed to know to succeed in my profession.

I just can't afford a $15 movie ticket per person when there's 2 of us going, even the tickets are not worth that when I can wait and buy the movie for $25 to own it for life lol The cinema itself is nice: clean, organised, nice staff (some even from Towne Cinema 8 that i know), some staff comes off as rude when asking a simple question, though. I do love the seats but still not worth that high price tag. I hate how when you can't make it to a movie whether it be an emergency or the weather because you don't drive and can't go out in the freezing cold to catch 2 busses in the middle of winter they tell you you have to go down there?? make it make sense. I do like the perks of ordering on the Atom app because you don't encounter this problem but then you don't get discounts for their Wednesday deal: 2 movie tickets, popcorn and 2 drinks so that's a downside but at least you can cancel your tickets yourself and either refund them to your atom account or back to your original payment method. I do prefer Cineplex over Landmark Cinemas ever since they closed down Towne Cinema 8, I go to Cineplex Northgate when they play English movies for $4 just like how Towne Cinema 8 was (actually it was $5.19 at Towne Cinema 8) but still better than the hefty prices of these large screen cinemas. The popcorn is decent, better than Cineplex's but still way too salty just like Cineplex.

Tip: Collect Scene+ points when you pay for movie tickets either online or at a kiosk, and snacks…read moreat the concession stands. I had a few fun goals during my recent vacation in Winnipeg. One of them was to visit this Cineplex Odeon McGillivray Cinemas and VIP. It completed my visiting every Cineplex location in Winnipeg. This Cineplex location is the only one offering VIP experiences. I like the idea of dining while taking in a movie. The downside is that it's super expensive at any Cineplex VIP location, including this one. I took in F1: The Movie on my birthday. I chose going to the 4 pm show, which was perfect for me to have lunch and dinner before and after this flick. This Cineplex opened well after I had moved back to the greater Toronto area. It was nice to finally check it out. There was plenty of parking when I arrived. I parked fairly close to the entrance and walked in. I like that there's a ramp when you enter the building. It makes those who require a wheelchair enter and leave it more smoothly. There are also hand railings for those who need some sturdy help. Stairs can be difficult, so it was nice to not see them. I made a left and was at the concession stands. I had already had lunch, but needed a drink. I got a regular Diet Coke. The man at the concession stand was friendly and great. He scanned my Scene+ barcode on my phone, and then my e-gift card barcode to pay for my drink. Done and done! I found auditorium 8, which was next door to the VIP theatres. Sadly, the F1 poster wasn't there. I couldn't take my usual photo of it. What's cool about auditorium 8 is that you descend down to your seat. I chose row F. Everyone else was higher up, likely because they like being further up from the screen. I like being closer to it. At this theatre, it felt like I had the entire theatre to myself because no one sat around me. It was heaven! There was lots of leg room. I appreciated the drink holder. The screen was bright and crisp. The sound was amazing. The stairway was lit when the rest of the movie theatre was dark. F1 had a duration of 2.5 hours. I was so into this movie that it didn't feel like it was that long. My bladder also held up nicely. Yay! I used the washroom before I left. It's the same style of washrooms that you get at any Cineplex VIP. I like that you don't need to push a door to enter the women's washroom. You simply walk in and find a stall. The women's washroom was impeccably clean. It was bright and inviting. Full marks! I had a wonderful experience here. I'd definitely return to take in another movie when I'm in Winnipeg. (286)

You can purchase food prior to entering the seating area in their lounge and take it into the screening. Or you can order food right at your movie theater seats. Fried pickles with ranch: this was a wonderful appetizer. They used big quarter pieces of pickles and fried them lightly in batter. The dish wasn't oily at all. The ranch dip was a perfect compliment to the dill taste. The seats were nothing like I've ever sat in for a movie. It was like sitting on your own personalized couch. I'm 5'10 and my legs were sprawled out without touching the seat in front of me during the movie. I was even able to curl up and almost sit cross-legged in these seats. The tables placed on either arm rest was spacious enough for me to put everything on. They give each patron 2 cup holders too! For $17.99 admission, you pay for an experience rather than just a movie! It's hard to go back to the "normal" movie theaters after the VIP experience.
