This is the place to get your collectables in Belfast…read more You've probably seen all their larger items outside the shop on your way out of Belfast and said to yourself, 'I've got to go in there' but never got round to it. Set aside an afternoon and walk across Custom House Square to On The Square Emporium. This vintage shore/auction house has some of the most quirky stock you're likely to find anywhere. They have everything form a human skull to retro cameras! I spent around 40 minutes riffling through their various antiques and furniture items. The only ting I would say is that each item seemed quite expensive although you wouldn't expect anything different for collectables. Also make sure you ask the 'all in' cost of items as some have an added buyers premium - this will keep you right. I absolutely love this shop - more of a museum really without an entrance fee, if you're looking for a signature item of furniture for your home then pay The Emporium a visit.

Upstairs there is an extensive collection of old photographs, coins and bottles. Downstairs there are lots of Victorian/Edwardian hall lamps and light fittings, a deers head with antlers (which has been there a while) china, ornaments, prints and pictures. Archives seems to be popular with collectors of things like coins etc, mostly men. I spent about twenty minutes in here the other day as the place is very small and quite intimate which made me feel I couldn't really use the place as a library. There is an extensive of first editions as well as a surprisingly large collection of old children's books - many of which I recognized from my own childhood such as Jemima Puddle duck and Thomas the tank engine. Because of the uniqueness of some of the books and the extraordinary condition they have been kept in some cost over £40. Obviously there are other books you can pick up for a fraction of the recommended retail price and I was able to find a book on painting on glass for a mere £6.00 - let my new hobby commence!

There's also a rich selection of children's titles from days gone by from old authors like GA Henty and Alison Uttley, as well as early editions of Enid Blyton and Biggles. The shop is small but well laid out, kept well and cosy. It is in fact, a jewelers. It's just an explosion of gold jewelry, watches, little boxes and various antiques which is a lot for the eye to take in. From venturing into this 2nd hand shop I can only assume that they will buy absolutely anything, anyone's selling. It's run by a strange looking man who just smiles as you walk in. It's quite small so you always feel like he's looking at you as you wonder round trying to find a little hidden gem among the mass of items spread out over 4 glass counters. I was doing a message along the street and thought finally it was my chance to check it out. More Junk is perfectly named, it is filled with junk of all sorts. Crockery and cabinets, pictures and lamps, DVDs and old coins, it is all there. I nearly had a heart attack as I walked in to find myself face to face with a life size, pretty scary Jack Nicholson statue, random indeed. It reminded me of the flea markets in Berlin, but without the hipsters and beautiful surroundings. It was a bit more junk than kitsch for my liking, but I'll be in again, you never know what a magpie like me might find.

It's a fairly modest affair, drawing a small crowd of enthusiasts mostly but it's quite interesting to look around. Among the more intriguing wares on display I think are the old postcard stands and the vinyl, which includes quite a lot from the 60s and 70s. It's a good opportunity, if you are interested, to see how the market is doing in those areas and perhaps something up.

This store opened up in 2009 and seems to be doing very well. I love going in for a wee hoke about and while, like at most second hands, the results are varied, I've managed to find a few little pieces amongst the rails. It is predominately clothing, but there is the odd bit of furniture which tends to be beautifully crafted dressers or wardrobes - just what you need to hold all your beautiful vintage items, right? The staff are always very welcoming, the prices are right and there's always something new to find, rather than the same old stuff you see on the high street normally. Plus, it's run by the East Belfast Mission who do a lot of good work in the poorer parts of East Belfast, engaging with young people and homeless outreach, so everyone's a winner!

This isn't just another vintage shop, it's slightly better quality than the others. They do a great job with mannequins, I'm always impressed with their window dressing skills. The clothes in the shop front was the first thing I ever noticed about the place. It's always a really good job. So kudos to whoever sets this up. Inside the store it's always laid out brilliantly, some vintage shops are a bit like TK Maxx at the best of times, you need a good few hours to sort through the jumble until you find the gem you're after, but in Vintage they've got everything in order around the shop and you can immediately find some real gems. They sell (amongst a myriad of others) trousers, skirts, dresses, shoes, jackets, formal and casual wear. Anything and everything. Paradise! Even their furniture is for sale (so pretty too!) Like most vintage shops they don't offer refunds but do offer a credit note exchange. I find this particularly handy if you don't have the time to try items on. You're always going to find something you're after anyway.
