Solely on the reason that the steak my husband ordered (bone-in filet) was charred beyond even a Pittsburgh char (which he did not ask for, he just wanted a medium rare steak). It was quite rare inside, and the outside was cancer-causing charred like crazy! There were definitely some spots of awesomeness, but the severe char was beyond appetizing. It just didn't seem anywhere close to being medium rare. Seems like their ovens or skillets are extremely hot! The interior is very nice. Industrial chic, dark and moody. Ate here last night for restaurant week. The food was really good but as others have said probably somewhat over priced. Service was lacking quite a bit. We did not have a great experience with our waiter. He spent at least 15-20 minutes trying to talk our group out of the restaurant week menu (like came over 2 different times to talk about this) which came off as super tacky. They were also out of one of the main courses but didn't tell us until our food was served and he just blamed the kitchen and didn't really take ownership. Hid behind the manager who came to apologize and got something new out very quickly as well as comped that persons meal so he was great. I truly do not think our waiter came back to our table after that. Valet is $8 for them to park your car 4 feet away, just go park in the garage spots and they won't tow you! Only points of concern was a slight wait time when we arrived, kindve like why make a reservation. Awful - don't waste your time or money. Terrible anniversary dinner. The waitress spilt soy sauce ALL over my boot with my broken foot, my regular shoe, and my very expensive handbag. However, once seated, we asked for water, and I had to follow up a second time as it never arrived. When I reminded our server, his response was, "They're working on it!" -- for water? That was a bit odd. I opted for the Restaurant Week special. The cod was just okay; I've had better. The dragon roll was quite good, and the cheesecake was fantastic. My friend ordered the s'mores but was disappointed that it came as a DIY kit, which wasn't clearly explained on the menu. Phillip was an amazing server! He was knowledgeable of the menu and offered great recommendations. He recommended adding the truffle butter to the steak which elevated it to another lever as well as the cheesecake being the perfect end to our dinner. We went back for our second visit. First time I felt the food and service were average, left my review on open table, can't update the review unless you reserve thru there so I came here to update. We sat at the bar and had some drinks and sushi. The sushi very well could be the best in Houston. The two bartenders, Jared and Gabriel, were excellent. Made great drinks, had great conversations and their recommendations were on point. I told them I don't really like to order steak at restaurants because I cook them at home and prefer to eat things that I can't cook when I go out. He asked the chef to make me a seared tuna steak, which they did. It's not on the menu but it should be. It was amazing! This is a beautiful restaurant built out of an old door factory, and the interior designer pays due homage to the building's history. You can dine indoors or on the porch. We chose the latter, as the interior is quite loud, and you can't have a conversation without yelling. The staff is among the most professional, knowledgeable, and hospitable that I have ever interacted with. Our waiter, John, was perfect--good-humored, well informed, and accommodating. He always knew exactly when to show up at the table, a skill that only the best waitstaff possess. The front personnel were also top-notch. The drinks were made exactly as ordered. My dining companion is very exacting about the details of his martinis, and the bartender nailed it perfectly. For appetizers we split a sushi roll, one of the more reasonably-priced items on the menu. It was delicious, as was the Scottish salmon crudo, which melted in my mouth. There is only one negative about Prime 131, which unfortunately is a big one, and I have to dock it a star. I ordered the 12 oz American New York Striploin steak, medium rare. While the sear and seasoning were perfect, the meat was overdone, dry, tough, and gristly. This was just not up to the quality expected of a $76 steak. In fact, just a few weeks ago, I grilled a $12 NY strip from a local supermarket, and it was far better. If my order was representative, Prime 131 is not competitive with high-end Houston steak houses. Of course, it's not reasonable to condemn an entire kitchen for what just could have been a bad outlier, but steaks are so expensive that I won't be taking the risk of ordering steak here again. Amazing food and service from Liz, do, Matt, and Christian. The food is very high quality and worth the price. It's pricey but honestly the value is way more there to me compared to other nice places I've been in Houston - the standout was the bone marrow (must get) and the chorizo salad. Everything else was excellent too. The spicy tuna roll was really good. The dessert was a little too sweet for me but that's because I'm not a huge dessert fan. We want to come back to try their KBBQ omakase - hopefully they can add a steamed egg option to go with it in the future like other kbbq places I'm sure they will execute it great- all their dishes so far we tried are home runs. Service was not up to par for this price point; My husband's steak was cooked as ordered, however my chicken which was supposed to be "a little spicy", was completely lacking flavor. The best thing about the meal was the grilled bread. Any illusion of fine dining was dismissed when one of the patrons came in dressed in an athletic shirt and shorts. I recently visited Prime 131 for the first time. The restaurant is very nicely done, and the ambiance was very relaxing for a steakhouse. However, my issue is the misleading labeling and pricing of the Australian Wagyu Beef. The menu states only 14oz Australian Wagyu Striploin @ $134. We inquired about the Australian grade of the product since the product we received had no marbling and not much taste. After pressing our server several times for an answer, we were told it was grade 4. Below is the Australian grading system, which I would guess most Houston customers do not know. According to the AUS-MEAT grading system, average quality Australian Wagyu beef is rated 3 to 7, and lower quality beef is rated 0 to 2. The highest quality Australian Wagyu beef will have ratings of 8 or 9 on the AUS-MEAT scale. These AUS-MEAT ratings are essentially the equivalent of A5 ratings awarded to Japanese Wagyu beef by the Japanese Meat Grading Association. I would think the Berg Group and Prime 131 would offer the highest quality products since they are considered a premier restaurant chain here in Houston. It was very disappointing to see them selling an inferior product labeling it, and pricing it as a premium product. The only reason they can get away with this is because local people don't know the Australian grading system. read more

My husband and I visited Prime 131 again last night for the third time since their opening in mid-March. The fact that we have been 3 times in just a few weeks should say it all, but here is my breakdown. Ambiance: Pros -- We are bar people. If a restaurant has a bar, we're sitting at it. The bar at Prime 131 is simply one of the best. It's large with lots of comfortable seating. The wall of windows allows for great natural light without being overly bright. The restaurant seating is plentiful and includes a sushi bar and seating that allows you to watch the open flame concept. Cons -- The only real con to the ambiance is the rest of the restaurant is very dark. The restrooms, particularly, are virtual black holes. Food: Let's start with what we have tried over our 3 visits. We have had the whole lobster (twice), an American filet, the Australian wagyu strip, the baby chicken, the miso cod, the shishito peppers, the chef's selection of nigiri (twice), the tuna roll, the salted edamame, the spicy edamame, french fries, the cheesecake and the smores (twice). Pros -- Everything has been excellent! We had a bit of an over-char issue on the filet but to be fair it was their second day open and I think they were still getting used to the open flame. Our second whole lobster was also on the verge of being undercooked but not enough that we sent it back. Our favorites are clearly those menu items we keep reordering. Cons -- It's expensive. It's frankly really expensive. However, it is worth the price. If it is within your budget to visit, you must! Service: Pros -- The service has been top notch at every visit, but we are going to directly call out Alex at the bar. Absolutely one of the best service experiences we have ever had. He's engaging, knowledgable, attentive and a master at his job. We will be asking for Alex from now on. We also want to give a shout out to Cara who is another one of their great bartenders. We asked to speak with the manager Richard who dismissed us as if he couldn't be bothered. Richard became combative when I asked if he could explain why the server selected that item instead of what we requested. He told us well let me see what I can do. I explained that I'm not here for charity, I just want to pay for what I requested. I've never experienced such disrespect. What started as a wonderful experience became the worst experience and I will not return. The sever came to the table and apologized, then I had to ask him to resend Richard to finalize our conversation because he never returned after waiting 15 minutes and watching him touch various tables. Finally Richard came to the table and told us he thought we were just going to pay since I didn't want Charity! I told him that's correct I want the check to reflect what I ordered, again this man walked away then came back to tell me in the future the server need to repeat orders so this doesn't happen again... that's great maybe he should of done this training from the time they hired staff. Just had the Korean bbq option and it was fantastic. Matthew our server and chef helped us cook the meat and he was so friendly and fun and the meat was delicious. The bonchons were extremely high quality and the steamed egg was so good. We are picky and often go to COTE in nyc and Miami and this may just have been better than it (the kimchi had better flavor and egg texture was better). Expensive but worth it in our opinion for the experience and quality of the food. Also the rice is extremely high quality too. We are picky and this restaurant is very good.
