I retained The Wilson Firm to assist with an IRS tax matter involving a prior-year amended return…read moreand refund claim. Over the course of the engagement, I paid over $10,000 in legal fees and costs. The firm did perform work on the matter, including communications with the IRS, legal research, and preparation of an appeal. My dissatisfaction is not that no work was performed. Rather, after reviewing the invoices in detail, I was disappointed by the overall value received relative to the fees paid. A significant portion of the billing consisted of internal conferences, firm meetings, administrative tasks, scanning and filing activities, and similar internal work. Based on my review of the invoices, I estimate that roughly one-third of the total billed amount fell into those categories. Ultimately, after spending more than $10,000, I chose not to continue pursuing the matter because I no longer believed the expected benefit justified the additional cost. While I understand the engagement agreement permitted many of the billed charges, prospective clients should carefully review the firm's billing practices, staffing approach, and fee structure before engaging them. What ultimately left the most negative impression was the firm's handling of a disputed final balance of approximately $280. After I requested and reviewed the billing records, I expressed concerns regarding the overall value of the representation. Rather than a constructive discussion, the response became unnecessarily confrontational and dismissive. I paid the final balance to close the matter, but based on my experience, I would not retain the firm again and would encourage prospective clients to closely monitor invoices and have very clear expectations regarding total costs and billing practices from the beginning

The $7,500 retainer I paid was completely drained within a month, with almost nothing accomplished -- we were in court for a total of two hours. When I questioned the fees, she blamed excessive communication, but the emails were the same unanswered questions sent over and over because I could never get a straight answer. I was also billed for discovery that was never filed. She promised me on a Friday call that my case would be her first priority Monday morning. Instead, I got an invoice for even more money and then total silence -- nothing further was done on my case. I had to hire new counsel just to keep things moving, paying again for discovery and other work, and dealing with delays because the firm was slow to release my file. If you find yourself in an urgent family matter, do not waste your time or money here. You will receive false promises and zero results. This office is not there to help your case, only to collect your money.
