When we got to our room we saw there was a black moldy looking substance on the popcorn ceiling right over the bed, there was the faint smell of urine and mustiness and there was a spot on the bathroom door where someone obviously punched a hole in it. The look on my girlfriends face when we saw all this said in no uncertain terms we weren't staying in this place. I drove to the Clarion I recommend them highly) right up the road and made sure a room was available, then immediately went to the Red roof office and told them we were leaving and wanted a refund. They refused to refund me for the night, but did refund the rest of our stay. I found out later this is a well known NO TELL MOTEL, common for assignations of an adulterous nature. That was not our purpose and I resent them thinking it was! In effect they stole 71.00 from me since they promised a clean and useable room and FAILED MISERABLY to deliver. This place is lower than one star! I would rather sleep in an open field than stay here; ...at least the field doesn't have unknown black moldy looking crap likely to float down on you as you sleep! We were looking for a 'staycation' that felt like a getaway, and that's exactly what we got! For all we knew, it felt like we had traveled hundreds of miles to a vacation destination tucked away on our own exclusive resort! Their team was great and access to the room was totally contactless. They are pet-friendly and have a # of different style cabins with varying degrees of luxury & with our cabin rental, we received free kayak/canoe rentals and also received a discount to rent a pontoon boat, which we did and would do again! P.S. you do NOT need a license to drive the boat and all life jackets (except infant) are provided! You can bring food and alc/non-alc beverages on board for everyone to enjoy, except the driver, who can still enjoy a nice mocktail. The cabins were squeaky clean and have everything you need and more, most importantly: wi-fi, TV(s), heat, and A/C! Some cabins have their own deck, picnic table, and grill, but there are MULTIPLE community fire-pits and grills scattered elsewhere throughout. Even though we did not stay in a cabin right on the water, the second row was elevated high enough to still have a lake view! BIG BONUS POINTS if you have kids, as they have a HUGE lake-side sandbox like I've never seen before and an awesome playground! Hungry? Thirsty? No problem - take a few steps and you're at the connected Sunset Grill restaurant, which has a gorgeous view and observatory, live music on some nights, and my most-favorite feature, little dining cubbies for larger groups with your OWN, personal, controllable heat lamp and fan - absolutely brilliant. (No reservations unfortunately, but they were very accommodating as we tried to seat our larger group) We will definitely be going back! This charming campground looks to be mostly seasonal and long-term campers, we were the only ones…read morein a tent. Our spot was completely grass; we drove our truck onto it and had a HUGE space to set up camp. Our spot had an overgrown field about a hundred feet back, and a nice tree for shade. Other tent spots backed up to the woods, across the mowed field from us. The bathrooms here were very simple and clean. There was always toilet paper and soap, so it's being maintained. The showers are also nice but simple; to turn on you set a timer between 1-5. The water temperature is automatic but very comfortable. The owner went above and beyond to accommodate our 1am arrival; she called to check our status, left a map with a highlighted route and notes on how to get to our site, and even put an orange traffic cone next to the picnic table so we could see it in the dark! We are avid campers and adventurers, so this additional touch really made West Haven stand out. It was 10 minutes to get to town, and 20 to the tip of Presque Isle. There's a pool AND small fishing pond, paved roads throughout the campground and most sites are grassy, not gravel.

A terrific small motel that takes you right back to the 60's - and not in a bad way! The space for the beds was laid out in an L rather than side by side, with a tiny bathroom filling in the rest of the square. It was snug but not cramped, if that makes sense. There was a nice sized fridge - big enough to hold a full sized pizza box when we took out one shelf. The air conditioning was just fine - if it had been a cooler night, I'd have opened the windows because the room is set up for a good cross-breeze. The decor is solidly middle-20th century utilitarian (one small picture on a wall, polyester bedspreads) and the reading light over the bed needs some love to get it back to full functionality. The bed was a bit soft for our preference, but I slept fine. There was a bit of noise from the road, but surprisingly little considering the location. We had neighbors, but I didn't notice any noise. As mentioned, the bathroom in our room was very small, with a shower - plenty of hot water! This is not a plush towel establishment, but I was taken right back to childhood hotel experiences with the tiny bar of Dial they provided. Each room has a small table and chairs right outside the door, so we could have had take-out while enjoying the cool lake air. Unfortunately (IMO), each also had an ashtray, so if anyone in a neighboring room is a smoker, that might affect your enjoyment of the space. It was a good place to stay, for a good price - note that they don't take credit cards.
