Sometimes a girl gets a hankering for a massive bowl of pasta. Specifically, slathered in seafood and rich tomato sauce. This happened on a holiday in Auckland and after a quick bit of research I was on my way to Prego. Hooray! The marinara linguini was excellent - super fresh and an abundance of fishy things. I added extra chilli because, hey, I'm a heat feind. Prior to eating this giant bowl of carbs I devoured the vitello tonnato which was rather impressive too. With knowledgable service and a great wine list, I'd be happy to have Prego as my local Italian.

Prego has been around for over 25 years and it remains just as busy as the day it opened! Why? Well, consistency. You know exactly what you're going to get at Prego. For starters, the staff are really well trained. They know the menu and wine list inside out and despite their manic lunch & dinner rushes always seem to deliver a really high level of service. The same can be said of the food - it's always on the money and is delivered within a reasonable timeframe. It's for these reasons that Prego is a favourite for businesses lunches and dinners. The only downfall, you can't book. Personally, my favourite time to go is at 3pm on a Friday when things have quietened down a bit. They stay on a full menu right through out the day and it's way more chilled. We often come here for girls long lunches, share a couple of pizzas and their calamari w rocket and aioli. Mention must also be made of their vitello tonnato - thin slices of veal and seared tuna with crispy fried capers and a mayonnaise type sauce. It's seriously good!

Service: 4/5 Food: 3/5 Price: 3/5 a little too expensive for its value. Environment: 3/5 This place was so noisy. Maybe it is on a Sat night. If you want to have some decent group conversation, this is not a place for you. We had to shout out the whole night, even with the person next to you. Food, ok. Not that special. My pizza was salty and the linguine needed some salt. But I have to say, the service was good. Staff were very friendly.

Ah Prego. How you endure. Still a place to see and be seen, still with some of the worst acoustics around. Still, we go. Because it's fun and the food is always good and the people always worth a look (and a listen - those tables are close together). I love the salads and usually have the Fettucine Alfredo without the ham. I appreciate it when chefs don't get all arsey about leaving something out - it's not like I'm ADDING something in that they "forgot" right? I have so many memories from here; work do's, girlfriend catch-ups and I even had a very shortlived "thing" with a travelling barman in a previous life. Oh God. And that's what's great about Prego. It's a backdrop to so many an Auckland tale suffused in garlicky Italian goodness and sozzled in the grape of the day. Just be careful on the way to and from the toilets.

Prego, Prego, Prego. A Ponsonby institution. In my mind the best, and cheapest, item on the menu is the freshly baked house loaf, served with creamy butter and a saucer of balsamic and olive oil for dipping. It's piping hot, crumbly yet so soft on the inside and the perfect beginning to a delicious Italian meal. A must-order! The seafood linguini is also excellent, as is the calamari, the tuna starter and the whole baked snapper. You can't go wrong with the risotto either. Good service and consistently excellent food, makes Prego a restaurant not to be missed.

Prego is always a winner. Brilliant service, food and drinks, whenever we're looking for a new place to go, we always just end up going back to Prego because it's guaranteed to be an awesome time. My favourite is the Surf & Turf, but I ask for roast potatoes instead of polenta because I find it a little to hard to stomach. And I also have a little, well actually a huge soft spot for their Espresso Martinis. Ah-mazing. They accommodate for kids really well by handing out colouring in pages and crayons. It means they're kept busy while you can enjoy a peaceful meal. Prego epitomises Ponsonby food and I always come away stoked on the whole experience.

Fish of the day risotto...holy deliciousness!

I have been here twice now and from those two experiences I know that this will always be the restaurant I choose when I am wanting somewhere luxurious to go for dinner. It truly feels like a celebration when I eat here, the food is just incredible. The décor is light and inviting during the day, with plenty of outdoor seating, then at night things change. It morphs into somewhere magical and romantic, proving the versatility of this restaurant. Both times I have been, I have ordered the same dish, just because it was so so good I can't bear not to have it. Once I had the calamari as a starter and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it! I also noticed they offer some lighter tapas style dishes which I thought would be good to enjoy with my boyfriend over a glass of wine or beer. The service is great, really attentive and informative, if you can get them to read out the days specials it's a must as they do it so well!

This Italian has been around for donkey's on Ponsonby Road. Prego has had a recent makeover, it's still a minimalist space but with some acoustic and furniture upgrades its better. Most of the classic dishes are still on offer, pizza, fillet of fish on herbed risotto, iconic pastas however not the best I have had - my friends lasagne was just swimming in tomato and cheese. My Seafood Marinara was full of lovely perfectly cooked seafood but not a lot of liquid, sauce or anything to coat the spaghetti. I thought Marinara was a tomato base sauce. So I was cracking on the pepper and wishing for more parmesan. The service was ok although the waitress quite grumpy. Pity I couldn't fit dessert as I had eyed up a few things. Prego's must be doing something right though as they are always busy and I think they will continue to be. It was a cool space to share in celebrating my friends birthday.

Most enjoyable restaurant meal for some time! Excellent staff; Filet steak and snapper on a risotto were absolutely perfect.

We started with gorgeous green-lipped mussels, then had the linguini with prawns and duck risotto.

This place is famous for good Italian food, but more so for its 1 metre long pizzas. We have had…read morethem for loads of work functions and they always go down a treat. And they aren't too badly priced either, I guess you're bulk buying really! But they aren't the kind of gross, New York style pizzas, some how you feel healthy when eating them. This is probably down to the ingredients, they're fresh, gourmet and traditionally Italian. My favourite is the Pollo it has roast chicken, caponata, eggplant, zucchini, capsicum, red onions, celery, tomato, olives, capers, mozzarella. Wow. I've also dined in the restaurant a few times and it's always so good. I love their potato crochets, it's like biting into a little morsel of goodness. I would definitely recommend Toto if you're looking for a bit or a gourmet night in by the telly, or a fancy evening out.

Dare I say, I've finally found my new favourite pizza again?…read more Ever since Non-Solo Pizza switched chefs (at least for their pizza) a couple of years ago, I've been having a hard time finding that perfect pizza place to fully satisfy my cravings. Through random luck I found Toto online while searching for food deliveries, and decided to come try it out myself. Due to my total lack of directions, I had a bit of trouble finding them on a rainy quiet Friday afternoon. I gave them a call, and their friendly staff came out of the store in the rain to wave at me so I could find them :) Ordered the 1/2 metre Pugliese, which is my all time favourite, and they definitely did not disappoint. The olives, the anchovies, the cheese, everything was great, with just the right proportion of everything. Will definitely try to gather a bunch of friends and try out the full metre next!

Speaking to the owner of the Parnell Store he tells me about his passion & desire to be his own boss and working with Pizza. Until recently Sal's Pizza was a family operation and not up for franchise. This has now slowly changed with the sale of Parnell & more recently the opening of their new store in Hamilton. I am told about how all their ingredients are shipped from New York and nothing is left to chance here, and If I do not like their pizza he will refund my money back every penny (at this point I thought about whether correcting him & telling him we don't do penny's here) but I thought better off since he will be cooking me a fresh pizza.. I've seen what happens on Gordon's Ramsay - Kitchen Nightmares when you talk back to the chef ;-). But I hardly doubt he would ever do something like I have seen on TV. I am presented with the menu in front of me of large 18″ Pizza's or by the slice.. with a cabinet of other foods to go with it, Garlic Knots, Pepperoni Pinwheels, buffalo wings & mozzarella sticks all of which look delicious! since I'm with a group of friends we decide to go for a large half pepperoni half italian meatball with a pitcher of beer to help wash it down, with a size of mozzarella sticks & buffalo wings. The wings & the mozzarella came out first followed by the beer. One thing I have noticed about this place is the decor - styled in New Yorker theme red brick & big screen tv's with NBA Live on ESPN. A good choice to come here during lunch I reckon. They really understand their customers needs. Pizza + Beer + Sport = WIN The pizza came out not long after we finished out wings & mozzarella, we were amazed at the size of this thing.. I am told they do eating competitions for the quickest person to finish a whole 18″ pizza, I am told a good time somewhere in the 30min mark. But I don't see how I could possibly do that - even after 5 mins the pizza is still incredibly hot to bite into. As you see from the photo, this pizza is awesome! taste wise - on a totally a different level than what you find with the likes of Hells & Domino's. I wouldn't even put them in the same league as them. This enjoyment does come with a price 4 times as much as a large Pizza from any other place out there. Is it worth it?? - I think so! The atmosphere as I mentioned before is styled for guys - who love their pizza with their beer while watching sports. Perhaps one night a week they should have lazy boys around the store pointed towards the big screen & charge people $40 for entry which grants them pizza & beer while watching the game.. could be a nice little earner for them. From the 18″ Pizza with three guys we managed to finish off most of the Pizza, I say most as I've left the crusts behind.. but I'm told I would be disqualified if I was in the competition as you have to eat the entire pizza, crusts & all. wow.. After all that I don't think I could move an inch & would gladly sit back for the next hour & watch the sport while the food settles down.. but alas I must get back to work. I now leave you with the following thoughts; Food 4/5 - Best Pizza out - although the sight of seeing oil dripping off, is a tad bit off-putting. Service 5/5 - Friendly & courtious Price - 3/5 $24 for an 18″ Pizza or $9 for 2 Slices.. Atmosphere -5/5 - Where are my lazy boy's?! Like i said before Pizza + Beer + Sports = WIN Overall 4.5/5 - I'm calling it.. Best Pizza Place out.. Hamilton.. prepare to be blown away.. You no longer will have to put up with average pizza from other places.. But with anything this will cost you in the end.
