I've done proper maintenance as prescribed by Toyota and put new brakes and tires on it throughout the years as needed...Once. The car was also stored in my garage for almost 3 years while I was on assignment in NYC. She's been running fine but a little rough from time to time and the brakes were definitely ready for change 2. I took her to Gene at Talon and explained what I wanted to do; basically give her a 150000 mile check up. He dealt with me honestly, fairly and right up front with his assessment of her ''health.'' I got an immediate appointment, a very fair price and a reassurance that this is indeed a great car in very good condition that I'd be safe to drive cross-country if I wanted to! That's all I need. We were surprised because normally we would wait a couple days or more for someone to show up. He did an awesome job diagnosing the problem, went and got the parts and had everything working in a very short period of time. He gave me an in-person quote of $200, which I confirmed twice, but the final bill came to $398. Suddenly, there were insurance fees I was never told about. This felt like a classic bait-and-switch. Pricing transparency is completely lacking--get everything in writing. The job may be fine, but the way they handle cost is unacceptable.

Thinking it was a transmission problem and fearing a new transmission cost, I took it a nationally advertised transmission company. It was 4:30 on a Friday afternoon, the ad stated open till 5:30pm. When I arrived, it was closed tighter than a drum. Another car service center in that same shopping center was kind enough to take a look at it, even though it was closing time. They diagnosed the problem, but were not open on the weekend and recommended Tom Joyce Auto Repair Shop, said that shop was open on Saturday even called and left msg on answering machine. I took the car at 0745 for the opening time of 0800. The one and only mechanic said he had lots of work already scheduled and closed at 1230 on Saturday, but he would try to take a look. I told him my situation, and that I needed to be back to work on Monday, he said he do what he could, I left the car. I feared the worst! He called me back at almost five o clock, told me that it was just a universal joint, which he replaced for what I considered a very reasonable price. I'm sorry I don't remember his name, but this man went well above and beyond his duty to service me and well past closing time, and I would recommend this repair shop to anyone!
