Originally, the course had eight holes (don't ask why), ten more were added when in the nineties as the Berliner Golf Club Gatow was founded as the sucessor of the original British Golf Club. So you start out on the old course, after the second hole you go out on the new part, returning to the old one with the 13th hole. The old part is really a beautiful parkland course, with the holes being rather short. The course totals 'only' 5.817 meters, but still is challenging to play. Highlight of the new part are holes 6 through 8. These are situated in a big depression that formerly held Berlins emergency reserve of coal during the cold war (things you learn whilst playing with the locals). In the middle of the depression is the big "swan lake", the holes group themselves around it. Fairways and greens we're immaculate and it really was a joy to play there. I was on a solid round with consecutive bogeys and double bogeys through hole 12, after that I started to top almost all balls and couldn't get rid of it. I totally lost it on the final two holes, as I wasn't able to get the ball in the air, playing 14 on the par 5 17th and a 10 on the par 4 18th. I still cannot explain what happened there, let me blame that on the extensive beer consumption the night before that somehow affected my stamina. If Gatow wasn't so far away from my home I'd sure play there more often. Very nice atmosphere, beautiful landscape and a very cultivated course really make it very enjoyable to play there. Make sure to book your tee time in advance, you can either call in or book it online on the clubs website. On weekdays, greenfee is EUR 45 for 18 holes, EUR 60 on weekends.

My…read morewife and I played the - very narrow - nine hole course very often and after my handicap got below 45, I played the 18 hole course more often. The signature hole of the course is the par 3 second hole. The fairway is just a narrow path between two water hazards, you are limited to the right side and behind the green by the out-of-bounds-line. Plan was to use a 6 iron to place the ball to the left side of the green, but then it bounced from the fairway into the water hazard, so I walked off the green with a six. The following holes play pretty easy, no big hazards and you can get into the groove after the thrilling start. You surely have to have a good length off the tee and on the fairway, the par 4 fifth and eight are pretty long. The eigth is the hardest hole of the course, not only being long but the green is very demanding. Playing this baby bogey was the highlight of the day. The back nine starts with a par five dogleg, relatively easy to play. My third shot went into the water hazard right to the green and instead of taking a penalty and playing it from the greensiode rough I tried to play it out of the water hazard and ended up with an eight. So I gave away a probable bogey there. The 11th is the hardest par 3 of the course, you play from an elevated green over a water hazard onto a sloped green. My tee shot made the upper part of the green but had too much roll and ended in the bunker behind the green. But I was happy with it as it was my best tee shot at that hole yet. GC Kallin is really a nice and friendly club, the clubhouse terrace is a relaxing hangout after a nice round with a beautiful scenery over the 9th and 18th green. The pro staff at the golf school is also recommendable (I take lessons with one of their pros, Tim Raisner) the range offers good practice facilities and the greenfees are modest (30 EUR on weekday, 45 EUR on weekends and a special sundown tarrif (starting at 17.00) for 20 EUR.

A separate hut has been added to the range featuring a scope system. The 27 hole course can be played in three sections A, B and C. A and B are the former 18 hole course and feature more trees and bush vegetation whilst the C-course is more open land. The course play relatively long and almost every holes gives the player an individual challenge, as doglegs, trees and water hazards forces one to play tactically. Almost every hole features a water hazard of some kind. The 10th for example features one creek and two lakes and yes, I sacrificed a ball to the golf gods in both lakes. The par 4 14th offers a double fairway, separated by a creek in the middle. So you have the choice to go 180m carry to the right fairway or go straight 200m onto the left fairway that will leave you with some 130m onto the green across the creek. One of the biggest challenges is left on 18, a relatively short par 4 with 337 meters from the whites, but with an island green in front of the clubhouse. I hammered my five iron down the fairway and left me some 140m to the green. Sadly, my 6 iron came 5m short and gave the clubhouse terrace something to cheer as my ball plunged into the water. But score isn't everything. The course in my opinion is one of the nicest in the Berlin/Brandenburg area. The only problem is that is it relatively far away, under normal conditions it takes me 90 minutes to get me there. That's more than it takes me to get to Fleesensee, despite of it being further away. Green fee is 30 EUR on weekday and 50 EUR on weekends.

Danish PGA Pro Flemming Maas currently overlooks a driving range and practice facilities and a nine hole course (Par 74, Slope 125, CR 70,7). As of August, the second nine holes will be opened, the third nine will complete the course in spring 2009. The terrain offers no altitude changes, so the course is basically flat out, some elevated tee boxes give a little overview. Most fairways don't have proper contours yet, fairways and greens need their time to grow in. Things do get interesting, when water comes into play. Several creeks and ponds split fairways and protect greens. The holes are not particularly long, longest par 4 is 341 from yellow, so greens in regulation are an opportunity for the advanced golfer. I particularly liked the sixth hole, a slight dogleg right par 4 with the creek halving the fairway and a big pond protecting the second half of the fairway and the green from the right side. The course didn't have fairway markers and no birdiebook was available. So I had to play the course just guessing the lengths and properly judging my club selection. It worked out pretty well and felt more close to the origins of the game. My nine holes came at the cost of EUR 12,00 (on weekdays), a very fair price for the nine holes. Give the course one or two years to grow in and it'll become an interesting but fair course to play. I don't know how the second nine holes will look like, but I'll doubt that it will make the course a true championship course. So it will rather be your destination for a casual round with friends or family. The clubhouse and driving range reflect Flemming Maas danish descent, being wooden houses painted in red and white. Very cosy and inviting for your after-round beer.

Even the waiters in the restaurant try their best to be hospitable.... The kitchen however is an unmitigated mess! Eg. a Burger expressly ordered without tomatoes or tomato sauce gets drenched in tomatosauce and mayonnaise... Aparrently the cook "was not there" according to the waiters... Neiter in body or soul, it seems. Perhaps Wall would be better off without this cook altogether?
