Quilts gardens and…read morepoets The first Yarmouth library was started around 1890 and located in an old Baptist Church in the center of town. This soon proved to be inadequate but fortunately the town had a wonderful man named Joseph Merrill whose dream was to provide a real library for Yarmouth. He hired the well known Boston architect, A.W. Longfellow, the nephew of the famous poet, to construct a permanent library that the town would be proud of. The stunning new library was dedicated and opened in 1905. The wonderful library was renovated in 1988 and greatly enlarged but it retained the lovely feel and ambiance of the original structure. The library today is a wonderful place. Huge windows and stunning wood staircases with graceful carvings and designs.. A garden area outside was added in 1990 that just adds to the charm. Lots of old libraries in New England have quilts adorning the walls but the Yarmouth Library has some really beautiful ones, including one quilt that tells the history of the town and another that is actually a map. The librarians and people in this library were gracious, helpful and just plain nice. You could tell that they were proud of there library and wanted to share it. A wonderful library to visit and appreciate even if you aren't interested in the books.

There are so many small wonders of this place that add up to make it the magical space that it is--an extensive selections of books, DVDs, and more; big open spaces; quiet study areas; varied seating; exhibits downstairs; a bulletin board of information and happenings...I could go on and on! Plus, the staff here are the kindest, most helpful folks, and the library's website is excellent. There are so many opportunities for community involvement and enrichment through the library. It is truly a hub of information and knowledge. I HIGHLY recommend a visit to the Portland Public Library!

A window to the…read moreworld The Freeport Community Library is a new facility that was completed in 1997 and still has that squeaky clean look to it. A sprawling building that is the home to many events and programs. Even though many parts of the library look very new, it still has a very comfortable and homey feel to it. Lots of nice chairs, furniture and huge windows in places to let in natural light. The library has a great genealogy and local history room, free wifi and all the things necessary to do some serious research of just sit and read a book or magazine. A Window to the World, is the library's motto, and it certain is appropriate. A wonderful library where people can seek the past or look forward into the future.

Books scopes and…read moreHulk The Falmouth Library was opened in 1952 after the Library Association purchased a private home and converted it into a library. After several additions and renovations it now is a pleasant and spacious place that continues to serve the town and it's people. The Falmouth Library is one of those libraries with all kinds of cool stuff inside. Some serious, some fun and some stuff just whimsical and foolish. The kids section is obvious well used by the local ankle bitters and is a place to play, have fun, and perhaps even learn a thing of two. The library has a community room in the basement and even has a little telescope patrons can rent out. Falmouth is a library with a whole lot to do. Pretty amazing for a town of only 11,000 people.

A work in…read moreprogress The Walker Memorial Library is Westbrook was constructed back in 1894 from private donations from the Walker family. Lots of libraries during that time period were built by money from individual citizens or families. The library is lovely from the outside, a huge and looming Gothic type of structure that was typical of the time. And like many lovely libraries built over a century ago soon proved to be too small so various additions were added over the years. The library is once again being renovated to make it more efficient and user friendly for the twenty first century. Unfortunately that means the very old part is going to be closed to the public for a while. Too bad, because as far as I'm concerted that is the best part. The library still is pretty cool but not nearly as large as it looks from the outside. Still has just about everything you would expect from a library but you kind of have to put up with the construction being done. Hard to really give this library it's full due. It does have some very cool windows, lots of flowers both inside and out and some friendly librarians. Not a whole lot of books and other materials or cool places to sit but then a large portion of the cool library isn't available. Hopefully the money will be raised and the work finally completed and the venerable, historic and lovely old library will once again be ready to continues into the next century.

You can get just about any book or movie you want because the public libraries now network. If Windham doesn't have it but another town does, they'll send it to your local library so you can check it out. In addition to resources, they also have a nice area for the littles to play in. It includes a couple of computers, a train table, puzzles, activities and more. If you check the monthly calendar, there are also special free events to attend. Lastly, there are discount passes that you can sign up for that help save money, or even get you free admission to surrounding museums, parks and more.

CONS: - Limited seating areas during midterms/finals week which is expected - Sometimes dirty desks in study rooms (i.e. food stains). I don't believe they clean the library very often. TIPS: - Can park at meters if not a student (free after 6pm weekdays and free all day on the weekends)

(Note: You will always have a junk drawer, it is part of being attached to this mortal coil - just accept it because that clutter is a part of your SOUL.) When I moved to Gray a few years ago, it was a little library, good staff and just fine to meet my needs. I could not imagine spending much time there. It was small, and just a place to go in and out for me. It was recently expanded and renovated - and wow - huge change. It's bright and airy, there is room to breathe in there, and has become quite lovely. Definitely a place now to hunker down with some work, so some writing or research. The hours can be a bit wonky for a person that works 9-5 to get to, but it is not impossible - you just need to remember the days it's open later. Another bonus - it looks like they are taking graphic novels seriously and I just checked out a bunch from their new arrivals. Libraries that get that graphic novels deserve shelf space get high marks from me.

The staff is always friendly and helpful. They are great when it comes to a new recommendation or helping you hunt down a book from another branch. They have a storyline for young ones. Today I was unable to find an author I was looking for and the librarian was quick to find who I was looking for and make the request from the Main branch in downtown Portland they will reach out when it arrives and I can hopefully start it this weekend!
