So I call today to make an appointment and redeem a $29 groupon smog check, I am asked my car year and model (remember that). I am told that I can drop by and pay on site the very same amount of $29. Great ! I confirm twice that it is $29 and there is no additional fee (I have read stories about this kind of things happening). Perfect so I go. When I arrive a person tells me "it's $50 for this car" so I say NO and I get back into my car, then he says "$40", I left. This "business" claims ------ 1. "First and foremost: Customer Service!", 2. "Young entrepreneurs wanting to serve the Mountain View community" and 3. "Honest, friendly and very informative.". I was driving out for this anyway and found a plan B within minutes but imagine how many people fall into this trap, is this the kind of business we want in our community ? It's not only about the money, just tell me ahead what the REAL price is and it's up to me to decide, with no pressure, don't tell me $29 then $50 then $40 ..... this is not serious. Went to do a smog check, they had licenses and certificates on the wall. Had a Groupon, they charged $10 for SUV, Miguel connected the cable for smog check, told me no data coming out of the car, and find a repair shop to fix. Went to Toyota dealership, paid $270, they said the car is ok and data is coming out just fine. Went back to them, they said still no data and the problem was not fixed. My husband and I got our Priuses smog checked here with less than a 10 minute wait. Sonny did the smog check for us, and he was very friendly and fast. I called ahead to make sure it wasn't too crowded, and he told me exactly what time would be best to avoid waiting, but if I wanted to drop in now, he told me how many customers would be in front of me to set proper expectations. When we arrived at the time he advised, he was just finishing up with the last customer and we were next. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! VERY RUDE!! Before driving the 20 minutes I called to check if there was a wait I was told it was very slow. I arrived and the wait was an hour. Not a big deal as a lot can happen in 20 minutes. I was greeted with lack luster enthusiasm at best, okay maybe he was just having a bad day. Then I found our about the additional $8.25 I'm rolling with it. ( A heads up there are no magazines, no music, or air conditioning so bring a book if you decide to venture over in case there is a wait. I'm new to California and wasn't aware that an engine light on automatically means your car doesn't pass smog clearly had I known that I would've taken the car in to resolve this matter before going to use my coupon. When he returned to tell me my car had failed he found no other reason than the engine light. I was confused was to why he had tested my car knowing it would fail with the engine light out. When I inquired as to why he went ahead and ran the test knowing it would fail instead of checking with me to get the light addressed he was dismissive and told me he ran it to find out if there were other issues. I insisted if he knew it would fail it seemed reasonable, and good customer service to ask me to determine if I wanted him to to continue with the test giving me the option to first get the light looked at or continue and use my coupon knowing the car wouldn't pass, he deflected and seemed annoyed by the question. After filling out the paperwork, the tech looks at the form and says, oh hey, we can't do the smog check on your car. Why I ask. He says part of the smog checking machinery is broken so he can't check the rpms on cars older than '95. WTF. I say I specifically asked you whether it was ok to bring my '87 Toyota in and you said yes. The tech says, oh I forgot. I took time off and made a special trip to bring my second car in. My car had easily passed smog a few months ago so I thought it'd pass this time (I'm selling it so I'm smogging it again). But my car failed due to I/M not ready, which was probably because of a dead battery last week. I asked if I could drive it around and bring it back for a free retest. Surly guy told me they don't do free retests. This car is OBD-II which means they just eyeball it and check codes - no real work involved. Who doesn't give free retests these days?! Here's the email: "Yesterday I got my VW Beetle 5AKS021 smog checked at your place and ended paying $68.20 instead of $23.50 + $8.20. We've been smogging our two cars at your establishment at least since 2015. It is conveniently close, had friendly service and competitive rates up until yesterday. What happened actually sounds like a jeopardy game. I took the car in and talked to Miguel. I asked him what the testing would cost, mentioning that my wife had found the coupon. I had forgotten the exact amount in the coupon and asked him about it. He replied that I needed to Google it. I did do that on my iPhone but the only thing that came up for your place was the 20% discount. When I asked him if that was it, he was again unhelpful. I know you pay extra for the Evap test on older vehicles and for trucks but this is total BS. Beware of the "extra fees" if your car is year 2000 or older and paying with a Groupon voucher . My car got a smog test and passed but Knocking this place for wasting my time and money. When I get there, there are 3 cars ahead of me. Technician says my car is older model car and warns of extra fee because the car needs to be run on the dyno. I said fine thinking there's a small up charge. Then tells me I have to wait an hour because his dyno isn't ready and has to clear the air line. I should've left at this point but needed smog to get my registration and I already bought the Groupon. So I shopped around in the nearby center while my car sat and he continued to test other (newer) cars. Two and half hours later technician finally pulls my car into the service bay. Upon visual inspection of my car he realizes that I have aftermarket headers, intake, and exhaust and asks whether I had CARB paperwork for them. I furnish the paperwork and then he tells me I have an after market catalytic converter (um it's stock) and that I need paperwork for it. I explain that the catalytic converter is stock and if it were aftermarket it would have to pass smog anyway. He says he needs to jack up my car to inspect it. So another delay. Meanwhile more cars keeps pulling up and he's testing these cars by keeping my car on the dyno and pulling cars in front of mine to perform smog test. Meanwhile my car is running idle the entire time. After he finishes with the other cars (I've been at the smog station for 3 hrs), he never bothered to jack my car up to inspect the catalytic converter, and then he starts the upselling BS. First the technician tells me there's a smell of gasoline from my exhaust. I tell him I don't regularly check the smell of my exhaust when the car is running but perhaps it's because my car has been running idle for 30mins. Then The technician tried to charge me $60 more on top of the Groupon because my car was a 1996 year car with modifications and that it might not pass smog. I told him the $90 ($30 Groupon voucher + $60 up charge) was ridiculous and he shows me a sign showing their "regular" price for smog check at $90, telling me that no smog shop would ever smog my car for a $30 Groupon. I said this very shop did two years ago on this exact car with the same modifications and showed him the receipt from my previous visit. I even pointed out that the cars has barely 200miles more since the previous smog check since it wasn't getting driven during Covid. His jaw dropped and had to call his "partner". He comes back with a $31 counter offer. I told him I'm only agreeing since I have to get the smog done, I already purchased the Groupon, and I've wasted my entire afternoon waiting. Technician then spends the next 5mins revving my engine and wasting my gas to "warm up" the car so that it will pass smog saying that failure to do so would likely result in a failed test. I just told him to run the test and we'll see what the results are. Sure enough it passes. As previously stated, I've been to this station many times before and usually I'm in and out within 30mins.
