Anyways, enough of my meat nostalgia, Premier Meats is a small yet brilliant butchers tucked away up on Castle Street. They have all the usual cuts plus a whole section of marinated specials which always look delicious and are pretty well priced. The guys who work there are really pleasant and always are offering advice either to do with the preparation of the meat or a predicted football score. Quality stuff. Pros: Great service, good quality meats. Cons: A bit off the beaten track.

Go to, say ... Sainsbury's, one premium steak there £12? OK, At Orr's ... It's £2! The quality elsewhere won't be any better, not by a mile and you've just saved £10 at the local butcher. Handy! Go buy a bottle of nice wine or a bunch of flowers, whatever tickles your fancy. It's win, win, win! Orr's stock the best of the best. I would munch down on chicken olives if my life depended on it as long as they were from Orr's. Try their pork and leek sausages...I won't buy them from anywhere else! It's just a let down once you've tried them from here. Same goes for their chili sausages. The same probably goes for everything they sell. If I had the time and or money I'd have worked through it all by now. If I ever manage to do this I'll be sure to let you know. Though I'd maybe have died happy if I accomplished this. Stuck in the middle of a wide variety of old-looking shops is a fantastic little butchers, one which should (but never will) blow every supermarket and chain store out of the water. With every cut of meat you could possibly want, this place had a queue of about ten people waiting to get served. Anywhere else that would be deemed bad service and you would complain. However, a long queue in a butchers is a healthy thing because it shows that people trust it first and foremost, and don't mind paying over the odds for some great food. I would definitely recommend it, not solely because it sells some really top quality meat (especially the steaks) but because it is much better to support local produce rather than processed rubbish that gets shipped in from somewhere dark and dingy.

For the first time in Belfast I also found tinned foule medamme (broad beans). These were combined with garbanzo beans and flavourings, ready to eat food that could be described as a Middle Eastern equivalent to baked beans, in this case a product imported from Dubai. It's a small place without a large range of stock really. To be realistic the chances of its survival may be on the low side but as a shop it is another example that shows how much more varied and multi faceted Belfast has become in the last 10 years or so. Admittedly this shop caters for a very narrow clientele but it is of interest to food minded locals in addition to the ethnic community that it serves.

This little butcher/farm shop towards the front of the market sells everything from corn-fed chickens (producing that lovely yellow skin which crisps up very well when fried) to venison and beef. I left with half a dozen eggs the last time, slightly more pricey than Mc Carthy's egg stall across the way but they were still great. I ended up using them in a spinach and goats cheese soufflé, very tasty and I recommend it.

Located just opposite the fishmongers on the city-side of the market is this little foodie delight. They serve all manner of things on bread, rare-breed burgers and roast pork for example. Now while I'm sure I have sampled their food to go at some point I can't quite remember how it fared, so this time I tried their small but perfectly formed range of meats. I am a sucker for rich game. Pigeon and venison are possibly two of the greatest, iron-y, port rich densely textured meats on earth and if I'm given the possibility I will devour them. I noticed on offer were two small venison steaks, vacuum packed for freshness and convenience. To the best of my knowledge all the meats are sourced from the farm directly and are bred to the highest standards. The steaks of course weren't cheap. With meats like venison which can't truly be 'farmed' the cost is always going to be higher but the richness of the meat was superb. Very lean, rich iron on the nose and a touch of dark blood when removing them from the packet. I flash fried the steaks in a hot pan after marinading in juniper berries, sloe gin, a touch of garlic and fresh lemon thyme. Towards the end of the frying I threw in a chunk of butter and before basting them until it became a noisette. The staff were more than helpful and friendly when talking about the source of the meat and a bit of history about the shop. It's open on Sat and Sun generally at the market. Well worth the trip.

They also offer meat packs, such as a host of burgers, sausages, minced beef for £10 or a bit more for £20. With Tescos located further up the road, the tendency is for customers to go to a chain store for cheaper meat. But as with most butchers, the food is nicer, particularly the minced beef which is perfect for any cottage pies or lasagne. I would definitely recommend this butchers because despite the price of their food being that bit higher than supermarkets, their food is much nicer and it is better to support local businesses.

They are really cheap at 85p for one and make a fantastic lunch. Really happy this place is close to me.

As the previous review notes local butchers have been getting it tough the last decade so it's nice to see Crowes competing with the big boys, price and quality wise. One other bonus to a visit is that the lads working in the shop always are friendly and have a good bit of banter ready for you, be it sport, weather or women related. I was on a search - a search for a particular ingredient not often looked for or stocked in this little island, bone marrow. I'd recently bough Fergus Henderson's marvellously sharp and interesting book, Nose to Tail Eating.Fergus in his restaurant, St.John in London (now awarded two mitchelin stars) focuses on modern old school British cooking, utilising every part of the animal, with notable focus on offal. One dish that caught my eye was their legendary roast bone marrow and parsley salad. But alas, where to get some cow bone. I tried a few small places in the city centre with no luck until I called in. I asked and he came back with two huge chunks of beef shin bone. Superb, less subtle and dainty than the pictures I'd seen but none the less... bones and, free of charge!

You can't have a midday snack without wine, right? Much/most of the food here is quite local (the wine is Spanish) and the staff are helpful. Check the "sandwich board" out front for specials. A great…read moreselection of various packaged food, a deli that makes fresh sandwiches, pastries, fresh cheeses to cut and an olive bar. Browsing the store, I saw that it's separated into sections. An Italian section with lots of varieties of pastas and sauces. Cookies from Italy and limoncello! There is a very small Mexican section, which in my opinion was pretty darn good for being in Ireland! They had tortillas, various dry chilies and hot sauces. Lots of cookies, candies, jams and jelly's and a very large tea selection. The cheese case and deli were loaded with so many choices, it was hard to choose! You can order food and eat at tables that are just outside the front of the store. A definite recommend but if you're a foodie, be prepared to be dazzled!
