After a long day of walking around, my legs and feet felt like spaghetti. That's why it's nice to take a break throughout the day and relax a little bit. That's exactly what I did at Jardim de Estrela. This is a large park with plenty of trails, vegetation, and benches. I took advantage of the beauty and meditated here. Beyond the sights, there are several statues throughout the park to check out and learn some history. There are also a bunch of ducks and geese that hang out by the lake. The geese are huge! I'm not sure what they feed them in Portugal but we're talking mutant geese. If you're willing to hang out with mutant geese, this is a relaxing spot to spend some time at.

The employee is one of those few Portuguese that plays dumb as soon as they hear a word of English. My husband is American, I'm Portuguese. She heard us speak in English and was surprised when I addressed her in Portuguese with our order. She proceeds to tell me she doesn't understand what a 'garoto' is because she doesn't know 'American words'. When I asked her to confirm she didn't know what a garoto was she had the decency of looking embarrassed and promptly 'remembered' what it was. Next I ordered a 'torrada com manteiga' and she served us a thin slide of whole wheat bread sprinkled with oreganos (you can't make this stuff up). I had her redo it minus the herbs and she still argued she always makes it that way. I mean if you want to deal with the village idiot in a decrepit park this is the place to visit.

I really enjoyed this zoo because of the intimate nature of the exhibitions. In many cases you…read morereally feel close to the animals when you observe them. In terms of the variety of animals and the relative ease of accessing them this place gets 5 stars for sure. In terms of the size of the place - it's not big by any respect. I was able to blast through everything in about 2-3 hours and we didn't exactly zip through either. We took time to view, read and take photos as we went. The main issue is this place isn't cheap and it's pretty pricey for something that won't take up a lot of your day. But in the end I just saw it as contributing money to the zoo and hoping it helps keep the animals taken care of. If you look at it that way, relative to what the zoo offers, I think it was worth it for me.

With it being so small I thought the price tag at $30 euros per person was a little much. It only took us about two 1/2 hours to see the entire zoo and watch the bird show. The bird show was in Portuguese so we couldn't understand what birds were what, but nonetheless, the show was very nice and entertaining. They had a great primate exhibit and the animals seem to be a little closer than most zoos I have been to.
