Very dynamic techniques and drills, perfect for self defense or competition. He trains and coaches jujitsu competitors, MMA fighters, women's self defense, and offers one on one personal training. I'm a 3 month white belt. Here's my take:…read more Ohio BJJ & Self Defense Academy is an amazing place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, wrestling, boxing and MMA. It is a Pedro Sauer affiliate, with several of the instructors students of Master Sauer himself. Under the leadership of Tony Rinaldi, students are taught extremely technical, fundamental concepts of BJJ, with a focus on technique. There are 9 other black belt instructors who either teach or assist with classes, so everyone gets careful instruction and attention to ensure that lessons, drills and rolling (sparring) is done properly and safely. Ohio BJJ offers classes 7 days a week, and several classes each day to fit any schedule. Each class has a large number of students, which offers a variety of ages, skill levels, body types and both male and female students to give a lot of experience against different partners. The gym members themselves are all laid back and helpful. This isn't your 'tough guy' type of gym, it feels like more of a club atmosphere. New members are quickly welcomed and made to feel a part of the team. There are no real formalities, uniform requirements, or strict rules to memorize, just straight up pure BJJ. Oh, and forget about testing fees, and required advancement ceremonies. When you've proven yourself and earned a stripe or new belt, it is awarded to you by the instructor on the spot. Advancement is not just given after a period of time either. Every stripe is merit based, and when it is placed on your belt you know that you've proven yourself. I have been coming all the way out to this location for many, many, MANY years; my parents' local…read morefolk dance group has a tradition of reserving the grounds, spending the weekend in the cabins and using the enormous, hollowed out barn for dancing. And there's a lot to talk about when it comes to this location, with its beautiful rolling hills and rustic facilities, which are growing more and more popular as people find out it exists and that they can rent it for various lengths of time. Here's my thoughts on the various aspects of this location and property: -The general location: This place is located in beautiful Pennsylvania countryside; absolutely a lovely place to spend a weekend! -The barn: The barn is probably the main reason the local folk dance group keeps coming on out; it's been "hollowed" so that there's no stalls or anything inside, providing lots of space for tables - which we set for dinner - as well as for dancing in a very large group. A fridge, sink and "bar" area are in the corner for people to use, too. -The cabins: The cabins - I believe there's around 50, maybe more of them on the grounds - are about as good as you can expect. They're wooden with linoleum floors - i.e. COLD. The showers aren't amazing but are functional, and the beds...not the most comfy thing ever, not going to lie. If you have a bad back, I'm sorry: the beds are not going to help it. If you have kids and you rent a cabin ask about the ones with bunk beds. -The lake: There's a beautiful lake here that is worth strolling alongside when the sun is out; in recent years management has even added a little plaza, presumably because more and more weddings are being booked here. It's a beautiful place to just sit and relax. -The playground: There is indeed a playground, although I remember it before the equipment was all replaced with plastic. I'm sure kids'll love it; I personally miss the old set-up, although I love that the basketball and volleyball court are still there. -The main building: Finally, there's a main building which I have not been in for a long time - the folk dance group just reserves the barn now - but I remember being a pretty cool place to hang out. There used to be a pool room and a swimming pool up there as well, but I don't know if they're still there. Definitely a nice place to look into for indoor/outdoor events, although since this is Pennsylvania countryside sometimes the weather just will not cooperate with your plans - it happens. The cabins aren't phenomenal but this place does have a nice rustic feel to it, so if you think that's what you want, check it out and book something quickly - it's amazing just how popular this spot in the middle of nowhere is becoming!
